Nova Admin Bar Laravel Package

flagstudio/nova-admin-bar

A lightweight Laravel Nova add-on that displays a WordPress-style admin bar on your frontend pages, giving logged-in Nova users one-click access to edit the current record, open related resources, and jump into the Nova dashboard without leaving the site.

Getting Started

The package gives authenticated Nova users a persistent, WordPress-style toolbar on the frontend of your Laravel app, so they can jump back into the admin without remembering URLs.

  1. composer require flagstudio/nova-admin-bar
  2. Laravel package discovery registers the service provider automatically. If you've disabled discovery, add the provider from the package's composer.json (extra.laravel.providers) to config/app.php.
  3. Publish config and assets: php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Flagstudio\NovaAdminBar\NovaAdminBarServiceProvider" (confirm the exact namespace in the package src/). Look for a nova-admin-bar.php config and any JS/CSS tags to publish.
  4. Include the package's Blade component/directive in your main frontend layout — typically once, inside <body>, so every route inherits the bar.
  5. First use case: log into Nova, open the frontend in the same browser session, and you should see the bar with links back to the dashboard and (ideally) context-aware edit links for the current page/resource.

Because this is a small package (15 stars), the README and the package's own resources/views + config file are the real documentation — read those before wiring it in.

Implementation Patterns

  • Layout injection: Register the bar in your single base layout (resources/views/layouts/app.blade.php) rather than per-page, so it's available everywhere without duplication.
  • Guard awareness: Nova authenticates via the nova guard while your app typically uses web. Verify the package checks the right guard, or configure it to explicitly use your Nova guard.
  • Contextual links: The core value is mapping the current route/model to a Nova resource URL ("Edit this record"). If the package exposes a resolver, config mapping, or view extension, use it to add edit links for your domain models — this is where it pays off day-to-day.
  • Environment/role gating: Only render the bar in local/staging or for users with a specific role. You don't want a WordPress-style toolbar leaking to end users in production.
  • Custom menu items: Extend the config or published view to add links to your own tools (Horizon, Telescope, queue dashboards, logs) alongside Nova — it becomes a mini launcher.
  • CSS isolation: Scope the bar's styles under a wrapper class so it doesn't collide with your frontend framework's resets (Tailwind preflight, Bootstrap, etc.).

Gotchas and Tips

  • Maintenance risk: Last release is 2022-11-21. Nova internals and Laravel's asset pipeline (Vite) have moved on — test against your Nova version and be prepared to fork/fix a small number of files.
  • Cached views/config: A missing bar is usually php artisan view:clear + php artisan config:clear, or a config file that was never republished after an update.
  • Asset 404s: If styles/JS fail to load, re-run vendor:publish with the specific --tag and verify files landed in public/vendor/....
  • Auth mismatch: The most common "bar doesn't show" cause is being authenticated on the wrong guard. Quickly verify with Auth::guard('nova')->check() in a route or tinker.
  • Theme drift: WordPress-style bars often assume a light theme; check contrast if your frontend is dark.
  • Extend via published views/config, not vendor edits, so a future upgrade (or your own fork) stays manageable.
  • Weigh the alternative: If you only need the bar occasionally, a small custom Blade partial plus a route-to-Nova-URL helper may be lower risk than a stale third-party dependency — especially if you need it to work with modern Nova/Vite setups.
