Object Graph Laravel Package

innmind/object-graph

A lightweight PHP library for modeling objects and their relationships as a graph. Build nodes and edges, traverse connections, and inspect object graphs through a small API suited to domain models, dependency analysis, and debugging tools.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • innmind/object-graph is a framework-agnostic introspection utility that walks a root object and produces a graph of nodes/edges. It is a developer-tooling and diagnostics dependency, not application infrastructure.
  • It occupies a niche adjacent to Laravel's existing serialization stack (toArray, JsonResource, Model::relations). Its differentiator is graph semantics — identity, shared references, and cycles — which tree/array flattening loses by design.
  • Best architectural fit: bounded, offline or batch tasks such as graph export for documentation, cycle detection in domain models, audit snapshots, test fixtures, and CLI/Artisan diagnostics. Poor fit for request-path serialization, API responses, or Eloquent persistence.

Integration feasibility

  • Composer-installable, PSR-4, MIT-licensed, PHP 8.x. Language-level integration is trivial; no Laravel service provider, config, or facade ships with it, so adoption requires a thin internal adapter if used in more than one place.
  • Reflection-based traversal should work with plain objects, DTOs, value objects, and most domain entities. Eloquent models are the risk area: lazy proxies, relation caches, and magic attributes can distort or explode the traversal.
  • Effort is low for a spike and medium to harden for production edge cases (cycles, proxies, uninitialized properties).

Technical risk

  • Vendor risk: 24 stars, 0 known dependents, single-maintainer Innmind ecosystem, no commercial support. Low bus factor. MIT permits forking, which is the main mitigation.
  • Behavioral risk: cyclic graphs, lazy proxies (Eloquent/Doctrine), closures, resources, uninitialized typed properties, and internal PHP classes are all plausible failure points for a reflection walker.
  • Performance risk: reflection-heavy traversal is linear in graph size but with high constants; deep/wide graphs risk recursion limits and memory spikes. Not suitable for hot paths.
  • Metadata anomaly: the listed release date (2026-03-01) is forward-dated relative to typical consumption; verify actual release cadence and changelog before pinning. The opportunity score (0.49) signals limited community traction — acceptable for a utility, relevant to support expectations.
  • API stability: Innmind libraries are typically disciplined about semver and strict typing, but the surface is idiosyncratic and documentation is terse.

Key questions

  • What are the traversal semantics — depth limits, cycle handling, identity by reference vs. value, ordering guarantees?
  • Is there a visitor/exporter abstraction to emit arrays, JSON, DOT/Graphviz, or only an internal graph type?
  • How are magic methods (__get, __isset), lazy proxies, and uninitialized properties treated?
  • What PHP versions and static-analysis levels are supported (PHPStan/Larastan compatibility)?
  • What is the time/memory envelope on graphs of 10^3–10^6 nodes?
  • Who maintains it, what is the release cadence, and is there a documented succession or fork path?
  • Does the graph model preserve edge labels/relationship names, or only topology?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Compatible at the language level with Laravel 10/11 (PHP 8.1/8.2+); no framework coupling to reconcile.
  • Complements rather than replaces Laravel serialization: use it where graph identity matters and toArray loses structure.
  • Strong fit for Artisan commands, queue jobs with bounded payloads, test utilities, and developer tooling (debug commands, Telescope extensions). Weak fit for API resources, session payloads, and Eloquent persistence.

Migration path

  • Purely additive — no migration required. Introduce behind an internal interface (e.g., ObjectGraphExporter) so the dependency stays swappable and testable.
  • Start with a POC on a single bounded context (one domain module's entities/DTOs), then decide on broader adoption based on measured behavior.
  • Do not retrofit into existing serialization paths; run in parallel until the adapter has contract tests.

Compatibility

  • Verify the PHP constraint against the app runtime and CI matrix.
  • Confirm behavior against Eloquent proxies: either normalize models to DTOs before extraction or explicitly exclude relationship attributes.
  • Run Larastan/PHPStan over a sample integration to confirm the package's type annotations are picked up; Innmind ships strict types but generics coverage varies.
  • Check for global state or static caches — expected to be none, but confirm for long-running workers (Octane, queue daemons).

Sequencing

  1. Spike: install, extract a representative domain object, measure time/memory, and probe cycle and proxy behavior.
  2. Wrap: define the adapter interface and a default implementation; add contract tests around edge cases (cycles, closures, uninitialized properties).
  3. Pilot: deploy in one non-critical path — a debug command or audit snapshot job.
  4. Evaluate: decide on broader use based on stability, performance data, and upstream activity.
  5. Document: record limitations and decision criteria in an ADR so future engineers know when to reach for it.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Small, single-purpose surface area keeps maintenance light, but low upstream activity means we may need to vendor or fork for fixes. MIT licensing makes forking viable.
  • Pin to an exact version, review the changelog on upgrade, and avoid floating constraints. Framework-agnostic design means no Laravel-version churn.
  • Add to the dependency-review list: track releases and advisories (low risk given introspection-only scope, but non-zero).

Support

  • Community-only via GitHub issues; no SLA. Acceptable for internal tooling, not for customer-facing critical paths.
  • Assign a named internal owner for the adapter and its tests to avoid orphaned integration.
  • Expect to read source rather than docs; Innmind documentation is intentionally terse.

Scaling

  • Traversal scales linearly with graph size but with high constants. Deep graphs risk recursion limits; wide graphs risk memory spikes.
  • Mitigate with depth bounds, node caps, and visitor-based streaming export for large graphs.
  • Not appropriate for per-request use on large Eloquent graphs; suitable for offline/batch and small tooling payloads.

Failure modes

  • Infinite recursion or stack overflow on cyclic graphs if not handled by the caller.
  • Lazy-loading Eloquent relations mid-traversal (N+1 queries) or proxy objects that misrepresent entity state.
  • Errors or silent skips on closures, resources, uninitialized typed properties, and internal PHP classes.
  • Data loss if the graph representation collapses value-equal but referentially distinct nodes.
  • Semantic drift if upstream changes graph node/edge semantics across versions.

Ramp-up

  • Small API surface: an engineer comfortable with PHP reflection and basic graph concepts is productive in under a day.
  • Team alignment needed on when to use it versus Laravel's native serialization; publish decision criteria alongside the adapter.
  • Budget roughly half a sprint for spike, adapter, and contract tests before committing to broader rollout.
