Refine Nova Laravel Package

hammerstone/refine-nova

Integrate Refine's React admin framework into Laravel Nova. Build custom tools and pages with Refine components while reusing Nova resources, models, authentication, and APIs—ideal for adding rich, reactive CRUD interfaces to your Nova admin.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin/internal-tool filtering roadmap. This package is a bridge between Laravel Nova (the backend admin layer) and Refine's React query-builder UI. It directly supports decisions about whether to invest in a richer, nested-AND/OR filtering experience for internal users — support, ops, finance, compliance — without hand-rolling a filter DSL and its query-translation layer.
  • Build vs. buy for filter UX. Every internal tool eventually needs "filter by multiple conditions, group them, save the view." This package is a concrete buy/borrow option for that slice of the product, letting the team spend engineering time on domain logic (permissions, workflows, data model) rather than on a query builder component and its Laravel-side translation.
  • Frontend/backend stack alignment. It makes an implicit architectural bet visible: are we a Nova-first shop, a React/Refine shop, or a hybrid? Adopting it signals willingness to run a React admin surface in front of a Laravel API, which affects hiring, design system reuse, and future admin-tool decisions.
  • Use cases worth scoping against it: customer-360 and account-exploration dashboards for support; incident and ticket triage with compound conditions; audit/reporting views where analysts need ad-hoc slices; internal "saved segments" features.
  • Opportunity vs. adoption read. High opportunity score (0.87) with very low adoption (34 stars, 0 dependents) is a classic "real problem, thin ecosystem" signal. The latest release (v0.2.4, a hedged Nova 3 bugfix — see below) does not change that read. Treat it as a capability reference as much as a dependency — even if we don't adopt it, it validates demand for a first-class nested-filter experience in our admin tooling.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • We are already standardized on Laravel Nova and are introducing (or already have) a React/Refine admin surface — the package only pays off at that seam.
  • Users genuinely need compound, grouped boolean filters, not the single-column filters Nova ships with out of the box. If a dropdown and a date range suffice, this is over-engineering.
  • The engineering team is comfortable pinning a version, vendoring, or forking a small glue package, and can own that maintenance internally.
  • The admin tool is internal-facing, where a dependency hiccup is an inconvenience rather than a customer-facing outage.
  • We want to prototype quickly and can accept that the integration may be replaced later if the internal tool becomes business-critical.

Look elsewhere when:

  • We are a Nova-only shop. Use Nova's native filters and custom filter classes; this package adds a second UI paradigm and a React build pipeline for marginal gain.
  • We need vendor support, SLAs, or a security-review-friendly dependency. Low stars, no dependents, and a single maintainer shipping patch releases with unverified "I think!" fix notes mean the maintenance burden lands on us.
  • The requirement is permissions-aware filtering, saved views, or shareable segments — those are product features to build or buy at a higher layer, not something this glue package delivers on its own.
  • We are on a short-horizon roadmap with no React appetite. Introducing Refine just to get a filter builder inverts the cost/benefit.
  • Compliance or data-residency constraints require a fully audited, in-house query layer; a thinly-adopted third-party translator is a poor place to accept that risk.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, cheap accelerator for our internal admin tools, not a platform bet. It lets analysts and support staff slice data with real, grouped filters instead of pre-baked views — the kind of capability that usually costs a sprint or two of custom frontend work. The trade-off is maturity: it's a one-maintainer package with little adoption, and its newest patch is a self-described "I think" fix for Nova 3 — credible signals of a side project, not a supported product. We should treat it as borrowed code we may need to own. Recommendation: pilot it on one internal tool, keep the blast radius small, and revisit if that tool becomes business-critical.

To engineering: It's a thin integration between Nova and Refine's query builder — a translation layer from Refine's filter payloads to Laravel/Nova queries. Low integration surface, but also low bus factor and no dependents, so plan to pin the version and be ready to vendor or fork. Note that the current head (v0.2.4) is a Nova 3 compatibility patch landed without changelog detail — verify it actually fixes our Nova version before relying on it, and keep our own regression test around the filter payload translation. The real question is architectural: are we committing to a React admin surface in front of Laravel? If yes, this saves meaningful time on the filter UX. If no, the honest answer is Nova's native filters, and we should look at this package only as a reference design for a filter builder we'd own ourselves.
