Laravel Id Generator Laravel Package

haruncpi/laravel-id-generator

Laravel ID Generator creates unique, customizable IDs for database records. It supports prefixes, suffixes, fixed lengths, and sequence resets, making it easy to generate invoice, order, ticket, and other formatted IDs without manual tracking.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Customer-facing identifier strategy. Enables decisions like "invoices/orders/tickets should read INV-2024-00042 instead of a UUID." This directly affects support workflows, verbal reference over phone, and CSV/report readability — a real UX and ops-cost lever, not just a database detail.
  • Build vs. buy for a commodity utility. This package is ~a few dozen lines of SELECT MAX(...) + string formatting. The decision it informs is whether formatted-ID generation deserves a third-party dependency at all, or whether it belongs in a small internal trait/base model. Default position: it's a commodity — own it.
  • Scope of an ID-format contract. Choosing a format (prefix, date segment, zero-padded sequence, per-tenant scope) is a product decision with downstream consumers: finance reconciliation, support tooling, printed documents, and any partner API that receives the ID. Once shipped, it's effectively immutable.
  • Roadmap sequencing on scaling. The implementation pattern (read-max-then-insert) is a constraint on write concurrency. Adopting it now is a decision to defer high-throughput/partitioned writes — fine for internal admin tooling, not fine for an order pipeline at scale.
  • Legacy vs. greenfield triage. This is a 2019-era utility. It's a low-stakes fit for a legacy Laravel 5/6 internal app; adopting it in a new Laravel 10/11 build is a roadmap risk with no strategic upside.
  • Security posture for public identifiers. Sequential, predictable IDs are enumerable. Choosing this format is implicitly deciding that authorization, not obscurity, protects every resource — a decision worth stating explicitly rather than inheriting by default.

When to Consider This Package

Reasonable fit when:

  • The app is Laravel 5.5–6.x / PHP 7.x — i.e., era-matched to the package's last release (Oct 2019) and already frozen on those versions.
  • You need simple per-model formatted sequences (prefix + optional date + padded counter) and nothing more.
  • Write volume on the target table is low (internal tools, admin panels, back-office records), so the read-then-insert race is a non-issue in practice.
  • The ID is internal-facing or the surface is already behind strict authorization.
  • You're willing to vendor/fork the code and pin it — treating it as copied source rather than a live dependency.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You're on Laravel 8+ or PHP 8+. No release since October 2019 and no evident maintainer activity; assume incompatibility until proven otherwise, and budget for a fork if you proceed.
  • Throughput matters. Generation is not atomic. Under concurrent inserts you can produce duplicates; you'd need a unique index plus retry logic, which erodes the "easy" value proposition.
  • Writes are distributed or sharded, or you need multi-region/offline allocation — sequences don't partition.
  • The ID is security-sensitive or public-facing. Sequential IDs leak volume (a competitor can infer order counts from your invoice numbers) and invite enumeration.
  • Finance/legal requires gap-free numbering. Counter-based generation with rollbacks and deletes will produce gaps; that's a different (and harder) problem.
  • A maintained alternative already fits: native AUTO_INCREMENT, Str::ulid() (Laravel 9+), ramsey/uuid, or a small in-house trait. All are lower-risk than an unmaintained dependency.

Verdict: Adopt only as vendored code in a legacy context, or not at all. For a new build, reimplement — the maintenance burden is under a day and the dependency risk is permanent.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, single-purpose utility for making database IDs human-readable — invoice numbers people can read over the phone instead of UUIDs. It's cheap to try but effectively unmaintained since 2019, so I don't want it as a long-term dependency. Recommendation: approve it only for legacy or internal tooling, and allocate roughly half a day for engineering to vendor the code or reproduce it in-house. Do not put it on the roadmap as infrastructure — nothing strategic depends on it, and the "buy" option here is barely cheaper than the build.

For engineering: Small, readable API surface — prefix + date + padded sequence per model. Two things to flag before adoption: no release since October 2019 (verify against your Laravel/PHP version before committing), and generation is a non-atomic read-max-then-insert, so it needs a unique constraint and duplicate-retry handling under any real concurrency. If we proceed: vendor it, pin the version, add a concurrency test, and document the ID format as a stable contract with downstream consumers. If we're greenfield, a 30–60 line trait or Str::ulid() gives us the same outcome with no external dependency and no abandonment risk.
