hengebytes/setting-bundle
Hengebytes SettingBundle provides a flexible settings layer for PHP applications: persist configuration values in the database, read and update them at runtime, and keep environment-specific options organized behind a clean, framework-friendly API.
manage command can now set an empty value — closes a gap where operators could read or set populated values via CLI but had to fall back to editing files (or a DB console) to blank something out. For a PM this is a signal that the package is maturing as an operations surface, not just a library: the CLI is being treated as a first-class, complete interface rather than a convenience wrapper. That is the kind of completeness that determines whether support/ops can self-serve.Adopt when:
Look elsewhere when:
manage command is the only interface and you need transactional guarantees or concurrent-write safety at scale — verify this before committing. Before adopting on the strength of this release, verify: what "empty" means in storage, whether it is distinguishable from "unset," and whether existing read paths treat the two identically. A patch that changes what an empty value means is small in code and large in behaviour.
To executives: A low-risk maintenance release on a Laravel package we use for runtime configuration. It makes our operational command line able to clear a value as well as set one — previously that required a manual file edit. No breaking changes, no migration, no customer-visible impact. The value is reduced toil and fewer manual production edits during incidents, which is a small but real reduction in operational risk.
To engineering: Patch-level, backwards compatible, no API or schema change. The upgrade is a dependency bump. The one thing worth five minutes of review is the semantics of an empty value — confirm our read paths don't conflate "empty" with "unset," and that we aren't relying on the old inability to blank a key. If we script this command in deploy or rollback steps, add a test that covers clearing a value.
To ops/support: You can now fully manage these values from the CLI, including resetting them to blank, which means the documented runbook no longer has an "edit the file by hand" escape hatch. That is the difference between a procedure we can automate and one we can't.
Recommendation: Adopt the patch; treat the command surface as now feature-complete for operational use, and revisit the "build a small internal admin UI" decision only if governance requirements (audit, RBAC, approvals) appear — this package does not address those and shouldn't be expected to.
