Hpcloud Php Laravel Package

hpcloud/hpcloud-php

HPCloud PHP is a PHP SDK for integrating applications with HP Cloud services. It provides authentication and clients for identity, object storage, and compute APIs, helping developers manage cloud resources and build integrations with less boilerplate.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for object storage and CDN integration: This release is a maintenance release for an SDK that wraps an OpenStack/Swift-style object storage API plus CDN controls. Adopting it replaces hand-rolled HTTP/cURL clients and signing logic with a maintained abstraction — a clear "buy" (or "reuse") decision against building and owning that integration ourselves.
  • Cross-platform support commitments: Tickets #3, #15, and #13 (Windows curl failures, unconditional posix_geteuid call, hardcoded tmp temp directory) were blocking Windows-based development and CI. With these fixed, we can commit to Windows dev environments and mixed-OS pipelines without carving out an exception for storage features.
  • Transport strategy / infrastructure flexibility: #14 (transport.debug now honored by the PHP Stream layer) and #13 (content-length interaction with proxies under curl) mean both the curl and native stream transports are now viable in production, including behind corporate proxies. This supports a decision to standardize on one transport rather than supporting both defensively.
  • Do not plan DBaaS features on this dependency: 1.3.0 removes DBaaS support outright because it targeted a private beta API that is now deprecated. Any roadmap item, prototype, or customer commitment depending on database provisioning through this package must be re-scoped or dropped.
  • Vendor-risk and exit planning: The documentation updates reference HP Helion OpenStack and HP Helion Public Cloud, and the DBaaS removal is driven by a vendor API deprecation. This is a leading indicator of platform wind-down, and should trigger an explicit roadmap decision (isolate behind an interface, budget a migration) rather than a passive "keep using it" default.

When to Consider This Package

Consider adoption when:

  • We are already on an OpenStack/Swift-compatible object storage endpoint (including HP Helion-era deployments) and need CDN and access/secret key management in the same client.
  • Our team develops or runs CI on Windows and needs parity with Linux/macOS — 1.3.0 is the first release where that's defensible.
  • We expect to deploy behind a proxy, or need to toggle transport-level debug logging in non-production environments.
  • We want a low-effort integration and are comfortable pinning to a library whose upstream vendor API is being deprecated.

Look elsewhere when:

  • We are on AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage, or Azure Blob. The right layer is a first-party or Flysystem-backed Laravel adapter, not this SDK.
  • We need active feature development, modern PHP/Laravel version guarantees, or a roadmap. The 1.3.0 changelog is entirely bug fixes plus one removal — there are no new capabilities here.
  • Any requirement touches managed database provisioning. That capability was removed in this release.
  • We cannot tolerate vendor end-of-life risk. The HP Helion references and the beta-API deprecation pattern suggest the underlying service is not a long-term bet.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a maintenance release of an object storage/CDN client library. It fixes real reliability defects — notably Windows support, proxy handling, and debug logging — so it reduces operational friction at essentially zero integration cost. The strategic caveat is vendor risk: the release removes DBaaS support because the upstream API is deprecated, and the documentation still points at HP Helion, a service line being wound down. Recommendation: continue using it for storage and CDN, but treat it as a component to be isolated behind an internal interface, and fund a migration spike rather than assuming indefinite vendor support.

For engineering: Upgrade is low-risk for storage/CDN users and unblocks Windows dev and CI. Two things to check before merging: (1) confirm nothing in our code path calls the removed DBaaS APIs, and (2) verify behavior behind any proxy we sit behind, since the content-length fix in #13 changes request framing. Pin the version, and add a regression test for transport debug output and temp-directory handling so these Windows-specific fixes don't silently regress.
