Ares Laravel Package

h4kuna/ares

h4kuna/ares is a PHP client for the Czech ARES business registry. Look up companies by IČO and retrieve structured details such as name, address, legal form, and registration data. Lightweight, framework-agnostic, and easy to integrate into Laravel or any PHP app.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Czech market localization / go-to-market: whether to support Czech B2B self-serve onboarding now, by making IČO (company ID) → legal name, address, and DIČ lookup a first-class input rather than a manual review step.
  • B2B signup and checkout UX: auto-fill company name, registered address, and VAT ID from a single field. Reduces form friction and typos, which is the main conversion leak in CZ B2B funnels.
  • Trust & fraud posture (lightweight): reject or flag registrations whose IČO doesn't resolve or is inactive. This is not KYC/AML — it's "does this entity exist and is the data internally consistent."
  • Invoice / legal compliance: Czech B2B invoices and many internal documents require counterparty identification data. Auto-populating from the registry reduces billing errors and support tickets.
  • Manual review capacity: each lookup removes a human verification step. This supports decisions like "can we onboard Czech sellers with 1 FTE in ops instead of 3?"
  • Build vs. buy for single-country integrations: the alternative is an in-house ARES client. At ~50 stars and zero dependents, this package is a cheap spike, not a foundation. The real decision it informs is how much of our company-registry layer should be an internal interface (CompanyRegistry::lookup($country, $id)) with this as one adapter.
  • Roadmap sequencing for registry coverage: CZ first (this), then SK/PL (ORSR, REGON/KRS), then EU-wide VAT validation (VIES), then paid KYB. Whether CZ is worth doing at all is the gating question — and this package makes the CZ answer testable in days, not sprints.
  • CRM/data hygiene: backfill and deduplicate B2B accounts by IČO; enrich with registry address and legal form.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • Your product serves Czech B2B users and needs company data keyed by IČO.
  • You're on Laravel/PHP, and the appeal is "a few lines of code instead of writing a SOAP/REST client and a response mapper."
  • Volume is low to moderate and lookups are cacheable — registry data changes rarely, so a day-old cached company record is usually fine.
  • You need read-only lookup only — not filings, not submissions, not registry mutations.
  • You're willing to own a thin wrapper: pin the version, add caching, timeouts, retries, a circuit breaker, and map its response objects into your own domain model. Treat it as an implementation detail behind an interface you control.
  • You need it now and can accept "no support contract, small community, one maintainer" as a known, bounded risk.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need more than Czech Republic — multi-country KYB, global entity resolution, parent/subsidiary structures. Buy a data vendor; don't chain country wrappers.
  • You need AML/KYC, sanctions/PEP screening, UBO discovery, or credit scoring/insolvency monitoring. ARES is a registry mirror, not a risk product. This package cannot support a compliance promise.
  • You need SLA, indemnification, or vendor support — 51 stars and 0 dependents means no ecosystem validation and no fallback if the maintainer stops.
  • You need financial statements, change webhooks, or historical filings — this is a lookup, not a monitoring feed.
  • Your usage is manual or very infrequent (a handful of lookups a month) — the ARES web UI or the official ARES REST API called directly is simpler than adding a dependency.
  • You're not on Laravel or your team cannot absorb an unmaintained dependency — vendor the few relevant classes or reimplement against the official API, which is the actual source of truth here anyway.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives (decision / value):

Czech B2B customers can't complete signup without typing their company details by hand, and our ops team verifies them manually. This package lets us replace that with a single IČO field that auto-fills legal name, address, and VAT ID from the official Czech registry — roughly a one-to-two-day integration, no vendor contract, no procurement. Expected impact: faster signup, fewer billing errors, and less manual review per account. It is a convenience and data-quality feature, not a compliance control — we should not market it as KYC. The risk is dependency hygiene: it's a small, single-maintainer open-source package, so we isolate it behind our own interface and can swap to the official ARES API or a paid provider without touching product code. Ask: approve a one-sprint spike with a go/no-go on shipping to production, not an open-ended adoption.

To engineering (implementation / risk):

Thin wrapper over the Czech ARES registry that returns typed company objects. Use it, don't depend on it: put it behind a CompanyRegistry interface, normalize into our own DTO, cache by IČO with a TTL measured in days, and add timeouts, retries, and graceful degradation — if ARES is down, onboarding must still complete with manual entry. Pin the exact version; there's no downstream ecosystem to catch a bad release. Keep the adapter ~100 lines so replacing it with the official REST API or a commercial KYB vendor is a contained change. Please also log lookup failures — those are our signal for whether the source is reliable enough to keep.

To customer support / ops:

One field replaces a form. When the lookup fails, the user falls back to manual entry — nothing blocks. Fewer "wrong VAT number on invoice" tickets, but expect questions about why the address differs from what the customer typed; registry data is authoritative for legal purposes, so we show it as pre-filled but editable.
