Nova Tooltip Field Laravel Package

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin UX polish vs. scope creep. This package supports a narrow, tactical decision: whether to add contextual help text (hover tooltips) to fields inside an internal Laravel Nova admin panel, rather than building a bespoke tooltip component or overloading labels with copy.
  • Reducing internal support load. Tooltips next to confusing fields (taxonomies, pricing rules, compliance flags) are a cheap lever for cutting "what does this field do?" questions from ops/support staff. The decision this informs is where to invest in self-serve guidance — field-level microcopy versus docs versus training.
  • Build vs. buy at the micro-scale. At ~4 stars, 0 dependents, and a single maintainer, this is a candidate for a 1–2 hour in-house Nova field component rather than a dependency. The PM decision here is really "adopt, fork, or replicate," not a strategic platform choice.
  • Consistency of admin-facing disclosure. For regulated or audited workflows, tooltips can carry short compliance explanations inline. Useful if you need a uniform pattern across many Nova resources without touching each one's layout heavily.
  • Not a roadmap item. This is infrastructure for internal tooling. It should be evaluated under engineering's admin-panel budget, not treated as a customer-facing feature bet.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following hold:

  • You are already running Laravel Nova (this is useless outside Nova — it is a Nova field, not a general Blade/Vue component).
  • You need one-off or modest tooltip/help-text behavior on form fields and don't want to write a custom field.
  • Your Nova version is compatible — caution: last release was July 2021, predating Nova 4/5's internals changes. Verify against your installed Nova major version before assuming it works.
  • You accept the maintenance profile: 4 stars, 0 dependents, single maintainer, no releases in ~4 years. Treat it as a vendored snippet, not a dependency you'll rely on for upgrades.

Look elsewhere (or build in-house) when:

  • You are not on Nova, or you've moved admin tooling to Filament, Backpack, or a custom app — the effort is better spent on a framework-native solution.
  • You need active maintenance, security responsiveness, or upgrade guarantees. With zero dependents and a stale release, you are effectively the maintainer if it breaks.
  • You need richer behavior — popovers with links, rich text, conditional/multi-language copy, accessibility guarantees (screen-reader-friendly tooltips). A 4-star micro-package is unlikely to have invested in WCAG handling; for public-facing or accessibility-regulated contexts, build a tested component instead.
  • Your use case is broad enough that a design-system tooltip shared across admin and product surfaces is the better investment.

Practical recommendation: spike it, don't standardize on it. Copy the component into your codebase (MIT license permits this), adapt to your Nova version, and own it. That gives you the UX benefit without a fragile external dependency.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, low-cost utility for improving the internal admin tools our team uses — hover help text on form fields to reduce confusion and support questions. It is not customer-facing and carries no meaningful budget or strategic risk. My recommendation is not to adopt it as a dependency: it's an unmaintained, single-maintainer package last updated in 2021, so we'd absorb the equivalent of a few hours of engineering to replicate the behavior internally. Net: a minor internal productivity improvement, decided by engineering, no executive decision required.

To engineering: MIT-licensed Nova field that renders a tooltip/help affordance on form fields. Upside is tiny — it saves maybe an afternoon of Vue work. Downside is real: no releases since mid-2021, Nova major versions have changed since, and there are zero dependents, meaning no community validation. Suggest copying the source into our codebase rather than pulling it via Composer, pinning to our Nova version, and writing one test around the render path. If we find ourselves wanting tooltips beyond Nova, that's a signal to build a shared tooltip component rather than extend this.
