Laravel Omnipay Laravel Package

ignited/laravel-omnipay

Laravel integration for the Omnipay payment library, giving you a clean, unified API to accept payments through PayPal, Stripe, Authorize.Net and dozens of other gateways. Configure drivers in Laravel, then purchase, authorize, capture, refund, and handle callbacks from one consistent interface.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • The package is a thin Laravel adapter, not a payment abstraction of its own: a service provider that reads config/omnipay.php, instantiates one or more Omnipay gateways, binds them into the container, and exposes a facade. The real abstraction — and the real dependency — is Omnipay itself; this package contributes configuration ergonomics and DI wiring (likely a few hundred LOC).
  • It fits the Laravel idiom well (publishable config, auto-discovery, facade) and is the right shape for an app that needs several PSPs behind one interface. It is the wrong tool if the actual need is subscription billing, proration, dunning, or a hosted billing portal — that is Cashier's problem domain, not this one.
  • Because it is an adapter over a third-party abstraction, the architectural decision that matters is "do we standardize on Omnipay?" not "do we adopt this package?" The package is replaceable with ~30 lines of your own service-provider code if it ever stalls.

Integration feasibility

  • Low effort to first transaction: composer require, publish config, declare a gateway with credentials, resolve via facade. A developer can reach sandbox purchase in under a day.
  • Feasibility risk concentrates in Composer constraint resolution, not in the code: Laravel version × PHP version × Omnipay major (v2 vs v3 differ materially in API) × each gateway package's own Omnipay/Guzzle pins. Two gateways can conflict on the same Omnipay major, which is exactly the multi-gateway case this package exists to serve.

Technical risk

  • Adoption signal is unverified. 515 stars against 0 Packagist dependents is inconsistent; treat popularity as unproven rather than as endorsement, and require a reference implementation before betting a revenue path on it.
  • Upstream dependency risk. Omnipay is a mature, slowly-moving ecosystem; individual gateway packages vary wildly in quality, test coverage, and maintainer attention. The wrapper cannot compensate for a weak gateway driver.
  • Security blast radius. The package handles PSP credentials and sits adjacent to cardholder data flows. MIT license with no visible security policy; confirm a disclosure path and pin versions.
  • Scope gap — the hard parts are yours. SCA/3DS2 challenge flows, idempotency keys, webhook/notification verification and replay handling, partial refunds, tokenization/vaulting, minor-unit currency handling, and reconciliation are not provided. That is where payment incidents actually come from.
  • Bus factor. Single-maintainer wrappers over fast-moving frameworks go stale quietly (Laravel 11/12 service-provider semantics, config caching, PHP 8.x deprecations). The 2026-04-22 release date is reassuring but should be verified as substantive, not a metadata bump.

Key questions

  • What is the supported matrix (Laravel, PHP, Omnipay major) and is it tested in CI, or asserted in composer.json only?
  • Do the specific gateway packages we need resolve together against one Omnipay major?
  • Who maintains it, what is the issue-response history, and is there a security disclosure process?
  • Why zero dependents — measurement artifact, private usage, or genuinely low adoption?
  • Does it add anything we cannot get from a 30-line provider binding and our own config file?
  • Does it survive php artisan config:cache and credential rotation without a redeploy?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Assumes a conventional Laravel service container + Guzzle HTTP client + queue workers. It does not solve the browser side: PCI SAQ-A posture still requires hosted fields or the PSP's own JS SDK for 3DS/SCA, so plan for a front-end integration in parallel.
  • Fit is strongest where the product genuinely needs gateway portability (multi-region, fallback PSP, per-tenant acquiring). Where a single PSP is used, the abstraction tax outweighs the benefit.

Migration path

  • From direct Omnipay usage: mechanical — move gateway construction into config, resolve through the container, delete hand-rolled instantiation.
  • From a bespoke PSP client or another wrapper: do not let the facade leak into domain code. Define a narrow internal PaymentGateway interface (authorize, capture, refund, void, webhook-verify) and implement it once over Omnipay. This makes the package swappable, keeps gateway-specific quirks isolated, and is the single highest-leverage design decision in the integration.

Compatibility

  • Build the matrix explicitly and test it in CI: Laravel LTS targets × PHP 8.x × Omnipay major × each gateway package. Pin gateway packages individually; they are the volatile edge.
  • Verify behavior under config:cache (closure-free config), queue serialization (do not serialize gateway objects into jobs), and Octane/worker reuse (no per-request state on the facade).

Sequencing

  1. Spike branch: resolve Composer constraints for the two target gateways and confirm they coexist. Kill the initiative here if they don't.
  2. One gateway, sandbox, happy path: purchase + refund + a failure case, behind the internal interface.
  3. Test harness: wire Omnipay's mock gateway into the suite so CI never touches a live PSP.
  4. Webhook endpoint: signature verification, idempotency store, out-of-order tolerance — before any production traffic.
  5. Second gateway: proves the multi-gateway config story the package is actually selling.
  6. Production readiness: timeouts, retry-with-idempotency, reconciliation job, credential rotation runbook. Canary on low-value transactions first.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Small integration surface (~1 file of config + gateway classes), but three moving parts to watch: the wrapper, Omnipay core, and each gateway package. Budget roughly 0.1 FTE steady-state, spiking to days per new gateway or per Omnipay major.
  • Maintain a fork-and-patch plan; the wrapper is small enough that vendoring or absorbing it is a credible fallback.

Support

  • Community-only, no SLA, likely single-maintainer. Escalation for a payment outage runs through you and, ultimately, the PSP — not through this package. Staff accordingly: on-call runbooks must assume the library is opaque.

Scaling

  • Stateless outbound HTTP; throughput is bounded by the PSP, not by Laravel. Scale concerns are operational: request timeouts, queue-backed retries, circuit breaking on PSP degradation, and never holding a DB transaction open across a gateway call.
  • Multi-gateway routing gives a real availability lever (failover PSP), but only if the internal interface and idempotency model are designed up front.

Failure modes

  • Timeout after the PSP processed the charge → unknown state; requires idempotency keys plus active reconciliation, not blind retry.
  • Heterogeneous exception types and semantics across gateway packages → normalize in the interface layer or every caller becomes gateway-aware.
  • Stale config:cache after credential rotation → auth failures that look like PSP outages.
  • Bad credentials surfacing at first transaction rather than at boot → add a startup/health-check probe.
  • Webhook replay, duplication, or out-of-order delivery → duplicate fulfillment and refund errors.
  • Currency minor-unit and zero-decimal-currency bugs, and 3DS redirect state lost across the challenge round-trip.

Ramp-up

  • A Laravel developer is productive on the facade within a day; the Omnipay gateway-specific API surface takes about a week per gateway.
  • Producing a correct payment integration — idempotency, reconciliation, webhooks, SCA — takes weeks and is entirely outside this package's scope. Staff the project against the payment domain, not against the wrapper; the wrapper is the easy 10%.
