Df Exporter Prometheus Laravel Package

dreamfactory/df-exporter-prometheus

DreamFactory module that exports DreamFactory platform metrics to Prometheus, enabling monitoring and alerting of your API platform. Note: this package is unmaintained and has no stars, so evaluate before production use.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature prioritization via usage telemetry. A Prometheus exporter turns DreamFactory API platform activity (request volume, latency, error rates, resource usage) into time-series metrics. That gives you evidence for roadmap calls — which endpoints/customers drive load, where latency regressions cluster — instead of intuition.
  • SLA and reliability commitments. If you're selling an API platform with uptime or latency SLAs, you need a metrics pipeline to measure and prove compliance. This package short-circuits the "build an exporter" work, letting you commit to SLAs earlier.
  • Usage-based pricing and quota enforcement. Per-request, per-endpoint metrics are the raw material for metered billing, tier design, and overage policy. A PM can evaluate pricing models against real counters rather than surveys.
  • Build vs. buy vs. integrate. The decision isn't "should we instrument?" — it's "do we write our own DreamFactory-to-Prometheus bridge, adopt this, or lean on DreamFactory's own tooling?" This package represents the lowest-effort integrate option; the assessment is whether its maintenance risk is cheaper than a few days of internal engineering.
  • Customer-facing observability as a differentiator. Exported metrics can feed tenant-level dashboards or status pages, which is often a retention lever in platform/API products.
  • Capacity planning and cost forecasting. Request and resource metrics inform infrastructure spend decisions and headroom targets ahead of peak events.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when all of the following hold:

  • You are already running DreamFactory as your API platform (this is not a general-purpose exporter — it's DreamFactory-specific).
  • You have or are willing to stand up Prometheus + Grafana (or a compatible scraping backend). Adopting the exporter without a metrics backend delivers nothing.
  • You need metrics for internal operations, SLA reporting, or metering, and the alternative is building and maintaining a custom exporter yourself.
  • You're comfortable with a small, low-signal dependency: 0 stars, 0 dependents, last release October 2019. Treat it as a vendored artifact rather than a living upstream. Apache-2.0 means forking is legally clean — budget for the possibility.
  • DreamFactory's commercial support or your own team can absorb breakage from DreamFactory/Prometheus version drift.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not on DreamFactory — this has no value outside that ecosystem.
  • Your observability strategy is OpenTelemetry-first or you're on managed cloud monitoring (Datadog, CloudWatch, New Relic). A bespoke Prometheus exporter is architectural debt in that world.
  • You require a supported, actively maintained component with a security response process. Nine-year-stale releases and zero community are a procurement red flag; check whether DreamFactory maintains an equivalent under their commercial offering.
  • You only need ad-hoc diagnostics — DreamFactory/API gateway logs and built-in metrics may suffice without adding a metrics stack.
  • You're evaluating this as a standalone product dependency for a platform you plan to expose broadly; the reputational and maintenance risk likely outweighs the integration savings.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, free, Apache-licensed connector that lets our DreamFactory API platform emit operational metrics into Prometheus. It's not a product feature — it's the measurement layer that makes SLA guarantees, usage-based pricing, and capacity planning defensible. The value is in the decisions it unblocks, not the code itself.

To engineering: Adopt it as a thin, forkable integration rather than an upstream dependency. Assume we own it: vendor the code, pin versions, and add it to our maintenance inventory. Two to three days of integration work buys us request/latency/error telemetry we'd otherwise build ourselves.

The honest caveat to lead with: The package is effectively unmaintained — last release 2019, no community adoption, and the linked repository is the DreamFactory skeleton rather than the exporter itself. That's a buy-with-a-plan-to-own decision, not a buy-with-a-plan-to-rely. Recommend a time-boxed spike to confirm it still works against our current DreamFactory and Prometheus versions before any roadmap commitment depends on it; if the spike fails, the fallback is a short internal exporter, which is a known and bounded cost.
