Filament Rating Star Laravel Package

ibrahimbougaoua/filament-rating-star

Add interactive star ratings to Laravel Filament apps. Provides a clickable rating field for forms and a display column for tables, with configurable star counts, colors, and read-only modes for showing scores in admin panels. Simple to install and customize.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature delivery on admin surfaces, not customer surfaces. This is a Filament form field and table column — it buys you an interactive star input in admin forms and a read-only star display in admin tables. It does not give you a public-facing rating widget, so it should not enter scope for customer review capture UI.
  • Build vs. buy, narrowly framed. The honest framing is not "buy vs. build a rating system" — it's "adopt vs. spend half a day writing a Blade field." Because the package is a thin wrapper, the correct default is adopt-if-compatible, and treat replacement cost as near zero. Do not let it become an architectural dependency.
  • Common internal use cases it unblocks cheaply: review/feedback moderation queues, CSAT or NPS-style internal scoring, product or supplier quality ratings, skill/confidence matrices, and priority or severity scoring in ops tooling. These are all "we need a 5-star input by Friday" requests.
  • Roadmap positioning: commodity, not differentiator. Rating UI is table stakes. It should never appear on a roadmap as a value item; it should appear as an enabler that removes a small recurring tax on admin feature work.
  • Signal from the numbers. 42 stars, a single-maintainer profile, last release September 2024, and an overall score of ~2.79 are all consistent with "useful but fragile." The 3.41 opportunity score suggests narrow but real fit — worthwhile inside a Filament shop, irrelevant outside one.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You are already on Filament and need a star input plus a matching table column in an internal or admin-only tool.
  • The requirement is plain whole-star or half-star display with no bespoke behavior.
  • Your team is comfortable pinning a version and, if needed, forking a small MIT-licensed component.
  • The work is off the critical path and a few days of maintenance risk is acceptable.

Look elsewhere or build in-house when:

  • You are on, or about to upgrade to, a newer Filament major. A single-maintainer package last released in September 2024 is a likely laggard on major-version support — verify the composer constraint against your Filament version before anything else.
  • You need accessibility-first behavior (keyboard interaction, ARIA semantics), RTL support, custom icon sets, fractional precision beyond halves, or aggregate reporting on ratings. These are the usual gaps in small UI packages and are exactly where a bespoke field pays for itself.
  • You need a customer-facing component, server-side aggregation, or a vendor with a support commitment. None of those exist here.
  • Enterprise or compliance context where an unmaintained transitive dependency is a procurement blocker.

Due diligence checklist before adoption: read the source (it is small), confirm test coverage, check issue responsiveness and open bugs, and confirm the Filament version matrix.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A small, MIT-licensed UI component that saves roughly one to two developer days on admin rating inputs, at zero licensing cost. Risk is low and bounded because it is trivially replaceable — if it stops working, we write it ourselves in under a day. It is not a strategic dependency and should not be presented as one.

To engineering: It is a thin Filament field/column wrapper, not a platform. Pin the version, validate Filament compatibility first, and wrap it behind our own field class so a fork or swap is a one-file change. Budget a short spike to confirm half-star support, keyboard/ARIA behavior, and upgrade path before we commit it to more than one screen.
