Phone Number Laravel Package

devloops/phone-number

A Laravel package for validating, formatting, and normalizing international phone numbers. Parse numbers by country, convert to E.164, and integrate cleanly with Laravel validation rules for reliable phone input handling.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

devloops/phone-number is a Laravel Nova field package, not a general-purpose phone library. Its value surface is narrow and well-defined: it renders a phone input inside a Nova resource form, handles client-side formatting/country selection, and (depending on implementation) contributes server-side validation. Architecturally it is a thin presentation layer over an underlying phone-number parser (typically libphonenumber metadata in JS and/or giggsey/libphonenumber-for-php on the server).

Implications:

  • Only relevant if Nova is already in the stack. Nova is a paid, first-party-adjacent product. If the organization uses Nova, the field slots into the existing fields() convention with no architectural change. If it does not, this package has zero applicability and should be dropped from evaluation immediately.
  • Correct layer for the concern. Phone formatting/validation belongs in a form field + validation rule, not in domain models. This package respects that boundary, which keeps it low-coupling.
  • Not a data-model decision. The critical architectural question is what gets stored (E.164 vs. raw display string vs. country + national number). That decision outlives the package and must be made by the team, not inherited from a field's defaults.

Integration feasibility

Low friction on the happy path:

  1. composer require devloops/phone-number
  2. Nova package discovery registers the service provider; published assets (if any) via nova:publish
  3. Add PhoneNumber::make('Phone') to the target Nova resource
  4. Optionally attach the package's validation rule and a normalizer on the model

Two naming inconsistencies warrant verification before commit: the composer package (devloops/phone-number) differs from the repository name (nova-phone-number-field), and the dependents: 0 figure means no public downstream signal that the published artifact matches the repo. Confirm the Packagist entry, its release history, and that the tagged version corresponds to the repository HEAD.

Technical risk

  • Nova major-version coupling (highest risk). Nova field packages break across Nova majors (asset pipeline, Vue 2 → Vue 3, field API changes). With 8 stars and a single maintainer, there is no guarantee a Nova 5+ compatible release arrives on the organization's upgrade timeline. Treat Nova upgrades as blocked-on-package-review.
  • Abandonment risk. Single maintainer, minimal adoption, no dependents. This is a "convenience field," not load-bearing infrastructure — which caps blast radius but also caps the maintainer's incentive.
  • Validation gap. If the field formats client-side without a matching server-side rule, invalid numbers reach the database. Verification required.
  • Metadata staleness. Phone numbering plans change. If the package ships static metadata, newly allocated ranges may be rejected or mis-formatted until a release lands.
  • Storage ambiguity. Default storage format must be confirmed; silent E.164 vs. raw divergence across resources creates a data-quality problem that surfaces later in SMS/telephony integrations.

Key questions

  1. Are we a Nova shop, and on which Nova major version? Is Nova 5 supported by the current release?
  2. Does the package ship a server-side validation rule, or only client-side formatting?
  3. What format is persisted by default, and is it configurable? Can we force E.164?
  4. Which underlying parser is used, and how is its metadata updated?
  5. Does the field work in index/detail views, filters, and relatable / dependent-field scenarios?
  6. Is the maintainer responsive on issues, and what is the release cadence over the last 12 months?
  7. PHP/Laravel support matrix — does it cover our current and next LTS targets?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

Requires Laravel + Nova, PHP version consistent with the package's composer.json, and Node only if rebuilding assets (typically prebuilt). Fit is binary: Nova present → clean drop-in; Nova absent → discard.

Migration path

Existing phone columns are almost certainly free-text. The package will not retroactively clean them.

  1. Audit existing phone columns: row counts, non-null counts, distinct formats, known-bad rows.
  2. Normalize offline using giggsey/libphonenumber-for-php in a queued backfill job — parse with a default region, coerce to E.164, and quarantine unparseable values into a review table rather than discarding.
  3. Introduce the field on a single low-traffic resource, writing to the normalized column.
  4. Enforce the validation rule at the FormRequest/Nova-rule layer so the field is not the only gate.
  5. Expand resource by resource; keep the raw original column until the backfill is signed off.

Compatibility

  • Pin the package version in composer.json; do not float.
  • Verify Nova major version and Vue runtime compatibility explicitly — this is the most likely break point.
  • Confirm the package's PHP constraint against the platform's supported PHP versions before committing.
  • Check whether the package overrides or conflicts with any existing phone validation rules in the codebase.

Sequencing

Phase 0 (0.5 day): spike on one resource in a staging environment; prove rendering, persistence format, and validation behavior. Phase 1 (1–2 days): backfill script + review queue for unparseable numbers. Phase 2 (1 day): roll out to remaining resources, add server-side rule, add a DB constraint or cast for consistency. Phase 3 (ongoing): monitor metadata freshness; watch upstream for Nova compatibility releases.

Total realistic effort for a mature team: 3–5 engineering days, dominated by backfill and validation hardening, not by the package itself.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Low code footprint, high dependency risk. The package is small enough to fork and vendor internally if abandoned — budget ~1 day for a fork-and-own contingency, and note that a maintained in-house Nova field is a reasonable fallback given the tiny surface area.
  • Track upstream releases against Nova upgrade windows. Add the package to the "review before Nova upgrade" checklist.
  • If the underlying parser is swapped or its metadata updated, re-run the validation fixtures.

Support

  • Community-only: GitHub issues, no SLA, single maintainer. Internal escalation path must be "fork it," not "wait for a fix."
  • Document the chosen storage format and validation rule in the team's data dictionary so the behavior is understood without reading package source.

Scaling

  • Runtime cost is negligible: client-side formatting plus one parse per write. No impact on request throughput or DB load at any realistic scale.
  • Read-path concern is separate: normalized E.164 storage enables indexed exact-match lookups; it does not enable efficient partial/suffix search. If "find by last 4 digits" is a requirement, that needs a separate derived column and index — the field package does not address it.
  • Bulk import paths bypass Nova entirely; validation must be enforced at the model/request layer or imports will reintroduce dirty data.

Failure modes

Failure Symptom Mitigation
Nova upgrade breaks field Form blank or JS error on resource pages Pin version; smoke-test field on every Nova upgrade
Missing server-side rule Invalid numbers persist silently Enforce validation independently of the field
Stale numbering metadata Valid new numbers rejected Monitor; upgrade or patch metadata quarterly
Inconsistent storage formats Downstream SMS/telephony failures Enforce E.164 via cast/normalizer, not convention
Maintainer abandons package No fixes for new Nova/PHP Fork and vendor; small enough to own
Packagist/repo mismatch Unexpected code in dependency Verify tag ↔ repo HEAD before pinning; prefer commit-hash constraint

Ramp-up

  • Developer onboarding: near-zero. Anyone who has written a Nova field understands this in minutes.
  • Product/QA onboarding: moderate. Testers must know the expected storage format and which country defaults apply, or they will file false defects on formatting behavior.
  • Primary organizational cost is decision overhead — agreeing on E.164, default region, and validation strictness — not learning the package.

Recommendation

Adopt conditionally, gated on Nova version support and a shipped server-side validation rule. The package itself is a convenience; the durable work is the storage-format decision, the backfill, and the validation rule. Ship those regardless of whether this specific package survives, and keep the fork contingency ready given the single-maintainer, 8-star, zero-dependent profile.
