Nova Telescope Laravel Package

genealabs/nova-telescope

Brings Laravel Telescope into Laravel Nova, letting you browse requests, exceptions, queries, logs, and other Telescope entries directly from your Nova dashboard. Adds a convenient monitoring tool so you can inspect and debug application activity without leaving the admin panel.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Whether "debugging visibility" is a real internal user need or an engineering assumption. The package's only differentiated value is moving Telescope's request/exception/log/query data into the Nova panel that support, QA, and ops already use. That makes it a cheap way to test a hypothesis — "do non-engineers actually open this, and does it cut escalation round-trips?" — before anyone commits to building a custom Nova tool. Instrument the tool, run it for a month, and let usage data decide whether the capability deserves a permanent owner.
  • Admin surface consolidation vs. proliferation. Every internal tool is another login, another access grant, another place data can leak. Folding Telescope behind Nova's existing auth is a small but genuine reduction in surface area — provided the authorization model is proven equivalent, not assumed. That "provided" is the PM's call, not the engineer's.
  • Build vs. buy (really: adopt vs. build). The honest comparison is not free-package vs. paid-vendor. It is an archived, unmaintained wrapper with 16 stars and zero dependents versus a Nova nav link to /telescope (hours) or a thin in-house tool (~1–3 engineer-days). Once the package is archived, "buy" is off the table and the decision collapses into build-vs-fork.
  • Production observability posture. The unlock-or-kill question: does Telescope run anywhere besides local? If local-only, this is a developer convenience with no organizational leverage and no roadmap claim. If staging or gated production, it becomes a governance decision — request payloads, headers, cookies, session IDs, and SQL bindings are now visible to whoever holds a Nova login.
  • Data-exposure policy ownership. Nova's tool-level authorization determines who sees raw request data. Someone has to write that policy down. That someone is the PM, and it should be settled before install, not after an incident.
  • Roadmap sequencing: it earns no slot. Treat as a tooling line item with an explicit deprecation horizon, not as a capability investment.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following hold:

  • Nova is already licensed and is the system of record for internal admin work — the package's entire value is the Nova chrome; without Nova there is nothing to adopt.
  • Telescope is already installed and actually used; this package adds a UI, not a capability.
  • The intended audience includes people who will not open a terminal — support, QA, operations.
  • You are on Laravel 10/11 (per the 11.0 release) and are prepared to pin the version and accept that there is no upstream to patch it.
  • You are treating it as a time-boxed experiment whose success criterion is measured usage, with a pre-agreed exit to a nav link or in-house tool.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not on Nova, or Nova is not where internal staff actually live.
  • You need supported dependencies. Archived in Nov 2024, 16 stars, zero dependents, no vendor, no issue queue worth filing against. There is no upgrade path past its final compatibility window.
  • You need real observability — alerting, SLOs, retention policy, cross-service traces. Telescope is a debugging tool; Laravel Pulse, Nightwatch, or Sentry/OpenTelemetry cover that ground.
  • The need is transient. Telescope's own UI, Horizon's dashboard, Debugbar, Ray, or tail may cover the daily workflow at lower long-term cost.
  • The next Nova major is on your horizon. An archived tool will almost certainly break there with zero upstream remedy.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

  • Executives: A free add-on that surfaces existing debugging data inside the admin panel we already pay for, so support can diagnose issues without pulling an engineer. No license cost, no customer-facing change, no revenue impact. The caveat is that it is archived and unsupported — adopting it means accepting a small future maintenance or replacement obligation. Fund it as a bounded tooling experiment with a named owner and a decision date, not as an infrastructure commitment.
  • Engineering: Mechanically trivial — composer require, register the tool in NovaServiceProvider::tools(), publish assets. Two things must be settled before rollout: (1) confirm whether the tool inherits Telescope's authorization gate or relies solely on Nova's, and prove the two cannot diverge; (2) verify Telescope's pruning, sampling, and production-enablement settings so the wrapper doesn't quietly widen exposure of payloads, headers, and query bindings. Pin the version and read composer.json directly for the real Nova/Telescope/PHP constraints rather than trusting changelog prose. Plan a fork or removal at the next Nova major — there is no maintainer to patch it.
  • Product: No user-facing impact, no roadmap position, no differentiator. Position it, if at all, as a debugging-speed improvement for internal teams — and never as a reason to adopt Nova or Telescope in the first place. The defensible alternatives are a Nova nav link to /telescope or a thin in-house tool; both cost little more and remove the ownership question entirely.
