Logmanager Laravel Package

dick/logmanager

A Laravel package for managing application log files without SSH: browse, search, filter, download, and clear logs from your app or admin panel. Simple configuration and a clean API make everyday log inspection and troubleshooting quick.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for internal admin tooling. This package answers a question every Laravel team eventually asks: "do we build our own log viewer in the admin panel?" A ~1-file-per-concern package that previews, downloads, and deletes storage/logs/*.log is usually cheaper to adopt and maintain than a hand-rolled controller + Blade view + auth gate. Use it to close the ticket, not to open a roadmap epic.
  • Roadmap sequencing: observability spend. It lets you defer a real logging platform (Sentry, Datadog, Papertrail, CloudWatch) without leaving support and engineering blind. Frame it as a bridge, not a destination — buy 6–12 months of runway before a centralized logging line item becomes unavoidable.
  • Support and incident triage workflow. The primary product value is mean time to diagnosis, not log storage. If tier-1 support or QA currently files a ticket to engineering ("can you SSH in and check the log?") for every customer-reported 500, this collapses that loop. That's a measurable support-cost decision: fewer escalations, faster first response.
  • Access-tier decision: who gets to see production errors? Previewing raw logs is a permissions decision as much as a technical one. Shipping this forces you to explicitly decide whether support, QA, or only on-call engineering can read production logs — and whether delete is a separate permission from read.
  • Feature-level debugging without new instrumentation. Before committing engineering time to custom structured logging, error codes, or a debug panel, check whether surfacing raw logs to the right people solves the underlying need. Cheapest experiment first.
  • Environment strategy. Useful in staging/pre-launch QA and in small single-tenant production deployments; the decision to enable it per-environment is a legitimate product/ops call (e.g., on in staging, gated and IP-restricted in prod, off in regulated tenants).

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • The app is Laravel, logs are the default daily/single file driver, and they live on the same filesystem as the app (single server, VM, or a shared volume).
  • The team is small (roughly <15 engineers) and there is no existing centralized logging platform.
  • You already run an admin panel — this slots in naturally alongside Backpack/Filament/Nova-style admin surfaces — or you're comfortable registering a guarded route.
  • The need is genuinely preview / download / delete, not search, parse, tail, or alert.
  • You can place it behind strong auth (admin role + IP allowlist) and accept that anyone with the route can read potentially sensitive log content.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Multi-server, containerized, or ephemeral filesystems (Kubernetes, ECS, Lambda, Heroku-style dynos). Local-file reading is structurally wrong there — you need centralized log shipping.
  • You need search, filtering, structured/JSON parsing, live tailing, alerting, retention policies, or cross-service correlation. This package is a file browser, not an observability tool.
  • Compliance applies (SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI, GDPR). Raw logs routinely contain PII, auth tokens, and request bodies; you need access auditing, redaction, and retention guarantees this does not provide.
  • Maintenance risk is unacceptable. The metadata here is a weak trust signal — zero dependents, no star count, and a vendor namespace that doesn't obviously map to the upstream project. Treat the dick/logmanager name as a supply-chain vetting item: confirm it is the genuine tabacitu/Backpack artifact, diff it against the upstream repo, and pin the version before it touches production. If you can't resolve provenance, don't ship it.
  • Delete is a hard requirement for non-engineers. Destructive file deletion in a web UI is a footgun; if you can't trust the audience, ship read-only or skip it.
  • You need something an auditor, a customer, or an SLA will point at. This is internal tooling, not a platform.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A small, low-cost internal tool that lets support and engineering see application errors directly from the admin panel instead of filing an engineering ticket to check a server. The business case is faster incident resolution and fewer escalations, and it lets us defer a paid observability platform for another budget cycle. Cost is near zero; risk is contained if we restrict it to admins and keep it off in regulated or multi-server environments. Recommendation: adopt as a time-boxed bridge, revisit when we move to multi-server infrastructure or need alerting.

To engineering: A Laravel package that adds a guarded admin route to list, preview, download, and delete log files from storage/logs. It's a thin file browser — no parsing, no search, no tailing, no remote sources — so it does not replace a log aggregator and shouldn't be treated as one. Before adoption: verify provenance (the registry metadata we have is thin and the vendor namespace is ambiguous), pin the version, and gate the route behind admin middleware plus an IP allowlist. Delete should be restricted or disabled. Budget a short spike to confirm compatibility with our Laravel version and log driver; if we're on containers or ephemeral storage, stop — this is the wrong tool and we should be shipping logs centrally instead.
