Honeywell Client Laravel Package

fruitcake/honeywell-client

A PHP client for the Honeywell API, offering a simple, framework-friendly way to authenticate and interact with Honeywell devices and data. Wraps Honeywell endpoints in clean, testable classes so Laravel apps can query and manage connected systems without handling raw HTTP requests.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • The package is a thin PHP client (Guzzle-backed) wrapping Honeywell's cloud endpoints for T-series thermostats (T5/T6/T9/T10), shipped with a Laravel service provider and facade. That matches the typical shape of a Laravel integration: composer require, publish config, bind credentials, inject the client.
  • Domain fit is narrow but well-defined: read thermostat state (temperature, setpoint, mode, fan, schedule/hold status) and issue write commands (setpoint, mode, hold). That is sufficient for an energy-management dashboard, facilities/office HVAC monitoring, or a property-management SaaS vertical.
  • The package will not carry business logic. Expect to own the adapter boundary (a ThermostatClient contract) so the underlying transport can be swapped without touching controllers, jobs, or UI code.

Integration feasibility

  • Low engineering effort to wire up; high effort to prove it still works. The last release is 2022-10-03, the package has 1 star and 0 dependents, and the upstream maintainer is a single individual. Treat it as a reference implementation, not a supported dependency.
  • The critical feasibility question is not the PHP code — that is small and readable — but the auth and endpoint surface it targets. It most likely speaks to the legacy Total Connect Comfort (TCC) session-cookie API rather than the official Resideo/Honeywell Home developer API with OAuth 2.0. If true, we are depending on a private, undocumented interface with no stated contract, no versioning, and no SLA. That is a Terms-of-Service and stability problem, not a technical one.
  • Confirming this requires a real device and a real account; there is no way to validate from the repository alone.

Technical risk

  • High — upstream abandonment. Unmaintained for ~3 years, effectively zero community. Any breakage is ours to fix.
  • High — API drift / deprecation. Consumer thermostat cloud APIs in this family have been migrated and regionalized. If TCC is retired for our target markets, the package fails at the transport layer with no migration path baked in.
  • Medium — framework compatibility. Composer/Guzzle constraints were pinned in the Laravel 8/9 era. Laravel 10/11 with PHP 8.2/8.3 will likely require a fork or constraint overrides.
  • Medium — credential handling. Username/password storage for end-user Honeywell accounts means we own a sensitive secret with physical-world effect (HVAC actuation). Vaulting, per-tenant isolation, and audit logging are mandatory, not optional.
  • Low — code complexity. The surface area is small enough to audit fully in a day.

Key questions

  1. Which Honeywell API does the target thermostat fleet actually expose — legacy TCC or the Resideo/Honeywell Home developer API — and in which regions?
  2. Do we have (or can we obtain) an official developer account and app credentials, which would let us bypass this package entirely?
  3. What is the acceptable control latency and what happens on a missed command — is this monitoring/insight only, or closed-loop HVAC control?
  4. Has legal reviewed the ToS for programmatic access via consumer account credentials?
  5. Is there a hard commitment to Honeywell T-series hardware, or is this one driver among several (Nest, Ecobee, generic Z-Wave)?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Targets Laravel with Guzzle. Acceptable fit for a Laravel monolith or a small integration service. It is not a good fit for a multi-tenant SaaS as shipped — the credential model appears to be one account per client instance.

Migration path

  • Do not integrate the package directly into controllers. Define an internal ThermostatProvider interface (read state, write setpoint, write mode, health check) and implement it once with this package behind a feature flag.
  • Run a 1–2 week spike with real hardware to answer the API question above. If the legacy endpoint is alive: fork the package, pin it internally, and treat it as owned code. If it is dead: skip the fork and build the adapter directly against the official Resideo API — the interface work is unchanged, so the spike is not wasted.

Compatibility

  • Pin PHP and Guzzle explicitly; expect to relax or fork constraints for Laravel 10/11. Run the full test suite on the target matrix before any production exposure.
  • Validate error handling: legacy cloud APIs frequently return HTTP 200 with an error payload. Any wrapper must parse the body, not just the status code.

Sequencing

  1. Legal/ToS and API-access check (blocking).
  2. Hardware spike against a single thermostat; capture request/response shapes.
  3. Build the adapter interface and a fake implementation for tests.
  4. Wrap the package (or official API) behind the adapter.
  5. Move polling and writes into queued jobs with idempotency keys and retry/backoff.
  6. Add observability: per-call latency, auth-failure rate, command-ack rate.
  7. Only then expose to end users, behind a flag and a single pilot tenant.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Assume ownership from day one. Budget roughly 0.1–0.2 FTE for dependency upkeep, plus unbounded unplanned work if the upstream API changes. A private fork is the realistic steady state; do not plan on upstream PRs landing.

Support

  • No vendor support channel exists for this package. If we stay on the legacy consumer API, Honeywell/Resideo support will not assist with programmatic access. Escalation is entirely internal.

Scaling

  • Session-cookie auth per Honeywell account is the scaling constraint. Expect undocumented rate limits and possible throttling or account lockout under aggressive polling. Design for push-or-long-poll where available, otherwise a coalesced poller (e.g., 5-minute cadence with caching) rather than per-request calls.
  • Multi-tenant deployments need a credential vault keyed per tenant plus per-tenant rate budgets. This is the largest hidden cost in the integration.

Failure modes

  • Silent session expiry returning stale state — mitigate with freshness timestamps surfaced in the UI.
  • Schema drift in undocumented responses — mitigate with lenient parsing and alerting on unexpected fields.
  • Credential rotation or MFA enrollment on the end-user account breaking the integration — mitigate with a re-auth flow and a clear "connection lost" state.
  • Command accepted but not applied by the device — mitigate with read-after-write verification and a divergence alert.
  • Safety: clamp setpoints server-side and reject out-of-range values before they reach hardware. An HVAC miscommand is a real-world incident, not just a bug.

Ramp-up

  • Low for any Laravel engineer: the code is a few hundred lines over Guzzle. The real ramp-up is domain knowledge — setpoint vs. ambient, hold semantics, schedule overrides, deadband, and regional API differences — plus the operational discipline of owning an unsupported dependency. Plan one engineer as the named owner with a documented runbook before go-live.
