Laravel Telegram Logging Laravel Package

grkamil/laravel-telegram-logging

Send Laravel application logs straight to Telegram with this Monolog handler. Configure a bot token and chat ID, choose log levels, and receive instant error and warning notifications in your team chat—simple setup, no extra services.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Alerting strategy for MVP/small-surface products: decides whether "we find out something broke" comes from a full observability vendor (Sentry, Datadog, PagerDuty) or from a 30-minute composer require that routes Laravel's error/critical log channel into a team chat. This package makes the "cheap and now" option genuinely viable.
  • Build vs. buy for a commodity integration: a Telegram Monolog handler is ~50–150 lines of in-house code. This package represents a decision to not spend engineering time on that, at the cost of a single-maintainer dependency (161 stars, MIT). Reasonable trade for a non-differentiating capability; the decision should be recorded as "buy, and isolate behind a logging channel config so it can be swapped."
  • Roadmap sequencing of operational readiness: gives a concrete, low-cost line item for "we need to know when the scheduler fails / queue worker dies / checkout throws 500s" before investing in dashboards, SLOs, or on-call rotations. Useful as a bridge milestone between "no ops" and "real observability."
  • Which channel the team actually watches: choosing Telegram (vs. Slack/email) is a product/ops decision about where attention already lives. For teams, regions, or org cultures already on Telegram, this reduces alert fatigue-by-ignoring better than an email alias nobody reads.
  • Scope decisions on what gets alerted: forces an explicit policy — log level threshold, environment gating (staging vs. prod), rate limiting, and redaction. Deciding these is a PM-relevant artifact: it defines what counts as "page someone."
  • Use cases that pass the bar: internal tools and admin panels, cron/scheduled job failure notifications, low-traffic B2B/SaaS apps, side projects, staging smoke signals, webhook/payment callback errors, and low-volume audit-style "someone did X" notices.
  • Success metrics to instrument: alert delivery latency, alerts-per-day (volume creep), false-positive rate, and MTTR on the first three incidents after adoption. If MTTR doesn't improve, the decision was cosmetic.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when most of these hold:

  • Laravel/PHP stack, already using (or willing to use) Laravel's logging channels — no custom plumbing required.
  • Small team (roughly 1–15 engineers) with no existing alerting or only "check the dashboard when someone complains."
  • Low-to-moderate log volume: tens to low hundreds of error events per day, not thousands per minute.
  • Team already lives in Telegram; alerts land where people will see them.
  • Log payloads are non-sensitive or can be reliably scrubbed (tokens, passwords, PII, customer data, request bodies).
  • You need it this sprint, and a one-day build-vs-buy analysis isn't worth the calendar time.

Look elsewhere (or build a thin in-house handler) when:

  • Compliance or data residency matters — regulated PII/PHI/PCI, or anything where shipping logs to a third-party messenger is a policy violation. No amount of convenience justifies the egress.
  • Volume or retention matters — Telegram is a notification surface, not a log store. No search, no structured query, no retention policy, no audit trail, and it is subject to bot rate limits (~20–30 messages/minute per chat) that will silently drop or throttle bursts. Pair with (or replace by) a real sink.
  • You need routing, escalation, acknowledgement, or on-call schedules — PagerDuty/Opsgenie/Grafana OnCall territory.
  • Single-maintainer risk is unacceptable for the critical path — pin the version, wrap it, and have a fallback channel ready.
  • Corporate networks block Telegram, or the org's sanctioned chat is Slack/Teams — the right answer is a channel you already run, not a second messenger.
  • You already own Datadog/Sentry/CloudWatch — adding a second, unsearchable alerting surface increases noise and splits the source of truth.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives (one paragraph): We currently have no reliable way to learn that production is broken until a customer tells us. This package lets us pipe Laravel error and critical logs into our team's Telegram chat for roughly an afternoon of work and near-zero ongoing cost — no vendor contract, no new platform, MIT-licensed. It's a deliberate tactical step: it buys us faster incident detection now, while we defer an observability platform decision until traffic and team size justify the spend. The main constraint is that it's a notification channel, not a logging system — it doesn't retain, search, or audit logs, and we should keep sensitive data out of it. I'd recommend approving it as a stopgap with a review in one quarter.

To engineering (the ask): Add the package, define a dedicated telegram logging channel, and gate it to error+ in production and debug+ in staging. Non-negotiables: redact secrets/PII before the handler, set a level threshold and a rate cap so a crash loop doesn't spam the chat into uselessness, keep the bot token in secrets management (not .env in the repo), and isolate the integration behind the logging.channels config so we can swap the destination later without touching call sites. Track alert volume and false positives for the first month — if the channel becomes noise, we tune or retire it rather than letting people mute it.
