Time Continuum Laravel Package

innmind/time-continuum

InnMind Time Continuum is a PHP library for modeling time as a continuum of instants and intervals. It offers immutable temporal objects, precise duration arithmetic, comparisons, and conversions for scheduling and time-based domain logic.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Timezone and DST correctness as a product quality bar. Scheduling, bookings, reminders, subscription renewals, SLA timers, billing cycles, and reporting windows all fail in the same way when time is modeled implicitly. This package forces explicit timezone and explicit clock handling, which is the design property that prevents those defects.
  • Domain modeling: introduce a time vocabulary instead of scattering Carbon::now(). The library exposes immutable value objects (instants, durations, intervals, timezones, calendars). The PM decision it informs is whether the product gets a single, named time abstraction with an injected clock, or continues to let each feature call the framework's global now.
  • Roadmap items this unlocks or de-risks: multi-region/global launch, calendar-aware features (business days, holidays, cutoffs), recurrence rules, period-over-period analytics, proration and invoicing, availability calendars, time-boxed promotions, and any "closes at end of day in the customer's timezone" requirement.
  • Build vs. buy vs. fork. This is not a buy decision in the normal sense — the repository is archived, has 0 dependents, and 28 stars. The realistic options it informs are: (a) stay on Carbon/Chronos, (b) build a thin internal time abstraction and borrow this library's API shape, or (c) vendor/fork it behind an interface. Choosing between those is the product decision.
  • Deterministic testing and time simulation. An injectable clock makes "what does the user see on the day the trial expires" testable and demoable. That supports decisions about QA strategy, demo environments, and date-triggered feature flags.
  • Interoperability boundary decisions. Laravel ships Carbon and Eloquent casts to it by default. Adopting a non-Carbon time model means committing to conversion at the persistence, serialization, and view layers. The PM decision is whether that boundary cost buys enough correctness to justify it.
  • Support-cost and incident prevention. Most timezone bugs surface as customer-facing support tickets and manual credits. A stricter time model is a lever on support load and billing disputes, not just a code-style preference.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already in the Innmind ecosystem, or your team writes strict, immutable, functional-leaning PHP and the API style is a fit rather than a tax.
  • The time logic is a bounded context you can isolate behind your own interface, so the dependency never leaks into controllers, models, or Blade templates.
  • You have a small, senior team willing to vendor or fork the code and own it — treat it as source you are adopting, not a dependency you are consuming.
  • You want a design reference: reading its model of instants, durations, intervals, and explicit clocks is a cheap way to specify your own internal time abstraction before you build it.
  • The work is a prototype, spike, internal tool, or research task, where abandonment risk costs nothing.
  • You are explicitly evaluating time libraries and want a non-Carbon data point in the comparison.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are building a production Laravel application. There is no service provider, no facade, no Eloquent cast, no validation rule, no Blade helper. Every integration point is work you write and maintain.
  • You need active maintenance, security response, or an LTS commitment. The repository is archived, has no dependents, and a negligible community — there is no one to escalate to.
  • Your team depends on documentation, tutorials, and Stack Overflow answers to be productive. Onboarding cost here is real and permanent.
  • You have audit, financial, or regulatory requirements where an abandoned dependency is a finding in a procurement or security review.
  • You need broad parsing (many ISO 8601 profiles, RFC formats, natural-language input, locale-aware formatting). Carbon, Chronos, or brick/date-time are materially stronger.
  • Multiple teams will touch the code. Idiosyncratic APIs multiply review friction.
  • You expect to interoperate heavily with Eloquent, queues, and third-party SDKs that all speak Carbon or DateTimeInterface.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): This is a small, MIT-licensed PHP library for handling dates and times correctly across timezones. It is well-designed but effectively abandoned — archived, no downstream users, and a negligible community — so we should not put it on the critical path of any revenue or compliance-sensitive feature. The value to us is conceptual: it shows the shape of a correct time model, which we can borrow for a small internal abstraction while keeping Carbon, the library Laravel already ships and supports, as our runtime foundation. Cost to evaluate is a few engineering days; cost of a production dependency on an archived package is an unowned component in our stack. Recommendation: no-go for production adoption; conditional go for a short evaluation spike.

For engineering leads: The library's merits are real — immutable time values, explicit timezone, and an injected clock that makes time-dependent behavior testable. Those are the properties we actually want. The costs are also real: no Laravel integration, no Eloquent casts, no community, no maintenance, and an API that is idiomatic to one author's ecosystem rather than to ours. If we want the benefits, the cheapest path is a thin internal interface (Clock, Instant, Duration, Interval) with adapters to Carbon at the persistence and view boundaries, informed by this package's design. If we do adopt the package itself, it must be vendored, pinned, isolated behind that interface, and covered by our own tests — never referenced directly from application code.

Ask: Approve a short, time-boxed spike to specify the internal time abstraction. Do not approve this package as a runtime dependency.
