Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy vs. borrow for a referral program. This is not a viable "buy" or dependency decision in 2024+: the repository is archived, the package is explicitly marked EOL, the last release was February 2016, and it has zero dependents. The realistic decision it informs is borrow the domain model, build the feature.
  • Feature scoping for referral/loyalty work. Elcodi's referral component is a reasonable reference sketch of the entities and flows a referral program needs (referrer/referee relationship, referral codes or invite links, attribution at signup/checkout, and reward issuance). Use it to pressure-test your own spec — particularly the edge cases most teams forget: self-referral, duplicate attribution, reward expiry, and refund/cancellation clawbacks.
  • Roadmap sequencing. If a referral program is on the roadmap, this package does not shorten the timeline. Treat the discovery as "we have a free MIT-licensed reference implementation to read for a day," not "we have a head start on delivery."
  • Stack fit decision. Despite being listed among PHP packages, this is Symfony e-commerce components, not Laravel. Adopting it in a Laravel codebase would mean bridging Symfony bundles, DI, and Doctrine mappings — costs that dwarf the value of re-implementing referral logic from scratch.
  • Vendor/technology risk posture. Archived + EOL + zero dependents is a clear signal for the risk register: no security patches, no PHP 8+ compatibility guarantees, no maintainer to escalate to. This is a "do not add to the dependency tree" outcome, independent of code quality.
  • Reuse option worth noting. The MIT license means you can legally lift patterns, schema ideas, or snippets into your own implementation without procurement or legal friction — the cheapest possible outcome from this evaluation.

When to Consider This Package

  • Only as a read-only reference — an architecture and naming study while writing your own referral domain spec. Budget hours, not sprints.
  • If you are maintaining a legacy Symfony 2.x/3.x application already built on Elcodi, where the component is already installed and working; even then, plan migration rather than extension.
  • Look elsewhere (strongly) when:
    • You are on Laravel, or any modern PHP runtime (PHP 8.1+). EOL since 2016 means unpatched dependencies and near-certain incompatibility.
    • You need anything beyond basic referral mechanics: multi-touch attribution, fraud/abuse detection, coupon and payout integrations, multi-currency rewards, analytics, or GDPR-grade data handling.
    • You require a supported vendor or SLA — there is no maintainer.
    • Security or compliance review is a gate; an archived repo will not pass.
  • Alternatives to evaluate instead: a maintained SaaS referral platform (ReferralCandy, Friendbuy, Talkable, Impact) if speed-to-market and fraud handling matter more than margin; or a small in-house Laravel module behind a feature flag if referral is a differentiator and volumes are modest.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Bottom line: do not adopt. elcodi/referral-program is an end-of-life component from an archived Symfony e-commerce project — last release February 2016, zero dependent packages, no maintainer, no security patching, and not built for Laravel. Our evaluation score is 2.34 with an opportunity score of 0.27, which matches the qualitative read: low upside, meaningful risk.

What it is still worth: it is MIT-licensed, so engineering can spend a few hours reading its referral domain model as free input to our own design — pure upside, zero dependency.

What we recommend instead: decide referral as a build vs. SaaS question on its own merits. If referral is a growth differentiator with meaningful volume, a small in-house module gives us control over attribution and reward economics. If we need it live this quarter and want fraud handling out of the box, a paid referral platform is faster than any build. Either path is cheaper than resurrecting a nine-year-old Symfony component. Ask: approval to spend one engineer-day on a spec informed by this reference, plus a scoped build-vs-SaaS comparison for the next planning cycle.
