Assetic Config Bundle Laravel Package

fazy/assetic-config-bundle

Symfony bundle that adds configuration support for Assetic, making it easier to define and manage asset pipelines, filters, and compiled assets. It simplifies wiring Assetic settings through bundle configuration.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build-time vs. runtime configuration of static assets. The package's core idea — swap placeholder tokens in CSS/JS for values from application config during the asset build — is a real product decision. It lets one asset bundle serve many environments/tenants without runtime templating or per-environment forks of your stylesheets.
  • White-label and multi-tenant theming. If your roadmap includes tenant-specific colors, logos, hostnames, or copy inside compiled assets, config-injection-at-build-time is one viable architecture. This package is a concrete prior-art reference for that pattern, even if you don't adopt the code.
  • CDN/host/env-specific endpoints in front-end bundles. Injecting API base URLs or asset hostnames into JS bundles at build time avoids shipping a runtime config fetch and the flash-of-wrong-endpoint problem.
  • Build vs. buy vs. borrow. There is no viable "buy" here — zero stars, zero dependents, no maintenance signal. The real decision is borrow the pattern (implement a small Vite/Webpack plugin or a Symfony AssetMapper/Encore plugin) versus adopt the library (not recommended).
  • Ecosystem fit check. This is a Symfony 2 bundle built on Assetic, not a Laravel package. Assetic and Symfony 2 are long end-of-life; Laravel has never used Assetic (it moved Mix → Vite). Any roadmap item that assumes this drops into a Laravel project is mis-scoped and should be re-decided immediately.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt only if all of the following hold:

  • You are maintaining a legacy Symfony 2.x application that already has Assetic in the pipeline and cannot be upgraded in the current cycle.
  • You need config values interpolated into compiled CSS/JS and have no budget for a small custom Assetic filter (which is roughly 50–100 lines of PHP).
  • You accept that you are vendoring unmaintained code and are prepared to fork and own it.

Look elsewhere — decisively — when:

  • You are on Laravel. This package provides zero value; there is no integration path. Implement the equivalent as a Vite plugin (transform hook) or a Blade/@vite directive with Vite::useBuildDirectory/env-driven config.
  • You are on Symfony 4+. Use Symfony Encore/Webpack, AssetMapper, or a small custom compiler pass instead. Assetic was removed from the standard distribution years ago.
  • You need security-sensitive config injected into assets. Anything compiled into a public CSS/JS file is public. Secrets, API keys, and internal hostnames must never flow through this path — this is a hard product constraint, not a nuance.
  • You need maintained code. Zero stars and zero dependents means no bug reports, no security review, and no upgrade path. Treat it as a design reference, not a dependency.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, unmaintained Symfony 2 plugin that injects configuration values into compiled CSS/JS. It is not compatible with our Laravel stack and sits on a build tool (Assetic) that the PHP ecosystem retired years ago. Recommendation: do not adopt. The underlying idea — one asset bundle, many environments and tenants, configured at build time — is sound and worth ~1–2 engineer-days to reimplement on our existing Vite pipeline, which we control and can maintain.

For engineering: Treat fazy/assetic-config-bundle as prior art only. The valuable takeaway is the pattern: a build-step transform that substitutes named placeholders in front-end assets with values from application config. Implementing this on Vite is a transform hook plus a typed config manifest — small, testable, and ours. The hard rules are: never inject secrets (build output is public), keep placeholder names validated against a schema so typos fail the build rather than shipping broken CSS, and pin config values per environment in CI so builds are reproducible. There is no migration path from this package; there is only a re-implementation, and it is cheap.
