Duo Universal Php Laravel Package

duosecurity/duo_universal_php

Official Duo Security PHP SDK for the Universal Prompt. Add two-factor authentication to PHP apps with OAuth 2.0 token exchange, redirect handling, and callback verification against Duo's service.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Compliance-gated roadmap sequencing. MFA is a hard requirement in SOC 2 (CC6.1/CC6.6), HIPAA §164.312(d), PCI DSS 8.4.2, and ISO 27001 A.5.17/A.8.5. This package is the cheapest path to checking that box for a PHP/Laravel estate without re-architecting identity. It directly informs "what must ship before we can close the enterprise deal in Q3."
  • Build vs. buy for second-factor auth. The build alternative (push notification infrastructure, device enrollment, hardware token support, recovery flows, anti-fatigue-attack rate limiting) is a multi-quarter, security-specialist effort. This package reframes the decision as "integrate a vendor SDK" rather than "build an auth product," which is usually the correct call for any team that isn't an identity company.
  • Enterprise procurement unblocking. "Do you support Duo?" is a recurring line item in vendor security questionnaires. If your target segment already standardizes on Duo (common in healthcare, higher ed, financial services, and Cisco-shop enterprises), this converts a deal blocker into a checkbox. That's a sales-enablement decision, not an engineering one.
  • Step-up authentication use cases. Duo's policy engine supports context-aware step-up (risk-based, per-application, per-group). This enables product decisions like "require 2FA only for admin/back-office routes," "require re-auth for money movement or PII export," or "exempt read-only internal tooling" — without building a policy engine.
  • MFA modality scope. Duo covers push, phone callback, SMS, TOTP, and FIDO2/hardware tokens with self-service enrollment and an admin console for device resets and audit logs. Deciding which modalities you commit to in a contract is a product decision, and this package doesn't constrain you to TOTP-only the way Laravel Fortify does.
  • Login UX as a conversion lever. This is the Universal Prompt (OIDC redirect) SDK, replacing the deprecated iframe-based duo_web flow. That removes framing/CSP headaches and third-party-cookie fragility — a real, measurable reduction in login abandonment versus the old integration.
  • Not a differentiation lever. The low opportunity score is the correct read: MFA is table-stakes hygiene. Fund it as a compliance/enablement cost center, not as a product differentiator, and keep the investment proportional.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when most of the following hold:

  • Duo is already a corporate or customer standard, or a named requirement in an active deal or security review.
  • You need MFA modalities beyond TOTP — push, hardware tokens, telephony — or you need centralized device administration, self-service enrollment, and audit reporting that a homegrown TOTP implementation won't give you.
  • You're operating under a compliance regime that mandates MFA with an auditable trail, and you want a vendor attestation package rather than an internal control you have to defend to auditors.
  • Your application is PHP (Laravel included) and you're comfortable owning the integration layer — this is a framework-agnostic vendor SDK, not a Laravel package. No service provider, no guard, no published config. You write the controller, routes, middleware, session binding, and error handling. Budget for that explicitly; it's typically 2–5 engineer-days for a clean implementation plus test coverage.
  • Your user base is bounded and known (employees, contractors, B2B customers, licensed professionals). Per-user Duo licensing scales linearly against revenue here.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You only need TOTP. Laravel Fortify ships this free, already wired into the framework. Adding a paid per-user vendor for TOTP-only is hard to justify.
  • The requirement is really SSO/federation, not 2FA. Customers asking for "SSO with Okta" or "SAML" are asking for something this package does not do. Don't let a Duo integration get positioned as SSO in a sales conversation — that's a scope trap that surfaces late.
  • You want passkeys as the primary authentication method. Duo supports FIDO2, but if passwordless-first is the strategic direction, evaluate a WebAuthn/passkey provider directly rather than bolting it onto a 2FA vendor.
  • Unit economics are thin. Consumer or high-volume freemium products with large free tiers will find per-user MFA licensing punitive. Consider cost-tiering — protect privileged actions and paying accounts only.
  • You have no Duo relationship and no customer demanding it. The ecosystem signal here is thin (26 stars, low opportunity score). Vendor support is your real safety net, so this only makes sense if you're buying the vendor relationship too, not just the library. If you're evaluating identity vendors from scratch, compare Okta, Entra, Auth0, and Ping on total cost and roadmap fit before defaulting to Duo.
  • Migration optionality matters a lot. The OIDC foundation softens lock-in somewhat, but Duo's flow is Duo-flavored. Assume a future migration to another IdP is a re-integration, not a config change.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, well-scoped dependency that closes a recurring set of security-questionnaire blockers and satisfies MFA obligations under SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI DSS, and ISO 27001. It lets us meet those obligations by integrating a Cisco-owned, vendor-maintained SDK instead of building and operating push-MFA infrastructure ourselves — an effort that would consume multiple engineer-quarters and carry ongoing security liability we don't want to own. Cost is per-user licensing, so it scales predictably; scope it to privileged and paying users first. The honest caveat: this is hygiene, not differentiation — it won't win deals on its own, but its absence loses them, and it's the cheapest credible way to stop losing them.

For engineering: Standard OIDC authorization-code flow against Duo as the second-factor authority. The library handles state/PKCE and token exchange; it does not handle Laravel. We own the routes, the callback controller, session binding, middleware for step-up-protected routes, and — most importantly — the failure paths: Duo outage, user cancellation, enrollment-required, and lockout recovery. Failure handling is where these integrations actually break in production, so plan for graceful degradation (fail closed on privileged routes, fail open with alerting on low-risk ones) before you write the happy path. The dependency surface is small and the vendor is actively releasing (latest tagged release is recent), but the community footprint is minimal — the support channel is Duo, so confirm our entitlement covers library-level questions, not just the service. Roughly 2–5 engineer-days for a clean, tested integration.

Positioning note for both audiences: Do not let this get described internally or in sales material as "SSO." It is MFA. Conflating the two creates expectation gaps that surface during procurement and are expensive to unwind.
