Filament Natural Language Filter Laravel Package

hayderhatem/filament-natural-language-filter

A Filament plugin that lets users filter tables with natural-language queries. It translates plain-English requests into structured filters, making complex data tables easier to search without building manual filter forms. Useful for admin panels and dashboards.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • It is a Filament plugin, i.e. a standard Laravel package (service provider + publishable config + optional assets). Mechanically it slots into an existing Laravel/Filament app without new infrastructure.
  • It adds a natural-language input surface over Filament table filters. Architecturally this is a thin UX layer — but it introduces an out-of-band dependency (an LLM) directly onto the admin panel's data path, which is disproportionate weight for a filtering widget.
  • Critical unknown: whether it generates constrained filter state (safer) or composes free-form Eloquent/SQL from model output (much riskier). This single fact should drive the go/no-go.

Integration feasibility

  • Low mechanical effort: composer require, publish config, register the plugin on the target Filament panel, set provider credentials.
  • Real effort sits in (a) choosing/approving the LLM endpoint, (b) mapping the NL surface to each resource's filterable schema, and (c) validating accuracy against real user phrasing.
  • Version coupling to Filament (v3 vs v4) and Livewire is the primary compatibility risk; verify composer constraints rather than inferring from the 2025-06-02 release date.

Technical risk — high

  • Adoption/supply chain: 13 stars, one maintainer, no visible community. Treat the code as unaudited; assume we own the fork if we adopt.
  • Data egress: NL filtering implies sending user input — and plausibly schema, column names, and sample values — to a third-party model. For an admin panel over sensitive data this is the gating issue, not a nice-to-have.
  • Prompt injection → query injection: the model is now part of the query-construction attack surface. Need proof that output is allowlisted, not interpolated.
  • Non-determinism: identical phrasing yields different filters, which is hostile to auditability, support, and any regulated workflow.
  • Cost/latency per interaction: token spend and 500 ms–3 s round-trips on a UI that otherwise responds instantly.

Key questions

  1. Which providers are supported, and can it target a self-hosted/VPC endpoint (Ollama, vLLM, Bedrock) so no data leaves our boundary?
  2. Exactly what is transmitted per request — user text only, or schema + prompt template + values?
  3. Is output an allowlisted filter structure with validation/rejection, or raw query fragments?
  4. Supported Filament/Laravel/Livewire versions — is there a stated compatibility matrix and test suite?
  5. Who maintains it, what is the bus factor, and is there CI/static analysis?
  6. Does it degrade gracefully to standard filters when the model is down or returns garbage?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Only relevant if we are already on Laravel + Filament and the target is an admin panel. Otherwise the package is inert.
  • Best value on internal, read-mostly admin screens with wide tables and non-technical operators. Poor fit for customer-facing views or regulated data without a private model endpoint.

Migration path

  • No data migration; purely additive UI. The revert path is "turn the plugin off and use stock filters," which keeps blast radius small.
  • Contain it behind a per-resource feature flag so exposure is opt-in and measurable.

Compatibility

  • Pin the Filament major and validate against our exact PHP/Livewire combination in CI.
  • Confirm the LLM SDK dependency is one we can also pin and audit (openai-php / Prism / raw HTTP).

Sequencing

  1. Spike (1–2 days): install on a throwaway branch, wire one table, capture the network trace. Deliverable: a data-flow diagram of everything leaving the app.
  2. Security/legal review: approve the egress path or require a self-hosted model. Hard gate.
  3. POC: one internal, low-sensitivity resource, feature-flagged. Instrument latency, cost per query, and accuracy against a hand-labeled set of ~50 real phrases.
  4. Gate: accuracy, cost, and egress all acceptable → expand resource by resource. Otherwise stop.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Single-maintainer, low-adoption package: plan to vendor or pin to a patched fork, and budget re-validation on every Filament upgrade.

Support

  • Two support surfaces — the plugin and the model provider. Users will report "it filtered wrong," so log NL input, generated filter, and applied result from day one to make incidents replayable.

Scaling

  • Cost scales with query volume, not row count. Enforce debounce, cache common phrasings, and rate-limit per user.
  • The LLM round-trip is visible in the UX; without async/spinner handling it will read as a broken admin panel.

Failure modes

  • Provider outage, rate limit, or quota exhaustion → must fall back to standard filters, never an empty table.
  • Unparsable or unsafe output → reject, log, fall back.
  • Silent misinterpretation (valid query, wrong intent) is the dangerous one because it looks successful. Mitigate by surfacing the applied filters explicitly and requiring confirmation for destructive scopes.
  • Model deprecation at the provider → pin model versions.

Ramp-up

  • Plugin ramp-up is small; LLM-ops ramp-up is not. Budget roughly one engineer-week to productionize a single resource, plus ongoing ownership of an evaluation set and cost monitoring.
  • Given 13 stars and a 0.255 maturity score, run this as a time-boxed experiment with an explicit kill criterion rather than committing it as a platform dependency.
