Nova Plain Text Field Laravel Package

digitalazgroup/nova-plain-text-field

A Laravel Nova field for displaying plain, unformatted text in your admin panel. Skip the editor and render clean, readable values in index and detail views—ideal for read-only notes, descriptions, and simple content.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin UX polish for internal tools. If our operations, support, or finance teams work inside a Laravel Nova panel, this field lets us display computed or system-owned values (order IDs, external sync references, slugs, timestamps, audit metadata, derived totals) as plain read-only text inside a form — instead of the editable input that Nova's default Text field renders.
  • Build vs. buy vs. write-in-house. This is a ~50–100 line Nova field class. The real decision isn't "adopt or not" — it's "do we take a dependency for a cosmetic field, or spend 30 minutes writing it ourselves?" That framing should go into the ticket either way.
  • Roadmap signal, not a roadmap item. Adoption is only relevant if our admin surface is Nova-based and we're on a Nova version this package supports. It doesn't unlock new product capability; it removes a small friction point in back-office workflows.
  • Risk exposure is near-zero but non-zero. Zero stars, zero dependents, no visible maintenance signal. The blast radius is one field type in an internal admin panel, but unvetted third-party code in an admin panel still touches authenticated back-office surfaces.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it if:

  • We are already running Laravel Nova (paid license) and this package's Nova version constraint matches ours — verify this first, because Nova's field API has broken across major versions and an unmaintained field is the most likely thing to break on a Nova upgrade.
  • The need is genuinely "show text, don't let anyone edit it" in a form context. If the need is only on the detail page, Nova's built-in field configuration (->onlyOnDetail(), ->readonly(), ->copyable()) covers it with zero new dependencies.
  • We're comfortable vendoring or forking it. At this size, copying the field class into app/Nova/Fields/ is arguably the better move than a Composer dependency.

Look elsewhere or skip it if:

  • We're not on Nova. This package has no meaning outside that ecosystem — which is also why the opportunity score is low; the addressable audience is a small, licensed subset of Laravel teams.
  • We need formatted output (Markdown, HTML, links, badges, code blocks). A plain-text field is the wrong primitive; use Nova's HTML/Markdown fields or a custom component.
  • We need inline editing, copy-to-clipboard affordances, or masking — evaluate Nova's native field options first.
  • Our dependency policy requires maintained packages. With no stars, no dependents, and no clear release cadence, it fails a standard OSS health check. That alone should route us to an in-house field.
  • We're on the latest Nova major and the package hasn't been updated for it.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a micro-dependency for our internal admin panel, not a product investment. It makes back-office screens slightly cleaner and reduces the chance an operator accidentally edits a system-generated value. Cost is effectively zero; strategic value is also effectively zero. Recommendation: do not formally adopt — have engineering replicate the behavior in-house in under an hour so we own it, avoid an unmaintained dependency, and sidestep any Nova upgrade risk.

To engineering: It's a Nova field that renders read-only plain text in forms. Before adding it, confirm three things: (1) our Nova major version matches the package's constraint, (2) Nova's native Text::make(...)->readonly() / ->onlyOnDetail() doesn't already satisfy the requirement, and (3) the license permits our use — the repo doesn't make this obvious. If it clears all three, vendor or fork the class rather than pulling it from Packagist; the code is small enough that ownership is cheaper than dependency management.
