Laravel Web Soar Laravel Package

huangdijia/laravel-web-soar

Laravel integration for Web Soar, the PHP extension that profiles slow requests and runtime performance. Provides config publishing, middleware and service wiring, and slow-request reporting so you can trace bottlenecks in Laravel apps without touching raw extension setup.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Developer enablement / shift-left on database performance. This package wraps Xiaomi's SOAR (SQL Optimization And Rewriting) engine behind a Laravel artisan command and a browser UI. It lets engineers paste a slow or proposed query and get back rewrite suggestions, explain-style analysis, and index recommendations without filing a ticket with a DBA. That directly informs how much DBA time your team needs to budget and whether "SQL review" can become a self-serve step.
  • Release-gating and quality bars. Because it is scriptable via Artisan, it can support a decision like "should complex queries be reviewed before merge?" — either as an informal team practice or as a CI/staging step. Useful evidence when deciding whether to formalize a query-review checklist in your definition of done.
  • Index and schema roadmap input. For a feature in discovery, running candidate queries through SOAR gives an early read on whether the current schema supports the workload or whether the feature carries hidden migration/index cost. That's an input to scope and estimation, not just to engineering.
  • Build vs. buy vs. adopt. It's MIT-licensed and free, so the real cost is adoption effort (installing the external SOAR binary, wiring config, securing the route). The decision is less "buy" and more "standardize on this internal tool" versus "keep ad-hoc EXPLAIN plus cloud DB advisors."
  • Tooling consolidation. If your team already has database observability (APM, EXPLAIN in the IDE, cloud performance insights), this becomes a question of whether an extra browser surface earns its place or just adds another place to look.
  • Not a product-facing capability. There is no end-user feature to roadmap here. Treat any evaluation as internal tooling spend, measured in engineer hours saved and incidents avoided, not in customer outcomes.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt or pilot when:

  • Your stack is MySQL/MariaDB and likely to stay there — SOAR is built around MySQL semantics, so its advice degrades or is irrelevant on Postgres.
  • You have no dedicated DBA or a heavily contended one, and engineers routinely guess at indexes.
  • You want a browser-based, zero-install-for-the-user surface. The whole point of this wrapper is that a teammate can hit a route instead of everyone installing the Go CLI locally.
  • You are comfortable installing and pinning an external SOAR binary in dev/staging images.
  • The tool will live in local or staging only, behind auth, on a network your team already trusts.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Package health is a gate for you. ~17 stars, a single maintainer, and a low overall health score mean this is a convenience wrapper, not a supported product. Assume you own the maintenance risk.
  • You need a vendor relationship, SLA, or security review sign-off. There is none here. If procurement or security requires a supported dependency, this fails that bar.
  • You're on Postgres, SQL Server, or a distributed/NewSQL store. Use native EXPLAIN ANALYZE, pg_stat_statements, or a query advisor built for that engine.
  • Your cloud provider already ships this. Aurora/RDS Performance Insights, Cloud SQL Query Insights, and PlanetScale's insights cover much of the same ground with no extra binary to babysit.
  • You only need in-request profiling. Laravel Telescope, Debugbar, or a query-count detector answers "which queries did this request run and how slow were they" more cheaply than a paste-a-query tool.
  • Exposing an analysis endpoint in production is on the table. That's a security decision this package does not solve for you.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a free, MIT-licensed internal developer tool that gives engineers instant, expert-style feedback on database queries in the browser. It targets a common and expensive failure mode — slow queries shipped to production because nobody with database expertise was available to review them. The investment is a few engineer-hours of setup in dev/staging; the return is fewer performance incidents and less DBA bottleneck. It is deliberately scoped as internal tooling, carries no customer-facing risk, and can be trialed and dropped at essentially zero cost. The main caveat to state plainly: it is a small open-source wrapper around Xiaomi's SOAR engine with limited community adoption, so we should treat it as a convenience layer we own, not a supported platform.

For engineering: SOAR is a solid, well-known SQL optimizer/rewriter from Xiaomi; this package just gives it a Laravel service provider, an Artisan entry point, and a web UI so the team doesn't each install the CLI. It is MySQL-focused, requires the SOAR binary present on the host, and must be restricted to local/staging behind auth. If the wrapper goes stale, the underlying binary and CLI remain usable — so the downside is bounded. Pilot it on one team's slowest endpoints for a sprint, measure whether it catches anything EXPLAIN didn't, and decide from there.
