fuzzyma/contao-database-commands-bundle
A Contao bundle that adds useful Symfony console commands for database management, helping you handle common database tasks more conveniently from the command line.
symfony/console v4 allowed, to cover Contao 4.6). It adds no command, flag, config option, or bug fix. A constraint-widening patch after a years-long gap is a caretaker gesture, not a revival: it tells us someone needed Contao 4.6 to install cleanly, not that the project has a maintainer roadmap. Treat "the community solution never consolidated" as still true — Contao shipped the equivalent commands upstream.Adopt only when all of the following hold:
contao:migrate / installation-bundle commands. As of 0.2.4 the package explicitly declares support for the Contao 4.6 / symfony/console v4 combination, so that specific era is now the best-supported target rather than an untested one.Look elsewhere (or build internally) when:
symfony/console v4 moves the ceiling to roughly the Symfony 4.4 / PHP 7.4 line; it does not deliver PHP 8 support, and a low-activity package gives no compatibility guarantees for future Symfony/Doctrine constraints.Executives: Small, single-purpose tooling bundle that automates two manual Contao operations — database updates and admin account creation. It is MIT-licensed and trivially small, so the technical risk is low; the business risk is abandonment. The 0.2.4 release is a single-line Composer constraint change to permit symfony/console v4 for Contao 4.6 — it is the first sign of activity after a long quiet period, but it is maintenance hygiene, not investment: no new functionality, no PHP 8 support, no downstream consumers. Recommendation unchanged: do not adopt as a dependency. Budget roughly half a day of engineering to implement the same two commands internally against Contao's supported APIs, which removes a stale third-party dependency from our supply chain and unblocks our own PHP upgrade path.
Engineering: The value is the pattern, not the code — move contao:migrate and admin seeding into CI, gate deploys on migration success, and never hand-create admin users in shared environments. Copy the idea, drop the package; keep the two commands in-repo where they can be versioned against our Contao release and reviewed by security. On 0.2.4 specifically: it relaxes the symfony/console constraint to include v4 so Contao 4.6 installs resolve. That is useful only if we are pinned to 4.6 and blocked on dependency resolution — in which case pin 0.2.4 explicitly, do not float. It does not fix PHP 8 compatibility, does not add features, and does not make the package a candidate for production credential handling. Also note the framing error in the intake ticket: this is a Contao/Symfony bundle, not a Laravel package, so it should be re-routed to the CMS tooling backlog.
