Filament Menu Scroll Fix Laravel Package

ibrahimbougaoua/filament-menu-scroll-fix

A lightweight Filament plugin that resolves sidebar and navigation menu scrolling issues, keeping long menus usable and accessible in Laravel admin panels. Simple to install and designed as a drop-in fix for affected Filament layouts.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • Single-purpose UI-behavior patch for Filament admin panels. It targets a specific annoyance in Filament's navigation/menu rendering: clicking an item triggers an apparent reload and scroll-to-top, forcing the user to re-find their place in long lists.
  • Expected shape is a standard Filament plugin: a service provider with package auto-discovery, a plugin class registered on the Panel in a PanelProvider, and a small published asset (JS/CSS) or an inline FilamentAsset::register() call. It is additive and sits outside the request/domain layer, so it does not entangle itself with application business logic — a favorable architectural position for a UI nicety.
  • Because it hooks presentation-layer behavior, the real "architecture" dependency is not Laravel but Filament's internal DOM/Alpine/Livewire conventions, which is the least stable surface to bind to.

Integration feasibility

  • Low effort: composer require ibrahimbougaoua/filament-menu-scroll-fix, register the plugin on the relevant panel(s), publish assets if required, clear config/view/asset caches. A competent Laravel developer should complete and verify this in well under an hour.
  • Blast radius is small and reversible: removal is a composer line plus a plugin registration, with no migrations, no schema, no data model coupling. That makes it cheap to trial.

Technical risk

  • Maintainer/bus factor: one maintainer, 31 stars, last release April 2024 — effectively a hobby-scale artifact with no support commitment. Treat it as "unmaintained until proven otherwise."
  • Version drift: the release predates Filament v4-era changes. Version constraints on filament/filament and livewire/livewire are the single biggest compatibility question; an unconstrained or ^3.0-only requirement may make it uninstallable on newer panels.
  • Fragility of the fix: scroll/focus behavior is frequently implemented by patching DOM event handlers or overriding Blade views. Those implementations are the first things to break when Filament refactors its navigation markup. Failure can be silent (fix simply stops working) or noisy (JS exception breaks panel navigation).
  • Supply chain: small, low-audit package in a privileged admin surface. Source review is feasible given the size; treat composer audit and a manual read of the asset file as mandatory, not optional.
  • Duplicate-function risk: the fix is likely a handful of lines of JS/CSS. The dependency may cost more in governance than it saves in engineering.

Key questions

  • Which Filament major version(s) does it declare support for, and is the constraint narrow enough to be honest but wide enough to install?
  • Is the implementation a CSS/JS asset, a Blade view override, or a monkey-patch of Filament internals? (View overrides carry the highest upgrade risk.)
  • Does it ship compiled/minified assets, and are sources included for review?
  • Does it require filament:assets publishing, and does it degrade safely if assets are missing?
  • Is there any test coverage or CI, and is the repository still accepting issues/PRs?
  • Can the same behavior be achieved with a documented Filament hook, custom theme, or a few lines of Alpine in our own panel — and if so, why are we taking the dependency?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Assumes a Filament-based admin panel (Laravel + Livewire + Alpine + Tailwind). It fits cleanly only if our panels are on the Filament major it targets; on a different major, expect either an install conflict or a no-op.
  • No fit at all for front-end-only Laravel apps, Nova, or non-Filament admin surfaces — the addressable scope is one panel UI.

Migration path

  1. Spike in a disposable branch: install, register on a single non-critical panel, publish assets, hard-refresh.
  2. Reproduce the original defect first (long menu list, click item, observe scroll-to-top) so we have a before/after acceptance test rather than a vibes-based check.
  3. Verify behavior in the browsers we actually support, plus with JS disabled / CSP enforced.
  4. If it passes, promote panel-by-panel rather than globally.

Compatibility

  • Pin the package version explicitly and let Composer's solver arbitrate against our Filament/Livewire/PHP constraints; a --dry-run up front tells us in seconds whether this is even viable.
  • Check CSP posture — inline script injection will be blocked in a hardened panel and must be nonced/hashed or avoided.
  • Confirm no collision with other Filament plugins that touch navigation or tables (custom nav groups, menu builders, theme plugins).

Sequencing

  • Do this as a low-priority, self-contained ticket, not bundled with a Filament upgrade. Coupling a cosmetic patch to a framework bump makes bisecting failures harder.
  • If our Filament upgrade is already on the roadmap, sequence the upgrade first and re-evaluate this package against the post-upgrade version — the fix may be obsolete or may need a fork.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Realistic ongoing cost is low but non-zero: quarterly compatibility checks against Filament releases, plus asset republishing on deploy if assets are published rather than served from vendor/.
  • Recommend a deliberate "vendor-or-fork" decision up front: because the code is tiny, copying the asset into our own theme and crediting the MIT license removes an external dependency and its bus factor for roughly the same effort as wrapping it.

Support

  • No SLA, no vendor, GitHub issues only. Escalation path is "read the source and patch it ourselves," which is acceptable because the surface is small — this is the one condition under which the low star count is tolerable.
  • Document the fix's purpose and origin in an ADR-style note so a future engineer doesn't silently delete it as dead code during a cleanup.

Scaling

  • Negligible runtime cost: client-side focus/scroll handling, no queries, no server work, no per-request overhead.
  • Only scaling-adjacent concern is asset delivery on large internal user bases — serve published assets through the existing CDN/build pipeline, not per-request from the package path.

Failure modes

  • Silent regression: Filament markup changes, handler no longer binds, scroll bug returns. Detectable only via manual QA — low severity, easy to miss.
  • Noisy regression: JS error on navigation breaks panel UX broadly. Higher severity; warrants a smoke test on the admin panel post-deploy.
  • Install/solve conflict after a framework upgrade blocks deploys — mitigated by explicit version pinning and a lockfile, surfaced early in CI.
  • CSP or asset-publish misconfiguration in hardened environments results in "installed but inert."
  • Conflict with a peer plugin causes intermittent navigation glitches that are hard to attribute.

Ramp-up

  • Near-zero for any Laravel/Filament developer: two lines of configuration plus a cache clear. Documentation burden is one paragraph in the panel provider and one line in onboarding notes.
  • The only real ramp-up cost is organizational — ensuring the next person to touch the panel knows why the dependency exists and when to drop it.
