Df Apidoc Laravel Package

dreamfactory/df-apidoc

DreamFactory API documentation package that auto-generates OpenAPI/Swagger specs for your instance's REST APIs. It adds a browsable, interactive docs interface so developers can explore endpoints, review request and response schemas, and test calls directly from the platform.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Documentation as a first-class API feature. This is DreamFactory's own API-documentation component for the Laravel-based platform — the layer that turns auto-generated, data-source-derived endpoints into a browsable, machine-readable contract. Adopting it is a decision that generated APIs ship with docs by default, rather than docs being a hand-maintained afterthought.
  • Build vs. buy vs. fork for the docs layer. If DreamFactory is already in the stack, this is the "buy/adopt" path for Swagger/OpenAPI rendering and reference docs. The alternative — building spec generation and an explorer in-house — is weeks of undifferentiated work for a solved problem.
  • LLM/agent enablement roadmap. DreamFactory's positioning is governed API access for enterprise apps and local LLMs. Tool-calling and RAG-over-APIs both depend on accurate OpenAPI schemas. This package is a direct input to any "expose our data to agents" initiative — it determines whether the schema an LLM sees matches the endpoint that actually runs.
  • Docs-drift and contract-governance decisions. Because docs are derived from the API definition rather than written alongside it, this supports decisions about deprecation policy, versioning, and backward-compatibility gates: you can require that a contract change shows up in the generated spec before it ships.
  • Vendor/fork posture. With 0 stars and 0 dependents, the realistic PM decision is reference implementation or vendored internal fork, not "add a dependency and forget it." That framing changes the resourcing ask (an owner, a pinning policy) versus a normal library adoption.
  • Buyer-facing collateral. Useful for developer-portal and integration-guide workstreams: shortens the path from "we have APIs" to "partners can self-serve against them."

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You already run DreamFactory (self-hosted) and want its generated APIs documented consistently, especially when extending or theming the admin console.
  • Your API surface is largely schema-derived (databases, connectors) rather than hand-authored, so auto-generated specs are the natural fit.
  • You need machine-readable contracts for LLM tool definitions or partner integrations without standing up separate doc tooling.
  • Apache-2.0 is acceptable and you can pin a version, vendor the source, and accept ownership of patches — the license permits this comfortably.
  • You have Laravel/PHP engineers willing to read the source rather than treat it as a black box.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not on DreamFactory. There is no standalone value here; use zircote/swagger-php, knuckleswtf/scribe, or l5-swagger instead.
  • You need a supported dependency with an SLA or a community to lean on. Zero stars, zero dependents, and single-vendor maintenance is a bus-factor risk, not a maturity signal to discount.
  • Your APIs are hand-written and annotation-heavy, with CI-published docs and custom theming — general-purpose generators will out-feature this.
  • You would be the first external consumer. Budget the adoption cost as "internal fork," not "install."
  • Release metadata can't be verified. The listed last release date (2026-01-22) is ahead of the current date, which is a metadata anomaly worth resolving before any procurement or security review — treat it as an open diligence item, not a footnote.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): This isn't a product we buy — it's a component we can leverage if DreamFactory is already part of our platform. It gives us auto-generated, OpenAPI-based documentation that stays tied to live data sources, which cuts documentation drift and shortens the time it takes enterprise teams and LLM/agent integrations to consume our APIs. The cost is engineering attention, not license fees (Apache-2.0). The risk is that it has effectively no external community, so we should only adopt it with a named internal owner and a pinned version — otherwise we're taking on maintenance we haven't staffed.

For engineering: Treat the source as the spec. It's a DreamFactory-internal component published as a Composer package, so the integration boundary is DreamFactory's own service-definition model, not a general-purpose doc API. Wrap it behind a thin internal interface so we can swap to swagger-php or Scribe without touching product code. Pin the version, vendor the source, and log the upstream release date discrepancy during security review.

Recommendation: Timebox a two-week proof of concept in one squad. Success criteria: time-to-first-successful-partner-integration, count of doc-drift incidents, and whether the generated spec is accurate enough to drive an LLM tool definition unmodified. Promote to platform dependency only if we're prepared to own the fork.
