Nova Detail Link Laravel Package

dillingham/nova-detail-link

Adds a configurable detail link to Laravel Nova resource index rows, letting you jump straight from a Resource's list view to its detail page or a custom URL. Simple to install, easy to customize, and handy for speeding up navigation in Nova admin panels.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin UX polish vs. engineering time: this is a single-purpose affordance — making a text value in a Nova index table clickable through to the resource detail view. The decision it informs is whether to spend an hour improving internal navigation or leave operators copy-pasting IDs. Low cost, low blast radius, internal-only.
  • Build vs. buy vs. copy: the honest framing is buy-for-now, copy-later. The package is a thin wrapper over Nova's Field API; the durable decision is usually "replicate the pattern in our own Text/Link field" rather than take a dependency for ~30 lines of behavior. Use the repo as a reference implementation and a sanity check on expected API.
  • Where this matters: ops/support-facing index screens where the table is the primary navigation surface — a support agent scanning orders, tickets, or accounts and needing one click into the record. The value shows up when a team lives in Nova daily; it is invisible otherwise.
  • Roadmap placement: a "quality-of-life / internal tooling" backlog item, not a customer-facing feature. It should never compete with revenue work, and it should be trivially reversible if it misbehaves.
  • Use-case scoping: the package links a text field to the same resource's detail view. It does not solve cross-resource linking, permission-aware linking, or deep links into a filtered view — decide up front whether the requirement is really this narrow or something richer.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt (or, more accurately, evaluate) when:

  • You are running Laravel Nova and have an index table where an identifier, name, or slug field is the natural click target.
  • You want the behavior this sprint with no appetite for writing and reviewing a custom field.
  • Internal admin is low-risk: no sensitive data exposure beyond what the table already renders, no strict dependency-vetting gate.
  • You can pin the version, vendor the code, or fork it, and you're comfortable owning it.

Look elsewhere — or write the field yourself — when:

  • You're on modern Nova. Nova 4+ ships first-class linking on fields (e.g. ID::make()->asLink()), plus asHtml() and custom fields that make this a non-problem. Verify against your Nova version before adding a package.
  • Maintenance and security posture matter. Last release April 2019, 22 stars, single maintainer. That is an unmaintained dependency: no guaranteed compatibility with newer Nova/PHP, no security response, no issue triage. Procurement or security review will likely reject it on those grounds alone.
  • Your requirement is broader than "link to my own detail page" — conditional links, multi-tenant route resolution, permission-gated navigation, or links into related resources.
  • You're not on Nova. The package is meaningless outside it.
  • You need tests and SLAs. You'll be writing the coverage yourself either way.

Practical middle path: install it in a branch as a proof of concept, confirm the UX win is real with the ops team, then reimplement the behavior as an in-house field and drop the dependency.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a one-hour internal-tooling improvement that makes our admin panel faster to navigate — staff click a value in a list and land on the record instead of copying IDs, which compounds across dozens of lookups a day. There is no customer-facing impact and no data-model change. The caveat is that the open-source package behind it hasn't been updated since 2019, so the recommendation is not to adopt it as a long-term dependency: we use it as a pattern, reproduce the behavior in our own codebase, and keep full control.

To engineering: Tiny Nova field that renders a text value as a link to the resource's detail view. Given the package's age and staleness, treat it as a reference rather than a dependency — either confirm Nova's native field linking already covers our version, or spend the short effort to build a small in-house field with a test. Either way, the deliverable is a clickable index column, not a new package in composer.json.

Recommendation: Low priority, low effort, high reversibility. Resolve via native Nova capability or an in-house field; take this package only as a stopgap if Nova's built-ins don't fit and speed outweighs dependency hygiene.
