Inspector Laravel Laravel Package

inspector-apm/inspector-laravel

Inspector is a real-time APM tool for Laravel. This package integrates your app to monitor errors, slow requests, SQL queries, background jobs, and performance bottlenecks with minimal setup, helping you diagnose issues and improve production performance.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Roadmap alignment with the Laravel AI ecosystem. Release 5.0.0 adds support for the Laravel AI SDK. If AI-assisted features (summarization, semantic search, classification, chat-style assistance, retrieval over your own content) appear anywhere on your roadmap, this package is now a candidate implementation path rather than a greenfield build. That is a roadmap sequencing input, not a mandate.
  • Build vs. buy. The decision this informs is narrow and concrete: do we build our own integration layer against the Laravel AI SDK, or adopt a maintained package that already wraps it? A package shipping SDK support in a major release is evidence the maintainer intends to stay current with the upstream SDK's interface. That lowers the "will this rot in six months" risk relative to a one-off internal wrapper, but does not eliminate it — a 5.0.0 tied to a young SDK is itself evidence that the interface is still moving.
  • Consolidation of AI plumbing into a shared dependency. For multi-product Laravel estates, a single vetted package beats N team-specific integrations. This release is the moment to evaluate that consolidation, because the major version is the natural migration boundary — you either standardize now or you standardize after each team has adopted a different wrapper.
  • Upgrade planning as a product decision, not just a technical one. A major version bump means the integration surface changed. Treat "stay on 4.x vs. move to 5.x" as a dated decision with an owner, because the cost of moving rises with every feature built on the old surface.
  • What this does not decide. It does not tell you whether the package's core feature set fits your use case, whether its license and support model are acceptable, or whether it performs under your data volumes. Those still require the evaluation in the next section.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when most of the following hold:

  • You are on a supported Laravel version and are prepared to adopt the Laravel AI SDK alongside it, or already have.
  • The package's core functionality maps to a capability you would otherwise build — and you can name the specific capability and the user-facing outcome it serves.
  • You have an owner who will track upstream releases. The 5.0.0 → SDK coupling means the package's release cadence is now partly dictated by someone else's cadence.
  • You can pin the version and absorb a major upgrade on a planned cycle rather than under incident pressure.
  • You have read the 5.0.0 changelog and migration notes in full. This assessment is based on a one-line release note; the breaking-change surface is unverified.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need a vendor-neutral or multi-framework integration. The value here is Laravel-native ergonomics; that is also the lock-in.
  • You are on an unsupported Laravel or PHP version, or cannot adopt the AI SDK for contractual, data-residency, or procurement reasons — adding a dependency that presumes it makes that constraint harder, not easier.
  • The only reason you are evaluating it is the AI SDK line. Adopting a package for one integration point, when the package does much more, imports maintenance surface you did not ask for. A thin in-house adapter may be cheaper.
  • You cannot tolerate a major version every time the upstream SDK shifts. Pin, or build the adapter yourself, or wait for a minor-release stabilization.
  • No one on the team has reviewed the diff between 4.x and 5.0.0. "Major version" plus "one-line release note" is not sufficient diligence for a production dependency.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives. A dependency we are evaluating shipped a new major version that integrates with Laravel's official AI SDK. Practically: it keeps our option open to add AI-backed features without a bespoke integration for each one, and it reduces the chance we build glue code that we then have to maintain indefinitely. The cost is a planned upgrade and a named owner. The recommendation is not "adopt" — it is "evaluate against our top two candidate use cases before we commit," because the release note is a single line and the breaking changes are not yet characterized.

For engineering. Version 5.0.0 adds Laravel AI SDK support. Treat this as a breaking release until proven otherwise: review the changelog and diff, confirm PHP/Laravel version constraints, and check whether the SDK integration is optional or a hard dependency of the package's core paths. Pin to 4.x on anything production-critical until a spike on 5.x confirms behavior under our real workloads. Report back on: upgrade effort, what the SDK coupling means for our version-upgrade cadence, and whether the AI SDK is now a transitive dependency we must handle in procurement and data-flow review.

For the product decision record. Decision: evaluate, do not yet adopt. Owner: [TBD]. Success criterion: a timeboxed spike against two named use cases, with an upgrade-effort estimate and a dependency-chain review, returning a build-vs-buy recommendation with a date attached.
