Nova Markdown Laravel Package

dinandmentink/nova-markdown

A Laravel Nova field package that adds Markdown editing and rendering to your admin resources, letting you author content in Markdown with preview and display it as formatted HTML. Easily integrate Markdown-based text fields into Nova.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Content-authoring UX inside the admin panel. If your product lets internal users (marketing, support, ops) author rich content — help-center articles, changelog entries, policy pages, email templates, blog posts — a markdown field is a real feature decision, not a cosmetic one. This package is one implementation option for that editor surface.
  • Build vs. buy for field components. The real decision here is not "this package vs. nothing," it's "this package vs. Nova's native Markdown field vs. a small custom field we own." That is a genuine build-vs-buy tradeoff with ongoing maintenance cost on one side and zero cost on the other.
  • Roadmap scoping for the admin tier. Markdown editing is a "table stakes" capability in a Nova-based back office. It doesn't differentiate your product; it should therefore be the cheapest thing that clears the bar, not a place to spend sprint capacity.
  • Vendor/legacy migration planning. Because the package is archived, adopting it is effectively a decision to schedule future removal work. That belongs in the roadmap conversation, not just the PR.
  • Use cases this does not unlock: no collaborative editing, no live preview guarantees across Nova versions, no image/asset pipeline, no content validation or sanitization opinions. Do not scope product features (e.g., "authors see rendered preview before publishing") on the assumption this package provides them.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt only if all of these hold:

  • You are pinned to an older Nova major version (roughly the Nova 1.x/2.x era this package was built against) and cannot upgrade in the near term.
  • Nova's native Markdown field is unavailable or insufficient for your specific requirement — verify this first, because Nova has shipped a Markdown field for years, which likely makes this package redundant.
  • You need the exact editor behavior it wraps and are comfortable vendoring or forking it, since upstream is archived (no fixes, no security patches, no Nova-version compatibility work).
  • Your team accepts bus factor 1 and ~36 stars of community surface area — expect no Stack Overflow answers, no issue triage, and no upgrade path you didn't write yourself.

Look elsewhere (or build in-house) when:

  • You're on a current Nova major (Vue 3-era frontend). An archived field component is a strong candidate for silent breakage on upgrade; treat compatibility as unverified until proven.
  • You need maintained third-party support, security review, or an SLA — MIT + archived means none of that.
  • Your requirement is modest: ship Nova's built-in Markdown field and spend the saved effort on the actual product.
  • Your requirement is ambitious (collaboration, slash commands, asset management, custom rendering pipeline). Fork-and-own is the honest answer; a 36-star archived dependency is the wrong foundation to extend.
  • You're in a regulated or security-sensitive context where a dependency with no active maintainer is a review blocker regardless of how small it is.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a tiny, free, MIT-licensed editor add-on for our admin panel. It is archived by its author, meaning nobody is fixing bugs or security issues. Since Nova already ships a markdown field, my recommendation is do not adopt — we get the same user-facing capability at zero dependency risk by using the built-in field. Adopting it would create a small but permanent maintenance line item for no product differentiation.

To engineering: Treat as a read-only reference, not a dependency. It's a thin wrapper adding a markdown editor component to a Nova field, last maintained in the Nova 1.x/2.x era; assume it is not compatible with current Nova releases without verification. Recommendation: use Nova's native Markdown field; if we need behavior it doesn't cover, spend the (small) effort on a field we own rather than forking an archived repo. If someone insists on evaluating it, timebox to a spike and check: Nova major compatibility, Vue version, sanitization behavior on render, and whether any transitive dependencies are stale.
