Admin Bundle Laravel Package

fsi/admin-bundle

FSi Admin Bundle is a Symfony bundle for building extensible admin panels. It offers CRUD screens, data grids, filtering, sorting, and configurable actions for Doctrine-backed entities, reducing boilerplate for PHP teams managing application data.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for back-office tooling. This package is a Symfony admin generator — it scaffolds list, filter, form, and CRUD screens over Doctrine entities. The decision it informs is whether internal tooling gets hand-built per project or standardized on a generator, which is usually a 3–10x difference in engineering hours per admin screen.
  • Roadmap sequencing for internal/ops features. Every roadmap has non-differentiating work (support dashboards, data correction screens, moderation queues, catalog administration). Adopting a generator lets you schedule those as days rather than sprints, freeing capacity for customer-facing work.
  • Scope negotiation on "we need an admin panel" requests. Instead of a bespoke spec, you can commit to a bounded deliverable: entity configuration + field/filter mapping, with a known ceiling on customization.
  • Stack standardization. If the org is already on Symfony + Doctrine, this reinforces the existing stack rather than introducing a second back-office framework or a separate SPA admin surface.
  • Buy-in cost. MIT license, no per-seat or per-app fee — the decision is purely engineering time and maintenance ownership, not procurement.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The codebase is Symfony with Doctrine ORM entities — this is the load-bearing constraint; the package is not Laravel and does not port.
  • You need many similar CRUD screens over existing models, and the value is speed of generation rather than bespoke UX.
  • Your team is comfortable reading and overriding bundle config and extending base classes; admin generators are opinionated by nature, and the real cost is in the overrides.
  • You are willing to own the code. With ~57 stars and effectively no downstream dependents, this is not a package you adopt and forget — budget for pinning versions and being able to fork.
  • Internal users, not customers, are the audience. Admin generators optimize for function over polish.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are on Laravel or any non-Symfony framework — the answer is a different package entirely (Nova, Filament, Backpack), and this evaluation should be re-run against those.
  • A modern, actively supported admin is a requirement. Low adoption is the main signal here: thin community means fewer answers when you hit an edge case, and higher bus-factor risk if the maintainer steps away. Compare against EasyAdmin or SonataAdmin for ecosystem depth before committing.
  • The admin surface is customer-facing or design-system-governed. Generated CRUD UI will not meet accessibility, branding, or interaction-design standards without substantial rework.
  • You need a decoupled/API-first admin. This generates server-rendered Symfony screens, not an API for a custom front end.
  • Volume is low. One or two admin screens do not justify a framework dependency; hand-build them.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is an off-the-shelf, MIT-licensed admin generator for our Symfony applications. It converts recurring back-office work — support dashboards, data correction, moderation — from custom builds into configuration, which compresses those items off the critical path and reduces the ongoing cost of internal tooling. Cost is engineering time only; there is no license or vendor commitment. The tradeoff is that the project has a small community, so we should treat it as code we own and maintain rather than a supported product, and timebox a spike to validate it against one real entity before standardizing.

To engineering: Symfony/Doctrine-native admin scaffolding — define entity configs and get list, filter, and form screens with extension points for custom fields and actions. Adopt it as a dependency with a pinned version and a documented override pattern; keep the customization surface small so we retain the option to swap it out. It has no dependent packages today, so assume we may need to carry a fork — that is an acceptable cost only if we keep our integration thin.
