Filament Laravel Pulse Laravel Package

dotswan/filament-laravel-pulse

Filamental Laravel Pulse integrates Laravel Pulse monitoring into your Filament admin panel, providing a ready-made dashboard to view application performance, slow requests, queues, cache, and usage metrics without leaving Filament.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • The package is a presentation layer, not a monitoring system: it registers Filament widgets that read the data Laravel Pulse already records (pulse_* tables / Redis). It does not introduce a new agent, sidecar, data store, or collection pipeline.
  • Fit is therefore conditional and narrow: the application must already run Laravel Pulse with recording enabled and must already expose a Filament panel. Where both are true, this package is a near-zero-marginal-cost addition. Where either is false, the real work is adopting Pulse first — this package is not the entry point.
  • No changes to application domain code or request lifecycle are implied, which keeps blast radius small and reversible.

Integration feasibility

  • Expected install path is standard Composer plus a Filament plugin registration in the PanelProvider, optional config publishing, and explicit widget registration on a dashboard or page. Realistic effort for a Laravel-fluent engineer is measured in hours, not sprints.
  • The hard prerequisites are operational, not code: Pulse migrations applied, pulse_entries/pulse_aggregates populated, retention/trimming configured, and the cache/Redis driver Pulse depends on available in every environment where the dashboard is exposed.
  • Because widgets render inside the admin request cycle, integration also means deciding where they render — a dedicated "Platform Health" page rather than the default dashboard — so a widget failure cannot degrade the primary admin experience.

Technical risk

  • Primary risk is dependency concentration on two fast-moving first-party packages (Filament and Pulse). Both have shipped breaking major versions; a widget package sits directly on the seam between them.
  • Secondary risk is project maturity. At 84 stars with an unlisted repository, the bus factor is effectively one and there is no visible signal here on test coverage, CI, or issue responsiveness. MIT licensing mitigates this — the code can be vendored or forked — but only if the team is willing to own it.
  • Tertiary risk is data sensitivity and query cost: Pulse data includes user identifiers, slow endpoints, and job failure detail. Exposing it in an admin panel is an authorization decision, and reading large pulse_entries tables on every dashboard load is a performance decision.

Key questions

  • What is the supported version matrix — Filament 3 vs 4, Laravel 10/11/12, PHP 8.2+ — and does the latest release actually track current majors?
  • Is the repository public and inspectable, and is there a test suite and CI pipeline?
  • Do the widgets read pre-aggregated Pulse tables, or do they run ad-hoc queries against raw entries? The answer determines dashboard latency and database load.
  • What authorization and multi-tenancy hooks exist? Can widget visibility be gated per role or per tenant?
  • What is the maintainer's release cadence and typical response time on security and compatibility issues?
  • What is the configuration surface — refresh intervals, thresholds, cache TTLs — and are sane defaults provided?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Composer-native, no infrastructure change, no new runtime service. It slots into an existing Laravel + Filament + Pulse stack as a plugin and a set of widgets.
  • The only genuine stack prerequisite is that Pulse is installed, migrated, recording, and retained. Treat "Pulse is healthy" as a gate, not an assumption.

Migration path

  1. Confirm Pulse is installed in staging with recording enabled and verify that data is actually landing (check aggregate rows, not just that the route responds).
  2. Add the package with an explicit, pinned Composer constraint; commit the lockfile.
  3. Register the plugin in the PanelProvider behind a config flag so it can be disabled per environment.
  4. Attach widgets to a secondary or new "Platform Health" page, not the default dashboard.
  5. Validate rendering, query timing, and data correctness against Pulse's own UI for the same window.
  6. Apply authorization gating, then promote to the primary ops-facing panel.

Compatibility

  • Pin exact versions and verify constraints against the application's Filament and Pulse versions before installing. Widget APIs are the most likely breakage point across Filament majors.
  • Pulse's storage schema has been comparatively stable, but confirm the package's queries match the schema version in use rather than assuming.
  • If the application is on an older Filament major, verify a compatible package release exists before committing to the approach; otherwise this becomes a fork-and-maintain decision.

Sequencing

  • Do Pulse hygiene first (retention/trimming, driver availability, backup coverage of monitoring tables), because widget performance and correctness both depend on it.
  • Then package adoption behind a flag, then RBAC, then promotion. Keeping the feature flag through the first full upgrade cycle is the cheapest insurance available.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • The package itself is small and low-churn, but it inherits the upgrade cadence of Filament and Pulse. Expect to touch it on every Filament major upgrade and to re-verify on Pulse minors.
  • Budget a recurring, small line item: a compatibility spike each upgrade cycle plus a fork-ready posture. Do not treat a 10-point heuristic score or 84 stars as a durability guarantee.

Support

  • Support risk is the dominant operational cost. With an unlisted repository and a single-maintainer profile, the realistic posture is "we support this ourselves, with upstream as a convenience."
  • Mitigation: vendor or fork under MIT, keep a named internal owner, and track upstream releases. If nobody will own it, do not adopt it.

Scaling

  • Scaling pressure comes from the admin dashboard, not from user traffic. Widget queries against high-volume Pulse tables can get slow as entries accumulate; retention policy and pre-aggregation are the levers.
  • Low concurrent admin usage means this rarely becomes a capacity problem, but a single slow widget can push a dashboard past acceptable load time. Measure query time in staging against production-shaped data volume, not an empty table.

Failure modes

  • Pulse tables missing or unmigrated → widget exceptions on render; isolate on a dedicated page.
  • Pulse recording silently disabled or driver unavailable → widgets show empty or stale data, which reads as "all healthy." This is the most dangerous failure mode because it is a false negative during an incident.
  • Redis/cache outage → Pulse-dependent widgets error alongside the outage they were meant to explain; keep an independent path to raw metrics.
  • Large pulse_entries table → slow queries and dashboard timeouts.
  • Missing authorization → non-admin users gain visibility into endpoints, users, and job failure detail.
  • Unpinned Composer constraint → a routine composer update breaks the panel.

Ramp-up

  • For an engineer already familiar with Filament, ramp-up is measured in hours: install, register, place widgets, verify data.
  • For a team new to Pulse, the real ramp-up is understanding Pulse itself — what it records, how retention works, what the aggregates mean — because the widgets are only as trustworthy as the data beneath them. Plan for that learning curve separately and do not conflate it with package adoption.
