Backblaze B2 Laravel Package

gliterd/backblaze-b2

Laravel package that integrates Backblaze B2 cloud storage with the framework's filesystem, so you can upload, store, and serve files through a familiar driver interface with simple configuration and the official B2 SDK.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Storage cost reduction as a roadmap initiative. Backblaze B2 lists at roughly $6/TB/month versus ~$23/TB/month for S3 Standard. If object storage is a visible line item (user uploads, media libraries, backups, logs, exports), this package is the cheapest way to test a B2 migration inside an existing Laravel codebase without a rewrite.
  • Feature scoping for file/media handling. It exposes the B2 primitives PMs actually need to spec: bucket creation, file upload (including large-file/multipart), download by ID or name, versioning, deletion, and file metadata. Useful for sizing a "customer document uploads" or "video asset library" epic before committing engineering time.
  • Build vs. buy on the storage abstraction layer. The decision isn't "B2 or not" — it's "raw B2 HTTP calls, this SDK, or the S3-compatible path." This package represents the native API option: it wraps B2's proprietary REST API rather than the S3-compatible surface B2 now offers. That distinction should be an explicit line in the design doc.
  • Backup/DR and vendor-redundancy decisions. Because B2 is cheap, a second copy of critical data (or a cross-provider backup target) becomes financially defensible. This SDK enables a "write to primary storage, replicate to B2" spike in days rather than a sprint.
  • Archival and retention tiering. Cold data (closed accounts, old invoices, audit logs, generated reports) can be moved off hot storage. Good input to a retention-policy decision and to pricing/packaging conversations if you're passing storage cost to customers.
  • Not a good basis for: a customer-facing storage platform, anything needing active maintenance guarantees, or a long-lived architectural bet. See risk note below.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You have an existing Laravel app already on PHP 7.x and Laravel 5.x–6.x, where the dependency graph won't fight a 2019-era package.
  • You've already chosen B2 on cost grounds and want a thin, native-API wrapper rather than pulling in the full AWS SDK.
  • The need is narrow and non-critical: backup dumps, log shipping, media offload — things that can tolerate a stale wrapper and where you'd write your own fallback if it breaks.
  • You want to prototype B2's economics and latency before making a real commitment. Timebox it.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Greenfield project or Laravel 9/10/11. This package's last release is January 2019; treat it as unmaintained. Use league/flysystem-aws-s3-v3 pointed at B2's S3-compatible endpoint, or Backblaze's own current SDK. You get maintenance, multipart handling, and streaming for free.
  • You need security patching or a support path. Single-maintainer, 81 stars, no recent releases. That's a supply-chain and bus-factor risk you should not accept for anything on the critical path.
  • You depend on native-B2-only features that the S3 compatibility layer doesn't cover (application-key scoping quirks, certain lifecycle/notification behaviors) and you need them maintained — in which case write and own a small internal client instead of adopting this one.
  • Large-file or high-throughput workloads. Multipart reliability, retries, and streaming semantics in a 2019 wrapper are unproven at scale. Benchmark before you commit, or go straight to a maintained client.
  • Your team can't absorb an unsupported dependency. If nobody owns this code, don't take it on.

Recommended posture: evaluate, don't adopt. Use it to price out and demo a B2 migration; ship production on a maintained S3-compatible client unless the spike proves native-API access is genuinely required.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (30 seconds): Object storage is one of the few infrastructure costs that scales linearly with growth. Backblaze B2 is roughly a quarter the per-terabyte price of S3, and this small open-source library lets our existing Laravel app talk to it without a re-architecture. It's the cheapest possible experiment: we can run a two-week spike to validate cost savings and performance on a real workload before committing anything to the roadmap.

For engineering (60 seconds): gliterd/backblaze-b2 is a thin native-API wrapper for B2 — buckets, uploads (including multipart), downloads, versioning, deletes. MIT-licensed, no vendor lock-in on the code. The catch: last release was January 2019, ~80 stars, effectively unmaintained, and built for the Laravel 5/6 era. So we treat it as a reference implementation and spike tool, not a production dependency. Production path should be Flysystem's S3 adapter against B2's S3-compatible endpoint, which we already know how to operate. Ask: is native-API access worth owning a fork? Default answer is no.

Framing the risk honestly: the package's value is in proving the economics fast, not in being a durable component. Position the decision as "two-week evaluation with a defined exit" — if the savings don't materialize or the client proves flaky, we've spent days, not a quarter.
