Nova Places Laravel Package

hnassr/nova-places

A Laravel Nova field that adds Google Places autocomplete to your forms. Users search and select addresses or locations as they type, and the chosen place details are saved. Just add your Google Maps API key to get fast, accurate location input in Nova resources.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for address capture (back-office only). This is a Nova field — it lives in admin/ops panels, not customer-facing checkout. The real decision it informs is which geocoding provider you buy from, not whether to buy this package. The package itself is a thin UI wrapper (an input component + a service provider that registers JS assets) around a third-party autocomplete API.
  • Data-quality decisions at the point of capture. Address autocomplete is usually justified by reducing bad shipping/billing records, manual correction work, and downstream support tickets. If you care about that, you also need to decide whether to persist structured fields (street, city, region, postal code, country, lat/lng) rather than a single free-text string — this package's model is a single address field, so using it implicitly defers that decision.
  • Reference implementation for a custom field. The most defensible product use is as a pattern: read it, copy the approach, and build a ~1–3 day internal Nova field against a maintained provider. That is cheaper in total cost of ownership than adopting an archived dependency.
  • Roadmap anti-signal. Do not let this package appear on a roadmap as a dependency. Archived since 2020, 14 stars, no maintained release line — any plan involving it is a migration plan, not a build plan.
  • Vendor-risk decision. Algolia Places, the API this field calls, was deprecated and shut down by Algolia. That makes the package's core function dependent on a service you likely cannot obtain, which converts this from "adopt a package" into "pick a replacement provider" (Google Places, Mapbox, HERE, or self-hosted Pelias/Nominatim).

When to Consider This Package

Only consider it if all of the following hold:

  • You are on Laravel Nova 3 and have verified the field works against your exact Nova/Laravel/PHP versions. Nova 4+ changed asset registration and field conventions; assume incompatibility until proven otherwise in a spike, not in code review.
  • You have confirmed, in writing, that Algolia Places is still reachable with valid credentials and acceptable terms for your account. Verify before anything else — if the API is gone, the rest is moot.
  • The surface is internal, low-traffic, non-critical (ops data entry, not order fulfillment or billing), with a small user base and tolerance for the widget silently breaking.
  • You are time-boxing an evaluation to under a day and can walk away.

Look elsewhere if:

  • The form is customer-facing, revenue-affecting, or feeds shipping/tax/fraud logic.
  • You need structured/validated addresses, international coverage guarantees, an SLA, or data-residency/GDPR clarity on where address strings are sent.
  • You are on Nova 4/5, or on a PHP/Laravel version outside the 2020 support window.
  • You need security patching or a maintainer who will respond — archived repos with a single maintainer and 14 stars give you neither, and the field loads third-party JS client-side, so key scoping and CSP behavior are on you to audit.
  • You want a maintained alternative: a small in-house Nova field wrapping Google Places, Mapbox, or HERE is a few hundred lines and gets you an SLA, docs, and a supported SDK.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives (one paragraph): We evaluated hnassr/nova-places, a small add-on that adds address autocomplete to our internal admin tool. It is not a platform decision and it is not a candidate for adoption: the repo has been archived since 2020, has a single maintainer and negligible community, and — critically — it depends on Algolia Places, a service Algolia has since discontinued. Adopting it would mean taking on a dependency that is already broken at the vendor layer. The underlying business question (should our ops forms autocomplete addresses to reduce bad data?) is worth answering, and the cost is low: a maintained geocoding provider plus roughly 1–3 engineering days for a purpose-built field.

To engineering: Treat this repo as reference code, not a dependency. Read the component and service provider, then implement the same pattern against a provider we can actually contract with. No forked maintenance, no unpinned third-party JS, no archived code in the supply chain. Flag that the API key ships to the browser — scope it server-side and restrict it by referrer/domain.

Recommendation: Do not adopt. Harvest the pattern, choose a maintained provider in a short spike, and budget the small internal build. If someone has already wired this into a branch, treat it as tech debt with a named owner and a replacement date.
