Filament Locksmith Laravel Package

discoverydesign/filament-locksmith

Filament Locksmith adds record locking to Filament resources, letting admins lock sensitive records to prevent edits or deletions. It provides lock and unlock actions, clear lock-status indicators, and configurable enforcement so teams can protect critical data from accidental changes.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit This release is a compatibility bump, not a feature release. The package is a Filament plugin (panel-level extension registered through a Laravel service provider and a Filament Plugin class), so its architecture fit is inseparable from the host Filament major. Shipping a 2.0.0 that targets Filament V4 means the package's supported surface is now pinned to a new host major, and the previous major line is implicitly the Filament V3 line. That is the correct packaging decision for a plugin, but it means "architecture fit" must be evaluated as a paired upgrade: Filament V4 + plugin 2.x, not the plugin in isolation. The package remains a composer-installable, auto-discovered Laravel package — no new infrastructure, no new runtime component, no change to the deployment topology.

Integration feasibility Low-to-moderate. Integration is a composer constraint change plus, in most cases, no application code change on the consuming side (plugin config and panel registration are typically unchanged). The real cost sits in the host upgrade, which this release does not cause but does gate. Feasibility is high if the application is already on Filament V4; it is zero if the application is on Filament V3, and the 2.0.0 tag cannot be adopted until that migration lands. Because the release notes are a single line, we cannot yet confirm Laravel/PHP minimums, whether V3 support is retained in a parallel 1.x branch, or which Filament V4 sub-APIs (schema/form namespace consolidation, action and table APIs, testing helpers) the plugin actually touches.

Technical risk The dominant risk is the major-version boundary itself: ^1.x will not resolve to 2.0.0, so any transitive or shared dependency expecting the old constraint will block the upgrade or, worse, cause a split where two plugins in the same panel require incompatible Filament majors. Secondary risks: no documented deprecation path for 1.x; unknown whether 1.x will receive security patches; silent behavioural differences if the plugin's Filament V4 port changed rendering or action wiring (a one-line changelog gives no assurance that only the constraint moved); and the usual Filament upgrade hazards — published assets/config needing republish, cached panel/component manifests, and Livewire version coupling. Test coverage is unverified, and a single-line changelog on a major tag is a weak signal for a package that will run inside production admin panels.

Key questions

  • Is the 2.0.0 diff only the Filament constraint and namespace/API port, or does it include behavioural changes to tables, forms, actions, or widgets?
  • What are the exact composer.json requirements (PHP, Laravel, Filament, Livewire) for 2.0.0?
  • Is there a maintained 1.x branch for Filament V3, and for how long?
  • Is there an upgrade guide, and does it document breaking changes beyond the host major?
  • Does the plugin have CI covering the Filament V4 matrix, and what is the test suite's coverage of panel registration and rendering?
  • Who is the maintainer, what is the release cadence, and is there a responsive issue tracker?
  • Are there known downstream plugins in our panel that are still V3-only?

Integration Approach

Stack fit Fits cleanly for any Laravel application already on Filament V4: standard service provider with auto-discovery, config publish, optional migrations/assets. No divergence from Laravel conventions and no bespoke bootstrapping. If our panels are on V3, the package is simply out of scope until the host moves — the plugin cannot lead the upgrade.

Migration path Treat this as one upgrade, not two: (1) branch; (2) bump Filament to V4 across the app and all Filament plugins together, using Filament's own upgrade guide and any provided Rector rules; (3) resolve the full plugin set to V4-compatible majors — this package goes to ^2.0 here; (4) republish config/assets if the plugin's publishable set changed; (5) clear cached panel/components/views and rebuild; (6) smoke-test every panel page the plugin touches. Do not attempt to run the plugin at 1.x against Filament V4 or vice versa — mixed majors in one panel is the failure case to design out.

Compatibility Build an explicit matrix before touching composer.json: PHP, Laravel, Filament, Livewire, and every other Filament plugin in the panel, each with its V4-ready version. The constraint resolution is the go/no-go gate. Lock the matrix into CI so a future composer update cannot silently reintroduce a V3 plugin.

Sequencing Pin 1.x on the current branch and keep it deployable. Land the Filament V4 upgrade on a branch with this package at 2.0.0 and all sibling plugins upgraded together. Verify in a staging panel with realistic data volumes before touching production. Only after the panel is stable on V4 do we consider unpinning 1.x. If any sibling plugin lacks a V4 release, defer the whole upgrade rather than running a partial panel.

Operational Impact

Maintenance Ongoing cost is low if 2.x genuinely tracks Filament V4 with parity — it becomes a standard dependency with routine patch bumps. The real cost is the transition window: if the maintainer keeps a 1.x line, expect a period of dual-branch releases and backports, and expect security fixes to land on 2.x only. Budget for a re-review at the next Filament major, since plugin majors will follow it again.

Support Support surface is the maintainER's responsiveness plus Filament's own community. A single-line changelog and no linked upgrade guide is a yellow flag for support quality — verify the issue tracker is active before this becomes load-bearing for an admin panel. Internal support burden is limited to whoever owns the panel upgrade.

Scaling No meaningful scaling change: this is admin-panel code, not request-path code. Watch only the usual Filament characteristics — table queries, widget polling, and asset build size — and confirm the V4 port did not regress query behaviour on the plugin's list/table surfaces. Load it in staging against production-sized datasets before rollout.

Failure modes

  • Constraint conflict: another plugin pins Filament V3, composer cannot resolve, upgrade stalls.
  • Mixed majors in one panel: registration or class-not-found errors at panel boot.
  • Stale caches/assets after upgrade: panel renders incorrectly or 404s on published assets.
  • Silent behavioural change in a ported action/table/widget — renders fine, behaves differently.
  • Abandoned 1.x: security fixes stop landing on the branch we are stuck on.
  • Transitive transitive breakage from Filament V4's own dependency shifts (Livewire, etc.).

Ramp-up Low for users — installation and panel registration are unchanged from 1.x. Moderate for engineers doing the host upgrade: the team needs working knowledge of Filament V4's API changes and the panel registration/caching model. Plan a short internal spike on a throwaway panel to build that familiarity before scheduling the production migration, and capture the matrix and the rollback step in the upgrade ticket.
