Searchable Select Laravel Package

famcare/searchable-select

A Laravel package that adds a searchable select input to your forms, letting users filter long option lists with instant AJAX-powered search. Drop it into Blade views, point it at any model or endpoint, and get a lightweight dropdown without extra frontend work.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin data-entry ergonomics. Searchable selects are the difference between a usable and unusable form once an option set exceeds ~50–100 rows (customer picker, SKU, region/territory, assignee). This supports the decision of whether to invest in admin UX at all — it's a cheap lever with outsized effect on ops throughput and data-entry error rates.
  • Fork vs. replace. The package is explicitly a continuity fork of a removed upstream ("the original package from github is removed, this is a replacement"). That makes it the concrete artifact for the live decision: do we vendor/pin a rescue fork, or do we migrate off searchable selects entirely? That is a real roadmap question, not a hypothetical one.
  • Dependency governance. A single-maintainer fork with 1 star, 0 dependents, and one release is a forcing function to decide whether admin-panel dependencies belong in the critical path at all, and who owns them.
  • Feature scoping for Nova-based admin. Tells you whether "fast lookup in long dropdowns" is worth a sprint or is a free win from a field package.
  • Migration sequencing. If you're on Nova and planning a move to Filament/Livewire/Inertia, this is a low-cost stopgap rather than a strategic commitment.

Be clear internally that this is a decision-driver for admin tooling maintenance and dependency risk, not for product strategy.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already on Laravel Nova and have a form field bound to a large Eloquent relation or option list where a plain Select is unusable.
  • You already had the original upstream package in composer.json and it is now unresolvable — this is the intended drop-in replacement for exactly that scenario, and it's the strongest reason to pick it up.
  • You need the fix now, in a low-blast-radius context (internal admin, not customer-facing), and you're willing to pin or fork it yourself.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You're not on Laravel Nova. It has no value outside that ecosystem. Filament, Livewire, Inertia, Blade + Alpine, or a plain combobox library (Tom Select, Choices.js, select2, downshift) covers the same need.
  • You need maintained, security-reviewed, or SLA-backed dependencies. 1 star, 0 dependents, one release, and "the original was removed" provenance is a red flag for anything regulated or customer-facing. There is also no evidence of a Nova 4/5 support matrix or a test suite.
  • You'd rather solve the root cause: an async search endpoint field, or scope/paginate the relation so the dropdown is small enough not to need search.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: this is a small, tactical fix for our internal admin panel, not a product feature. When the original open-source component we depended on disappeared, this fork restores a searchable dropdown so operators can find the right record instead of scrolling through hundreds of entries. Cost is near-zero and risk is contained to internal tooling.

For engineering: treat it as a rescue fork, not a library. Vendor or pin it, read the source (it's small), put it on the dependency review list, and set an explicit trigger to migrate off — to native Nova capabilities, to an async search field, or to whatever replaces Nova in our admin stack. Don't let it silently become load-bearing infrastructure that nobody owns.
