Datasource Bundle Laravel Package

fsi/datasource-bundle

FSi Datasource Bundle integrates the FSi DataSource component with Symfony, providing a reusable abstraction for paginated, filterable, and sortable listings backed by Doctrine or custom sources. Ideal for admin grids, search results, and API collections.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for "configurable data blocks": This bundle sits on top of the FSi DataSource Component, giving you a registered service plus Twig functions to render data-driven blocks (datasource_render, etc.). That directly supports the decision of whether to hand-roll a widget/data-block abstraction for an admin or CMS surface, or adopt an existing one. For a team already on Symfony + Twig + FSi Admin Bundle, it removes a small but real amount of plumbing.
  • Feature scoping for editor-driven pages: If your roadmap includes letting non-developers compose pages from data-backed blocks (product lists, feeds, recent content, API-sourced cards), this is evidence that the pattern is well-understood and cheap to implement — the decision becomes "which abstraction," not "is this feasible."
  • Architecture decision: decouple data retrieval from presentation. The DataSource pattern pushes a source-agnostic interface (Doctrine, array, remote API) behind a uniform render contract. That supports a roadmap decision to keep Twig templates ignorant of where data comes from — valuable if you expect data sources to churn (swap a Doctrine query for an API call without touching templates).
  • Roadmap risk triage: 5 stars, 0 dependents, last release September 2021. This is a signal, not a feature — it tells you the ecosystem has not consolidated around this bundle, so any roadmap item that depends on it carries unowned maintenance risk.
  • Use cases it genuinely fits: Symfony admin panels, internal dashboards, CMS-lite back offices, Twig-rendered report/widget surfaces, and any place where a small agency-standard bundle (FSi Open's family: admin, form, datasource) is already in the stack.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following hold:

  • You are on Symfony (not Laravel — this is a bundle with a DI extension and Twig functions; the "Laravel/PHP" framing is misleading and should be corrected before any evaluation proceeds).
  • Your rendering layer is Twig and will stay Twig.
  • You already use, or plan to use, the FSi Open bundle family — the value here is largely integration glue, and that glue is only worth it inside that ecosystem.
  • You need a small, single-purpose abstraction for rendering configurable data blocks and are comfortable pinning a version.
  • You can vendor or fork it: MIT license means forking is legally trivial, which is the realistic mitigation for the staleness.

Look elsewhere (or build in-house) when:

  • You are on Laravel. Nothing here applies; the equivalent decision is a Blade view-composer / repository-pattern layer, or a livewire/filament widget abstraction.
  • You need active maintenance, security response, or a support contract. Last release 2021-09-02 with 0 dependents means no upstream pressure to fix anything, including PHP/Symfony version drift.
  • You need broad community validation. 5 stars is not a community; there is no Stack Overflow corpus, no third-party tutorials, no hiring pool that knows it.
  • Your data-layer needs are non-trivial (caching strategy, pagination at scale, auth-scoped sources, async). At that point the abstraction is cheap to write and expensive to inherit.
  • You are pre-Series-A and optimizing for hiring and onboarding — every bespoke dependency is a tax on every future engineer.

Net PM read: treat this as a reference implementation to read, not a dependency to adopt. Budget a half-day spike, extract the pattern, and write ~150 lines of your own if the pattern earns its keep.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A small open-source Symfony add-on that lets templates render data-driven blocks without hardcoding where the data comes from. It is MIT-licensed and free, and it validates a pattern we may want for editor-composable pages. It is not a strategic dependency: the project has effectively no community (5 stars, 0 downstream users, no release since 2021), so I recommend we borrow the pattern, not the package — near-zero cost, and it avoids inheriting an unmaintained component into our build.

To engineering: This is a thin Symfony bundle registering the FSi DataSource Component service plus Twig rendering functions. It only makes sense if we are already in the FSi bundle family on Symfony/Twig; it is irrelevant to our Laravel surfaces. Given zero dependents and a two-plus-year release gap, adopting it means we own it. Proposal: one spike to review the abstraction, then an in-house implementation sized at roughly a day, with the DataSource interface shape as the only thing we carry over. Decision requested: approve the spike, decline the dependency.
