Resource Navigation Link Laravel Package

digital-creative/resource-navigation-link

A Laravel Nova package that adds configurable navigation links to your resources, letting you jump quickly between related records or external destinations from a resource's index and detail views with minimal setup.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin-panel UX polish (feature-level): Adds a first-class "navigation link" element inside Laravel Nova resources — pointing an admin user at a related Nova resource (internal) or an arbitrary URL (external). Useful for cross-resource workflows: "View order in storefront," "Open customer in CRM," "Jump to docs/runbook," "Open in legacy admin."
  • Build vs. buy: This is a ~100-line Nova field. The buy case is "save half a day and standardize the interaction pattern"; the build case is "we already have custom fields and don't want another dependency." The decision hinges on how many places we'd otherwise hand-roll anchor markup, not on the package's intrinsic sophistication.
  • Roadmap signal for internal tooling: If back-office/ops tooling is on the roadmap and Nova is the chosen admin stack, small field packages like this are cheap leverage — they reduce bespoke Blade partials and make "linked resources" a consistent, configurable primitive rather than per-resource snowflake code.
  • Use cases worth trialing: (a) stitching together two systems during a migration/replatform window, (b) surfacing an external SPA or legacy tool from inside the admin, (c) giving support/ops a one-click path from an admin record to the customer-facing page.
  • Not a differentiator: This does not affect end-customer experience, performance, or revenue. Treat it as an internal DX/UX line item, not a product bet.

When to Consider This Package

  • You are on Laravel Nova, on a PHP/Laravel version the package supports, and you have a recurring need to render links (internal resource or external URL) across multiple resources.
  • You want configurable behavior without code — text/label, target (same tab vs. new tab), conditional visibility, and authorization-aware display are the kind of knobs that justify a field package over inline HTML.
  • You value consistency over control: adopting it means adopting someone else's API surface and rendering conventions. Fine for admin tooling; don't let it shape anything customer-facing.
  • Signals are thin — validate before committing: 10 stars, 0 dependents, single-maintainer org. That is not disqualifying for a micro-package (small surface area, MIT, easy to fork or vendor), but it means you are the QA. Read the source (it's small), pin the version, and smoke-test on your Nova version before it lands in a shared admin.
  • Look elsewhere / just build it if: you're not on Nova; you need anything beyond a link (embedded previews, deep-link routing logic, permissions beyond Nova's own policies); you need a vendor with SLAs or a security review process; or your team already has a house pattern for custom Nova fields — in that case the marginal saving is near zero and the coordination cost is not.
  • Do not adopt as a dependency of a customer-facing or revenue-path surface. Admin-only blast radius is the whole value proposition.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

  • To executives (one line): A small, free, MIT-licensed add-on for our admin panel that lets ops and support jump from an internal record straight to the related page or external system — cheap to try, cheap to remove.
  • To engineering: It's a low-risk Nova field that replaces ad-hoc anchor markup with a configurable primitive; ~100 lines of surface area, permissively licensed, so the exit cost is "copy the file into our app" if the maintainer goes quiet. Recommend a timeboxed spike: wire it into two resources, confirm it behaves on our Nova version, then decide whether to standardize or absorb the pattern in-house.
  • Framing the trade-off honestly: The package's maturity signals are weak (tiny install base, single maintainer), so we treat it as source we are borrowing, not infrastructure we are depending on. No roadmap commitment, no cross-team dependency, no lock-in.
  • Success metric: number of admin resources using it after 30 days, and reduction in one-off link partials — if neither moves, we drop it and keep the pattern in-house.
