Laravel User Activity Laravel Package

haruncpi/laravel-user-activity

Laravel User Activity is a lightweight package for monitoring and logging user actions in Laravel apps. It tracks logins, logouts, page visits, and other activity in a database-backed log, with simple setup and an easy way to review recent user behavior.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature scoping: "recent account activity" surface. The package answers a recurring, low-effort feature request — showing users their own logins, page visits, IP, and user agent — without a data pipeline. A PM can ship a credible security/session-transparency screen inside an existing Laravel app in days, not sprints.
  • Support and trust operations. Having a per-user activity record turns "I didn't do that / I can't find it" tickets into a lookup. This informs decisions on whether to invest in admin tooling, and gives support a factual timeline before escalating to engineering.
  • Build vs. buy on audit logging. The package is the cheap end of the audit spectrum. It settles the "do we build an activity log?" question for MVPs and internal tools, and its limits (request-level, not field-level diffs) become the evidence base for a later build/buy decision when compliance requirements arrive.
  • Security roadmap input. Login/IP/agent history is the substrate for anomaly detection, "new device" notices, and forced-session-revocation. Even if anomaly detection is deferred, capturing the data now avoids a backfill problem later — a sequencing decision a PM owns.
  • Packaging and monetization signals. If the activity feed is user-facing and valuable, it can be gated (e.g., audit history retention as a paid tier). The package's storage-based retention model makes "30 days vs. 1 year" a natural plan differentiator.
  • Retention and privacy policy decisions. Because it persists IP addresses and user agents, it forces an explicit stance on retention windows, PII minimization, and data-subject deletion — decisions that are cheaper to make before launch than after.
  • Instrumentation buy-in. It provides a stopgap "what are users doing" dataset for roadmap prioritization when a real product-analytics tool isn't budgeted or approved yet.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • The app is Laravel, traffic is moderate (internal tools, B2B SaaS with hundreds to low thousands of daily active users), and the ask is "show me recent activity," not "prove compliance."
  • You need a working admin/user-facing activity view within a sprint, and the team would otherwise defer it indefinitely.
  • Requirements are satisfied by request-level records: who, when, method, URL/route, IP, user agent.
  • You accept single-maintainer dependencies for non-critical-path functionality (425 stars, one author) — appropriate for an additive feature, inappropriate for anything the product cannot run without.
  • Your retention story can be a scheduled prune job you write yourself.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need field-level audit trails (before/after values, model diffs, who changed price from X to Y) — spatie/laravel-activitylog or owen-it/laravel-auditing fit better. This package records that a request happened, not what changed.
  • You face compliance regimes (SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR audit obligations) requiring tamper-evidence, immutability, guaranteed retention, or export/legal hold. Middleware writes to a mutable table do not meet that bar.
  • You expect high request volume: logging every request on a busy app bloats the table fast and adds a write to the request path. Weigh storage cost and query latency; consider async logging or sampling.
  • You need product analytics (funnels, cohorts, retention curves). This is not an analytics tool and will not substitute for PostHog/Segment.
  • Maintenance risk is unacceptable — no active maintainer commitment or a hard requirement for Laravel version guarantees. Plan a fork or a thin in-house middleware wrapper.
  • Multi-tenancy, PII redaction, or query-param sanitization are must-haves; verify before committing, since URLs can capture sensitive query strings.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, reversible dependency that unlocks a customer-facing "recent activity / login history" feature and gives support a factual timeline for account disputes — both common drivers of churn and ticket volume. Cost is roughly one engineer for a few days plus modest database growth. It does not make us compliant with audit standards, and we should not market it as such; treat it as a foundation we can later replace or extend.

To engineering: Low integration surface — composer install, publish migration/config, register middleware, index user_id and created_at, and add a scheduled prune job (we own retention). Two caveats to validate in the spike: it captures full URLs (query strings may contain PII — plan redaction), and request-level logging will inflate the table under load, so confirm write cost against our traffic profile before enabling globally rather than on selected routes.

The ask: Approve a one-sprint spike behind a feature flag on a single surface (user account settings), with an explicit retention policy and a documented exit path — either to a field-level auditing package or an in-house middleware — if compliance or scale requirements change.
