Relations Laravel Package

ghanuz/relations

A Laravel package for working with Eloquent model relationships, providing helpers to define, query, and manage related records more cleanly. Simplify complex relations and keep your models concise and readable.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy vs. fork for a narrow data-access need. The package solves one specific problem: querying Eloquent relationships where the "foreign key" side is stored as a comma-separated string, a serialized PHP array, or a JSON column instead of a normalized pivot table. That is a schema-compatibility concern, not a product capability — so the real decision it informs is "do we normalize the data, write a small custom relation class, or take a dependency?"
  • Roadmap sequencing on legacy schemas. If a customer-facing feature (filtering, search, admin reporting, related-content blocks) is blocked only because the underlying data is denormalized, this package is a way to ship the feature now and defer the migration. That's a schedule trade: weeks of feature work vs. a multi-sprint data migration with backfill and dual-write risk.
  • Technical-debt triage and cost quantification. Adopting it is an explicit acknowledgment that denormalized columns are being treated as a supported interface. That should be recorded as debt with an owner, a normalization target, and a removal date — otherwise the compatibility layer quietly becomes permanent architecture.
  • Third-party and integration ingestion. Common real trigger: an external system (ERP, marketplace, legacy CMS, CSV import) hands you list-of-IDs in a single field. The package lets you model that as a relationship without reshaping the inbound contract.
  • E-commerce/CMS use cases specifically. Product-to-category, tag-to-content, and attribute-list fields are the archetypal shapes here — useful for catalog filtering and merchandising features where the data source is outside your control.
  • What it does not decide. It is not a reason to keep denormalized data. It should never be cited as justification for new schemas storing ID lists in JSON or CSV — native pivot tables and Laravel's native JSON query support handle greenfield work correctly and indexably.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following hold:

  • You have an existing, hard-to-change schema where list-valued foreign keys are already persisted as CSV, serialized arrays, or JSON, and normalizing it is genuinely out of scope for the current quarter.
  • The relationship is read-mostly and low-cardinality — related-content blocks, tags, small category sets — not high-volume join paths.
  • You are on a Laravel version contemporary with the package (it last shipped in September 2020, so assume Laravel 6/7-era semantics) or you are willing to verify compatibility yourself.
  • You accept the maintenance posture: 6 stars, zero dependents, no release in years. Realistically you are adopting source code to fork and own, not a maintained dependency.

Look elsewhere — or write ~100 lines of custom Relation subclass yourself — when:

  • You are on Laravel 8+. whereJsonContains, JSON path queries, and whereIn against JSON columns cover most of the JSON case natively. For many-to-many, a proper pivot table is strictly better.
  • Performance matters. Parsing comma-separated or serialized fields happens in PHP per row; expect full scans, no usable indexes on the join, and eager-loading that degrades badly at scale. If the dataset is more than a few thousand rows, this is the wrong tool.
  • Eager loading / with() correctness is a requirement. Verify this before committing; a relationship that can't batch-load will produce N+1 queries in list views.
  • Your organization requires a maintained, security-reviewed dependency. An unmaintained package with no dependents will fail most procurement or SCA gates, and there's no upstream to patch a vulnerability.
  • You need writes. The package fetches relationship data; it does not give you referential integrity, cascading updates, or safe mutation of the ID lists. If your feature writes to these relationships, you need normalization first.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, tactical utility that lets us deliver a feature on top of legacy data without first funding a schema migration. It unblocks revenue-facing work at low cost, but it is explicitly a stopgap — it does not fix the underlying data model, and we should expect to retire it when we normalize. Treat it as a fork-and-own piece of code rather than a strategic dependency; the project is effectively unmaintained (last release 2020, minimal adoption), so the real commitment is a few days of engineering ownership, not a vendor relationship.

To engineering: It maps Eloquent relationships onto denormalized CSV, array, and JSON columns. It's a thin, narrow-surface library — assume you're vendoring the relation classes into our codebase and owning them, because upstream is dormant. Before adopting, validate three things: compatibility with our Laravel version, whether eager loading batches correctly or degrades to N+1, and whether the query patterns can use any index at all. If any of those fail, writing our own relation class is cheaper than the integration risk.

Recommendation: Approve for legacy-read scenarios with a named owner and a removal condition tied to schema normalization. Do not approve as a pattern for new features, and do not let it appear in an architecture diagram without a deprecation note.
