Laravel Chatbot Laravel Package

halilcosdu/laravel-chatbot

Add AI-powered chatbots to any Laravel app with this package. It ships chat models, migrations, and a customizable UI, letting you create assistants backed by OpenAI and give users context-aware conversations grounded in your application's data.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for in-product conversational AI: v2.1.0 makes "adopt the package" a credible default over a bespoke integration. Managed streaming for both new and existing conversations (createThreadStreamed() / updateThreadStreamed()) covers the exact surface area most teams would otherwise hand-roll — thread lifecycle, streaming transport, and state ownership — so the build-vs-buy comparison now hinges on differentiation, not plumbing.
  • Roadmap sequencing for assistant features: Because the package now owns conversation state, stream state, and a package-isolated OpenAI client, PMs can schedule a streaming assistant MVP (support deflection, in-app copilot, onboarding helper) without first funding a platform team. That typically moves a chat capability from "next half" to "this quarter."
  • Per-request vs. global model configuration as a product lever: Per-request and global Responses API options (with package-managed input/conversation/stream state protected) let PMs ship tiered experiences — e.g., a cheap fast model for free-tier chat and a stronger model for paid tiers or high-value flows — without forking the codebase.
  • Cost and latency budgeting: The new effective 30-second default request timeout plus a configurable request_timeout and OPENAI_PROJECT attribution give PMs concrete knobs for unit economics and per-project spend visibility. Timeout defaults are a product decision disguised as a config value: they determine whether users see a spinner, a partial answer, or a graceful fallback.
  • Platform-scope decisions: With OPENAI_PROJECT and a package-isolated client, PMs can decide whether AI usage is a shared company-level spend line or charged back per product/project — a decision that usually precedes pricing and packaging work.
  • Use cases now genuinely in scope: customer support deflection bots, in-app assistants with persistent conversation history, internal knowledge/support tooling, and gated beta chat experiences where streaming responsiveness is part of the perceived quality bar.
  • Compatibility-driven planning: Laravel 13 and PHP 8.5 support means the package tracks the platform roadmap rather than blocking an upgrade. Conversely, Laravel 11 being framed as a legacy migration target is a forcing function for PMs whose products still run L11 — plan the upgrade or plan the exception.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • Your application is Laravel 12 or 13 on PHP 8.2–8.5. This is now the supported production path, and the release explicitly positions L11 as legacy after upstream security support ended in March 2026.
  • You need streaming chat with persisted conversation continuity — both new threads and follow-ups in an existing thread — and you want that state managed by the package rather than by your application code.
  • You are standardizing on OpenAI's Responses API and want a thin, Laravel-native integration rather than a provider-agnostic abstraction layer.
  • You want low integration cost and predictable ops: no new database migration in this release, config-driven setup, a documented upgrade path, and a test suite that grew from 17 to 40 tests (99 assertions) with streamed success, failure, early termination, and single-consumption coverage. For a PM, that test expansion is the strongest signal in these notes — streamed early-termination and single-consumption bugs are exactly the class of defect that reaches users as "the bot repeated itself" or "it hung."
  • You are a small-to-mid team without a dedicated AI platform group and want a dependency you can read, configure, and own.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need multi-provider support (Anthropic, Google, self-hosted) or provider failover. A package-isolated OpenAI client is a feature for simplicity and a liability for portability.
  • Your product depends on retrieval, embeddings, or tool-orchestration as first-class concerns beyond what the Responses API surface exposes — you will end up wrapping this in a second layer.
  • The stack is not Laravel, or is Laravel 11 with no near-term upgrade path, or runs PHP 8.5 on Laravel 11 (explicitly outside the supported matrix).
  • You require vendor SLA, indemnification, or audited compliance posture. This is a community package; the assessment above is about engineering fit, not procurement risk transfer.
  • Your scale or latency requirements demand custom streaming infrastructure, backpressure handling, or regional data residency that a library-level integration cannot express.
  • You need guaranteed API stability across major versions. Note that 2.1.0 requires a config change for existing installs (project, request_timeout cast, response_options); minor-version config edits are a reasonable cost here, but budget for them in your upgrade cadence.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): We can ship a streaming in-product assistant this quarter on top of an existing Laravel package instead of funding a custom build. The just-released v2.1.0 covers the expensive parts — conversation state, streaming, OpenAI connectivity, and per-request model selection — and adds meaningful reliability work (40 tests, up from 17, specifically targeting streamed failure and early-termination cases). It supports current Laravel and PHP versions, requires no database migration, and exposes cost and timeout controls we will need anyway. The main strategic caveat is that it is OpenAI-specific and community-maintained, so we are trading provider flexibility and procurement guarantees for speed and low maintenance cost.

For engineering leadership: Recommend adoption for Laravel 12/13 services that need OpenAI-backed streaming chat with persisted threads. The package now owns input, conversation, and stream state, which removes the most defect-prone code from our side. Upgrade cost is a config edit, not a migration. Two conditions to accept explicitly: (1) we are coupling to the Responses API and to a package-isolated OpenAI client, so a future multi-provider requirement is a re-architecture, not a config change; (2) Laravel 11 is a legacy target — any L11 service must have an upgrade ticket before we adopt there. Budget a short spike to validate streaming behavior under our real latency and error conditions before committing to a launch date.

Risks to state up front: single-maintainer dependency; no vendor SLA; provider lock-in at the client layer; and behavioral surprises are most likely at stream boundaries — which is precisely where the new test coverage is concentrated, so we should treat those tests as the acceptance criteria for our own integration work.
