Console Laravel Package

hoa/console

Hoa\Console is a PHP library for building command-line applications. It provides terminal abstraction, cursor and window control, readline-style input, process management, option parsing, and I/O helpers, making rich interactive CLI tools easier to develop and maintain.

Technical Evaluation

  • Architecture fit: Poor for Laravel. hoa/console is a standalone CLI abstraction for commands, streams, terminals, and input/output. It has no Laravel service provider, configuration, facade, or Artisan integration. Laravel already standardizes on Symfony Console for Artisan; adding Hoa would duplicate command dispatch, argument parsing, and IO handling rather than complement the framework.
  • Integration feasibility: Low. The package can theoretically be installed via Composer, but it is archived, last released in 2017, and likely constrained to older PHP versions. Modern Laravel requires PHP 8.1+, so compatibility is a gating issue. Any integration would need a custom bridge or isolated CLI process, not a normal Laravel package adoption.
  • Technical risk: High. The project is archived, unmaintained, and has no upstream security or compatibility patches. It has effectively no dependent ecosystem signal. Terminal behavior is platform-sensitive, and old Hoa dependencies may conflict with modern Composer resolution or Laravel’s Symfony components.
  • Key questions: Does it run on PHP 8.2/8.3? Are there known CVEs or abandoned transitive dependencies? Does it provide any terminal capability not already covered by Symfony Console, Laravel Prompts, or Termwind? Can it be isolated as a separate CLI binary rather than loaded into the Laravel app? Who would own a fork and security patching? Is there any existing legacy Hoa usage that must be preserved?

Integration Approach

  • Stack fit: Do not integrate hoa/console into a Laravel application as a runtime dependency. Use Laravel Artisan/Symfony Console for commands and Laravel Prompts or Symfony helpers for interactive terminal UX. Treat Hoa as a reference implementation at most.
  • Migration path: No viable migration into modern Laravel. If an existing tool already uses Hoa, wrap it as a standalone CLI invoked through Symfony Process or a container entrypoint, then migrate command definitions to Artisan/Symfony Console incrementally. Do not introduce new Hoa dependencies.
  • Compatibility: Validate in an isolated sandbox with the target PHP matrix. Expect deprecation warnings or fatal errors on PHP 8+. Composer platform pinning to old PHP would be a blocker for Laravel 10/11/12. Windows terminal and extension assumptions also need explicit testing.
  • Sequencing: First inventory any existing Hoa usage and PHP constraints. Then run a time-boxed compatibility spike. If a capability gap is proven, prototype an isolated wrapper rather than in-process integration. Define replacement exit criteria and migrate to Symfony Console. Default decision for new work: reject adoption.

Operational Impact

  • Maintenance: High burden. The package is archived, so any bug fix, PHP upgrade, or security patch becomes internal fork work. Documentation is old and sparse relative to current Laravel/Symfony conventions.
  • Support: No upstream support path. The repository is read-only, community usage is minimal, and there is no vendor SLA. Internal ownership would be required for any production use.
  • Scaling: CLI process scaling is less about throughput and more about reliability across environments. Wrapping an old CLI adds a process boundary, platform dependencies, and terminal-state complexity. It does not improve Laravel’s operational model.
  • Failure modes: PHP version incompatibility, Composer dependency conflicts, missing readline/posix extensions, Windows terminal inconsistencies, stream/exit-code handling defects, abandoned transitive dependencies, and unfixed security issues. Failures may appear only on specific terminals or PHP builds.
  • Ramp-up: Initial API learning is modest, but long-term ramp-up is expensive because engineers must learn an obsolete library and potentially maintain a fork. Laravel teams already know Symfony Console, making Hoa a net negative for onboarding. TPM recommendation: use only in isolated legacy scenarios with a funded replacement plan; otherwise avoid.
