Slim Monolog Laravel Package

flynsarmy/slim-monolog

Monolog integration for the Slim PHP framework. Add PSR-3 logging to your Slim app with minimal setup, route messages through Monolog handlers, and get configurable, structured logging for requests, errors, and custom events.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • The package solves a problem a Laravel codebase does not have: Laravel ships illuminate/log, which wraps Monolog directly and exposes channel drivers, handlers, and Log:: facades. Adding a Slim-to-Monolog adapter to a Laravel estate contributes nothing to the primary platform.
  • Value is strictly confined to a legacy Slim 2 service that still uses $app->log / Slim\Log and needs its output normalized into a shared Monolog pipeline. It is a compatibility shim, not a platform capability.
  • The package targets the Slim 2 Slim\Logger interface (emergency…debug), which Slim 3 replaced with PSR-3 (LoggerInterface) and Slim 4 expects to be injected. It does not bridge modern Slim at all.
  • The real dependency surface is Monolog itself. Slim 2-era code pins Monolog ~1.x (PHP 5.x compatible); Laravel 9+ runs Monolog 3.x. Installing this anywhere near the Laravel root composer.json risks an unresolvable Monolog constraint or forces a downgrade across the entire monorepo.

Integration feasibility

  • Feasible only as an isolated, pinned dependency inside a single legacy Slim 2 application's own composer.json, with the application built and deployed independently of the Laravel platform.
  • Non-feasible as a shared library, a platform-wide logging standard, or anything referenced by new code. The package has no PSR-3 support, no configurable handler stack of its own, and no modern framework bindings.
  • If the goal is unified logging, the correct integration is not this package but a shared standard: PSR-3 LoggerInterface, JSON formatter, stdout/stderr transport, correlation IDs. Each runtime (Laravel, Slim, workers) supplies its own binding to that standard.

Technical risk

  • Abandoned: last release 2015-07-15, roughly a decade of unpatched drift against Monolog, PHP, and Slim. Community score of 2.09 reflects this; the 0.76 "opportunity" signal reads as unmet market need, not package quality.
  • Unverifiable supply chain: repository listed as unknown at time of review — no auditable source, no CVE channel, no maintainer accountability. That is a blocker for anything touching production logs.
  • Security-adjacent: log handlers write attacker-influenced content (headers, user agents, exception messages). An unmaintained formatter/handler layer is a log-injection and unbounded-write risk we would have to own ourselves.
  • Version lock trap: accepting a Monolog 1.x constraint anywhere in the dependency graph propagates to every package in that graph.

Key questions

  1. Do we actually operate any Slim 2 services, and how many? If zero, this evaluation terminates.
  2. If yes — are they on a supported PHP runtime, and what is their planned retirement date?
  3. Is the objective "make one legacy service log correctly" or "standardize logging across the estate"? The first might justify a shim; the second never does.
  4. Can we vendor/fork the package into an internal repository with a named owner, rather than depending on an unknown upstream?
  5. What is the cost of bypassing the package entirely — i.e., injecting Monolog's Logger directly and dropping $app->log usage in the legacy app? Likely a few days of mechanical refactor.

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Laravel platform: out of scope. Use native channels, stack driver, and stderr transport for containers. No action.
  • Slim 2 legacy services: in scope, narrowly. Consume as a transitive implementation detail, never referenced in application business code — inject Monolog's Logger and adapt at the bootstrap boundary only.
  • Slim 3/4 services: excluded. They take a PSR-3 logger directly; this package adds nothing.

Migration path

  1. Inventory Slim services and their Slim/Monolog versions; classify each as retire, containerize-and-freeze, or rewrite.
  2. For services in the freeze bucket, vendor the package source into an internal Composer repository, pin exact versions, and record an owner and a review date.
  3. At the same time, refactor the call sites from $app->log->info(...) to an injected PSR-3 LoggerInterface. This is the actual exit ramp and is independent of the package.
  4. Once call sites are PSR-3, swap the adapter for monolog/monolog configured directly (or the Slim 4 bridge if the service is upgraded) and delete the dependency.
  5. Converge all runtimes — Laravel, legacy Slim, queue workers, scheduled jobs — on one log contract: JSON lines, ISO-8601 timestamps, service, env, request_id, trace_id, severity mapping to RFC 5424.

Compatibility

  • Assume only PHP 5.6–7.x and Monolog 1.x are exercised. Anything newer is untested by upstream and would be tested by us, in production.
  • Do not co-install with Laravel 9+ in the same Composer root. Enforce with a repository-level constraint or CI check that fails the build if a Monolog 1.x constraint appears in the platform graph.

Sequencing

  • Week 1: inventory and decision per service; publish the log contract and the PSR-3 mandate for new code.
  • Week 2–3: vendor/pin the shim for the freeze bucket; build the container image; wire stderr transport.
  • Week 4+: refactor call sites to PSR-3; add a CI guard on the Monolog version constraint; schedule the shim's removal alongside each service's rewrite or retirement.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Effectively 100% internal ownership from day one: no upstream maintainer, no issue triage, no patch stream. Every PHP or Monolog upgrade becomes our regression test.
  • Budget a standing, low-but-permanent tax — a few engineer-days per year per consuming service — plus unbudgeted spikes whenever the runtime is upgraded. This is the cost line that usually kills shims of this age.

Support

  • No vendor, no community forum of consequence, no documented failure semantics. On-call runbooks must be written by us; log pipeline outages will be diagnosed without upstream help.
  • Escalation path is "the one engineer who read the source." That is a single point of failure and must be named explicitly as a risk, not assumed away.

Scaling

  • Logging scales with the transport (stderr → collector → sink), not with this adapter. The adapter is per-process glue and imposes no meaningful throughput ceiling.
  • Real scaling limits are elsewhere: the legacy Slim 2 runtime's PHP version, its container image base, and whether its log volume is sampled or throttled before reaching the collector. Address those at the pipeline level.

Failure modes

  • Silent drop: adapter swallows or mis-formats under exceptions; logs vanish precisely when debugging matters most. Mitigate with a startup self-test that emits one record per level and asserts collector receipt.
  • Constraint conflict: a transitive Monolog bump makes the platform unbuildable. Mitigate with CI dependency-graph assertion.
  • Log injection / unbounded writes: unmaintained formatter passes raw user input through. Mitigate with sanitization at the collector and per-stream size caps.
  • Format drift: legacy service emits human-readable lines while the rest of the estate emits JSON, breaking dashboards and alerts. Mitigate by enforcing the shared formatter in the legacy bootstrap, not at the call sites.

Ramp-up

  • Low to learn, high to own. A competent PHP engineer reads the adapter in under an hour; establishing the internal fork, the CI guard, the runbook, and the exit plan is roughly one engineer-week.
  • Position this as temporary scaffolding with a dated removal ticket, not as a supported platform component. If it cannot be given an owner and an expiry date, the correct decision is to reject it and refactor the legacy service to PSR-3 directly.
