Filament Utc Dts Laravel Package

gerenuk/filament-utc-dts

A Filament package for UTC date-times that stores timestamps in UTC while displaying them in the user’s local timezone. Includes form fields and table columns to keep date/time handling consistent across Laravel admin panels.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin UX / operational clarity for distributed teams. The package is a micro-affordance: a UTC indicator in the Filament panel chrome, so operators reading logs, audit trails, cron schedules, and publishing timestamps don't have to mentally convert. The product decision it informs is whether our admin surface makes "which timezone am I looking at?" a guessing game.
  • Incident response and support load. Every "was that 14:00 UTC or local?" question in a support thread or post-mortem is a symptom. This is a cheap way to test whether a persistent UTC reference measurably reduces timestamp misreads and mis-scheduled jobs.
  • Roadmap: stopgap vs. real timezone strategy. A UTC badge is not timezone support. It supports the decision of whether to ship a fast cosmetic fix now and defer per-user timezone preferences, dual-clock display (local + UTC side by side), and per-column timezone labelling to a later cycle. Frame it explicitly as a stopgap so it doesn't get mistaken for a solved problem.
  • Build vs. buy (and the honest answer is "build-ish"). The capability is a render hook plus a small Livewire/Blade component — an afternoon of work. The decision is therefore not "which vendor" but "do we add an always-visible clock to admin chrome at all, and do we accept a third-party dependency for it?" The package's real value is speed of validation, not long-term leverage.
  • Use cases where it earns its place: ops/scheduler monitoring dashboards, audit-log review, multi-region support and on-call rotations, scheduled publishing, and any product where the database stores UTC but the UI renders local time without labels.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You run a Filament panel (verify the major version matches — this is the first thing to confirm, given a small, young package) and your operators or support staff span more than one timezone.
  • Your application stores UTC but the admin UI displays local or ambiguous times, and timezone misreads have real cost (missed jobs, wrong SLA reads, audit disputes).
  • You want to validate the value of a UTC reference cheaply before investing in a proper timezone-aware admin layer.
  • You're comfortable with the risk profile: MIT licensed, single-purpose, tiny surface area, trivially vendorable or forkable. Low blast radius if it's abandoned.

Look elsewhere or build it yourself when:

  • You need actual timezone conversion. This is an indicator, not a conversion or scheduling layer. Per-user timezone preferences, DST-safe rendering, and labelled date columns are a different (larger) piece of work.
  • Your team already operates in one timezone, or every timestamp in the UI is already explicitly labelled. Then it's decoration.
  • Dependency hygiene matters more than speed. Five stars, zero dependents, and a single maintainer is a bus-factor of one. For a feature this small, vendoring the component into your own codebase is usually the better call — you get the UX without the supply-chain and upgrade-coupling cost.
  • You're not on Filament, or you're pinned to a version this hasn't been validated against. Compatibility with your Filament major is a gating check, not a footnote.
  • You'd be treating it as a roadmap item. It isn't one. If stakeholders start citing this as "timezone support," that's a scoping error to correct early.

PM next step before adoption: time-box a one-hour spike — confirm Filament version compatibility, confirm the indicator renders sensibly in your panel's layout and doesn't clutter the topbar, and decide build-vs-vendor on that basis. Default recommendation: vendor the small component; adopt the package only if you want the upstream to carry maintenance.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, low-cost UX fix for our admin panel — an always-visible UTC reference so staff working across timezones stop misreading server, audit, and schedule timestamps. The cost is negligible (MIT licensed, no meaningful integration effort) and the failure mode is equally negligible: worst case we remove a badge. It is not our timezone strategy and should not be presented as one — it's operational hygiene that buys us time while we decide whether per-user timezone handling is worth building. Recommend approving as a low-risk experiment with a simple success measure: fewer "what timezone is this?" questions in support and incident threads.

For engineering: A Filament render hook that surfaces current UTC in the panel. MIT, single-purpose, minimal footprint. Two caveats to validate before we depend on it: (1) confirm compatibility with our Filament major version, and (2) note the project is young — five stars, zero dependents, one maintainer — so the sensible path is to vendor the component into our own codebase rather than take a hard dependency, unless you'd rather upstream carry it. Either way, keep it cosmetic and isolated: no business logic should depend on it, and the UI must degrade gracefully if it's removed. If we later want per-user timezone preferences or dual-clock display, that's a separate piece of work and should be scoped on its own merits.
