Elasticache Bundle Laravel Package

igniter/elasticache-bundle

Laravel/Igniter bundle for integrating AWS ElastiCache, adding configuration and cache store support to connect applications to managed Redis or Memcached clusters for scalable, centralized caching.

Getting Started

Treat igniter/elasticache-bundle as a legacy Symfony 2-era infrastructure bundle, not a modern cache abstraction. Before installing, check its composer.json constraints against your PHP/Symfony versions:

composer require igniter/elasticache-bundle

Register the bundle in app/AppKernel.php:

new Igniter\ElastiCacheBundle\IgniterElastiCacheBundle(),

Look first at:

  • README.md for the intended config shape and supported ElastiCache mode.
  • DependencyInjection/Configuration.php for the real config root and required keys.
  • Resources/config/services.xml for service IDs and constructor arguments.
  • The main client/resolver class for whether it returns endpoints, wraps Redis/Memcached, or calls AWS APIs.

A minimal first config should set AWS region, credentials source, and the ElastiCache cluster or replication group ID. Prefer environment variables or an IAM role over hard-coded keys. Then clear the container cache.

Your first practical use case should be small: inject the bundle service into one application service that resolves the cache endpoint, wire that endpoint into a Redis/Memcached client or Symfony cache pool, and smoke-test a set/get from a console command. Do not start by replacing every cache usage in the app; prove endpoint resolution and connectivity first.

Implementation Patterns

Keep the bundle behind an application-owned boundary. Create a CacheEndpointResolver or CacheFactory service that is the only place that knows about Igniter\ElastiCacheBundle. The rest of the app should depend on your interface or a PSR-6/PSR-16 adapter.

Typical day-to-day patterns:

  • Resolve once, reuse often. ElastiCache discovery usually means AWS API calls. Resolve the endpoint at deploy time, process boot, or behind a short-TTL application cache. Never call DescribeCacheClusters-style APIs on every request.
  • Map environments to clusters. Use %kernel.environment% or explicit env vars to select dev/staging/prod cluster IDs. Keep local development on local Redis/Memcached rather than reaching into AWS.
  • Separate discovery from the cache client. If the bundle only discovers endpoints, feed those endpoints into Predis, SncRedisBundle, a Memcached client, or a Symfony cache pool. If it provides a client, wrap it immediately in your own service so it can be replaced.
  • Support named connections. If the app uses multiple caches, model them as named connections rather than scattering cluster IDs through services.
  • Fail predictably. In production, fail fast when the endpoint cannot be resolved. In development/test, allow a local fallback so developers are not blocked by AWS/VPC issues.
  • Integrate with Symfony cache contracts where possible. Modern Symfony code should use cache.app, a custom pool, or PSR-6/PSR-16. This bundle predates those contracts, so adapt rather than leak its API into controllers.
  • Add a health check. A small console command or health endpoint that resolves the endpoint and performs a read/write is worth more than guessing from container config.
  • Test without AWS. Mock your resolver in unit tests and use local Redis/Memcached for integration tests. Treat real ElastiCache connectivity as a deployment smoke test, not a unit-test dependency.
  • Use compiler passes or decoration sparingly. If you need multiple resolvers or environment-specific behavior, decorate the bundle service or add a compiler pass in your app rather than forking the bundle immediately.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Age is the biggest risk. Last release was 2015, with 3 stars and 0 dependents. Expect Symfony 2.x/PHP 5.x assumptions and an old AWS SDK. It is unlikely to install cleanly on modern Symfony/PHP without conflicts.
  • Do not hard-code AWS credentials. Use IAM roles, instance profiles, or environment credentials. Confirm the region matches the ElastiCache cluster; a wrong region usually looks like “cluster not found.”
  • VPC and security groups matter. ElastiCache endpoints are internal. Your app must have network reachability to the cache subnet/security group. AWS API access and cache access are separate networking concerns.
  • Avoid config-time AWS calls. If the bundle resolves endpoints during container compilation, cache:clear and deploys can fail when AWS is slow or unavailable. Prefer lazy runtime resolution.
  • Watch API throttling and latency. Cache discovery results and use backoff/retry around AWS calls. Do not put discovery in a hot request path.
  • Security features may be missing. Older bundles often do not understand Redis AUTH, TLS, encryption in transit, or newer ElastiCache serverless/replication-group details. Verify before using it with secured clusters.
  • Memcached auto-discovery is not Redis discovery. ElastiCache behaves differently for Memcached clusters and Redis replication groups. Confirm which mode the bundle actually supports.
  • Debug with container inspection first. Use debug:container to confirm service IDs and arguments, check resolved parameters, enable bundle/AWS logging, and inspect CloudTrail when API calls fail. Clear cache after config changes.
  • Extension points are limited. Practical options are overriding parameters, decorating the bundle service, wrapping it in your own resolver, or forking the bundle. Keep application code independent so you can replace it later.
  • Day-to-day verdict: useful only in an existing legacy Symfony app already committed to ElastiCache and this bundle’s API. For new work, use the AWS SDK directly for discovery or a maintained Redis/Memcached Symfony integration and keep ElastiCache endpoint resolution in a small application service.
