H5P Editor Laravel Package

h5p/h5p-editor

A general PHP library for implementing the H5P editor in most PHP projects. It provides the editor assets and backend needed to create and modify H5P content, with SCSS sources and Compass build instructions for customizing styles.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit: h5p/h5p-editor is not a Laravel package. It is a lower-level PHP library intended to support H5P editor implementations across PHP frameworks. In a Laravel application it would sit beneath a custom adapter or community H5P integration package, alongside h5p/h5p-core and H5P content types. It is an authoring/editor dependency, not a complete content delivery or LMS feature. Laravel fit is therefore possible but requires deliberate glue: service provider, routes/controllers for editor AJAX endpoints, asset publishing, storage abstraction, auth middleware, and CSRF/path handling.

Integration feasibility: Composer installation is straightforward, but there is no Laravel auto-discovery, configuration, migrations, route registration, or documented Laravel contract. The README is minimal and focuses on SCSS compilation, so most integration knowledge must come from upstream H5P documentation or existing community adapters. The package has low stars and zero dependents, which is a weak adoption signal; it should be treated as a building block rather than a proven Laravel integration. MIT licensing is favorable.

Technical risk: Medium to high. Risks include version coupling with h5p/h5p-core and content types, PHP/Laravel compatibility gaps, asset-path and URL-generation issues, file-upload and storage-permission failures, CSRF/auth mismatches on H5P endpoints, and security review of third-party content types. The SCSS build requires Ruby and Compass unless compiled CSS is shipped or produced in a controlled build step. Documentation is thin, so upgrade and troubleshooting risk sits with the adopting team.

Key questions:

  • Which h5p/h5p-core and content-type versions are compatible with this editor library?
  • Are compiled CSS/JS assets included, or must the team maintain a Ruby/Compass build pipeline?
  • Which Laravel and PHP versions are supported in practice, not just theoretically?
  • How will editor endpoints be authenticated, authorized, and excluded from CSRF where required?
  • Where will H5P content, libraries, and temporary uploads be stored, and how will they be isolated per tenant?
  • Who owns the adapter layer and upstream upgrade monitoring?
  • What is the security and licensing posture of each content type to be enabled?

Integration Approach

Stack fit: The practical Laravel approach is to wrap h5p/h5p-editor in an internal adapter package or use an existing H5P Laravel integration as a reference. The adapter should register routes, publish editor assets, map H5P file operations to Laravel filesystem disks, apply middleware, and expose a stable configuration surface. Do not expect the library to behave like a typical Laravel package.

Migration path: Start with a non-production spike: install h5p/h5p-core and h5p/h5p-editor, build a minimal adapter, enable one content type, and validate the full create-edit-save-preview-embed flow. Once that works, harden auth, storage, asset delivery, and error handling before expanding content types or rolling out to users.

Compatibility: Pin Composer versions for the editor library, core library, and content types. Test against the target Laravel and PHP versions early. Confirm how assets are resolved under Laravel’s public directory or a CDN, and verify that H5P AJAX endpoints behave correctly behind Laravel routing, middleware, and proxies. Treat content-type compatibility as a separate matrix from framework compatibility.

Sequencing: Integrate core H5P services first, then the editor library, then the Laravel adapter, then storage/auth, then content types, then asset pipeline and automated tests. Avoid enabling many content types in parallel before the base editor flow is stable. A staged rollout with one authoring use case is safer than a broad “H5P support” launch.

Operational Impact

Maintenance: The package’s low release signal and minimal documentation mean the adopting team should expect to own more maintenance than with a mature Laravel package. Monitor upstream H5P changes, pin versions, and keep the adapter tested. If SCSS must be compiled, either automate Ruby/Compass in CI or commit vetted compiled assets to avoid environment drift.

Support: There is no commercial vendor relationship implied by this package. Support will be community/upstream plus internal expertise. A TPM should budget for H5P-specific knowledge rather than assuming normal Laravel package support patterns.

Scaling: The editor can load substantial JS/CSS and make multiple AJAX and upload requests. Serve static assets through a CDN or optimized web server, tune upload limits and storage paths, and define retention for temporary files. For multi-tenant use, isolate content and library storage per tenant and verify URL generation does not leak across tenants.

Failure modes: Common failures will be missing or mispathed assets, editor/core version mismatch, upload and filesystem permission errors, CSRF or auth rejection on H5P endpoints, broken content types, and uncompiled SCSS. These should be covered by smoke tests in CI and staging before release.

Ramp-up: Ramp-up is moderate to high. The team needs to understand the H5P library/content-type model, Laravel routing and storage integration, and the front-end asset pipeline. A short discovery spike is advisable before committing to a roadmap; the library is an enabling dependency, not a complete product capability.
