Laravel Typesense Laravel Package

devloopsnet/laravel-typesense

Laravel integration for Typesense, the open-source typo-tolerant search engine. Index Eloquent models, run typed queries, and manage collections from your app with an expressive API built for fast, relevant full-text search.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Search backend selection. This package is the connective tissue that lets a Laravel app keep Scout's model-level API (Model::search(), ->where(), ->paginate()) while swapping the engine underneath. That makes "which search engine?" a reversible, config-level decision rather than a rewrite — the single most valuable property here for a PM.
  • Unit-economics and cost modeling. The real driver for evaluating Typesense is usually Algolia's per-request pricing as search volume grows. A Scout driver lets you price out self-hosted or Typesense Cloud (entry clusters typically in the tens of dollars per month) against a usage-tiered SaaS bill, and validate the crossover point with real query volume instead of a spreadsheet guess.
  • Roadmap for search-dependent features. Typo tolerance, faceting, synonyms, geo search, and curated relevance are gated on having a real engine rather than LIKE queries. This package is the enabler for a "search relevance" epic without committing to a proprietary vendor.
  • Build vs buy on the driver layer. The honest framing: you are not choosing whether to build a search engine (never build), you are choosing whether to own ~a few hundred lines of driver glue. This package is a "buy" (adopt) option for that thin layer — but see the maintenance caveat below, because the thin layer still has a maintainer.
  • Data residency / on-prem commitments. If a roadmap item includes enterprise or regulated customers who cannot send index data to a US SaaS, a self-hostable engine plus a Scout driver is the cheapest path to a credible answer in a security questionnaire.
  • Multi-tenant and environment strategy. Because the engine is configured per-environment, you can run a small local Typesense in CI and dev, which shortens feedback loops on search work — a DX decision, not just an infra one.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt only when all of these hold:

  • You are standardized on Laravel Scout and want to keep it (i.e., you value the portability abstraction, not just the search results).
  • You have a concrete reason to prefer Typesense specifically: self-hosting requirement, cost ceiling, latency targets, or existing operational familiarity.
  • You have verified the Composer constraints against your Laravel and PHP versions — Scout's major versions have moved, and driver packages lag. Pin and test; do not assume.
  • You have someone who can read the driver source and patch it. With zero stars and zero dependents, treat this as vendored code with a public URL, not as a supported dependency.

Look elsewhere when:

  • A Typesense-maintained Scout engine exists on Packagist. It does, and it is the default choice — vendor-maintained, tracks Typesense releases, and is what the docs point to. This package is only interesting if it does something the official engine does not (specific relevance tuning, older Laravel support, custom index settings).
  • Your corpus and query volume are small. Scout's built-in database driver or Postgres full-text search will carry you a long way for free. Adopting a search cluster is an operational commitment; do not take it on for 5k documents.
  • You need an SLA or security review sign-off. Zero stars, zero dependents, no visible release cadence, and a score of 0 are all supply-chain and bus-factor red flags. You cannot put that in a vendor risk register and expect it to pass.
  • You are on Meilisearch or Algolia and happy. Switching engines is a migration with relevance-regression risk; the driver is the easy part. Do not let a cheap swap mask an expensive reindex-and-retune project.

PM recommendation: fund a timeboxed spike (1–2 weeks) comparing this package against the Typesense-maintained engine on your actual data. Default the roadmap to the official engine; keep this package as a documented fallback only if the spike surfaces a gap it closes.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: "Search is currently a pay-per-query SaaS line item that grows with our success. Laravel already abstracts the search engine behind Scout, so we can evaluate a self-hosted alternative without rewriting product code. The evaluation is a two-week spike, not a migration commitment; the output is a cost curve and a go/no-go."

To engineering: "Scout driver swap — index configuration lives in code, Eloquent stays the source of truth, and the model-level search API is unchanged, so feature work is not blocked. The caveat is maintenance: the package we're evaluating has effectively no adoption, so plan on the Typesense-maintained engine as the primary and treat this one as reference material. Budget for reindex time and a relevance-regression pass on top queries; the driver is the cheap 20%."

To security/legal: "Self-hostable, keeps index data inside our boundary, and removes a data-processor from the vendor list — contingent on us running the cluster."

The one-line positioning: this package is not a product decision, it is a cheap option on a product decision — and the option is only worth exercising if the official engine disappoints.
