deepskylog/laravel-astronomy-library
A Laravel astronomy library providing reusable helpers and domain logic for DeepskyLog, including celestial coordinates, observing utilities, and data structures for amateur astronomy applications.
This release establishes the baseline assessment for the package (no prior evaluation existed). v6.8.6 is a patch-level bug fix to Magnitude::nelmToSqm(), correcting a NAN return when NELM plus observer offset exceeds 7.93 — the point at which the logarithm argument goes negative. The method now saturates at 22, matching the SQM ceiling already reached around NELM 6.6.
Architecture fit: The fix touches a single value-object/calculation class, which suggests a framework-agnostic computation core that is likely bound into Laravel via a service provider or facade. That is a low-coupling shape: no migrations, no queue or event surface, no persistence implied. It slots into a Laravel service layer cleanly as an injected dependency.
Integration feasibility: High. A composer update to ^6.8.6 is the entire mechanical effort. The substantive work is auditing call sites, not wiring.
Technical risk: Low-to-moderate. The patch is semver-compliant in intent, but it is an observable output change: any consumer that detected invalid input via is_nan() on the return value will silently stop detecting it, because 22 is a plausible-looking number. The hardcoded 22 is also a magic constant — it should be confirmed as a documented physical/spec limit rather than an arbitrary clamp. Sibling conversion methods (notably the inverse SQM→NELM path) may carry the same domain-edge defect and were not addressed in these notes.
Key questions:
Magnitude methods share the same logarithm domain issue?Stack fit: Pure PHP numeric computation, so it is compatible with any Laravel version whose PHP constraint the package declares. Nothing in the change touches HTTP, Eloquent, queues, or caching, so there is no framework-surface risk.
Migration path: Pin ^6.8.6 and run the existing suite. Because the previous behavior returned NAN, any existing test asserting is_nan() for high-NELM inputs will now fail — that is expected and should be rewritten to assert the saturation value (22) explicitly, encoding the new contract.
Compatibility: Backward compatible at the API level (same signature, same return type), behaviorally changed at the domain edge. Treat it as a semantics change for anyone who used NAN as an input-validation signal. No deprecations or removals in this release.
Sequencing:
nelmToSqm() and any downstream is_nan/is_finite guards on its result.22 constant and on sibling-method edge cases before relying on saturation semantics.Maintenance: Negligible ongoing cost. Single-maintainer-style patch releases with narrow, well-described scope are a healthy signal; the package appears actively maintained. Track releases but no dedicated ownership needed beyond a version pin.
Support: Low. The failure mode is confined to a computation; no runtime infrastructure is involved. The main support burden is documentation: internal consumers must know that 22 means "saturated / out of realistic range," not "measured."
Scaling: No impact. Pure arithmetic, no I/O, no state. Not a scaling consideration at any realistic request volume.
Failure modes:
NAN propagated into responses and charts, producing corrupt JSON (NaN is invalid JSON) or silent display artifacts — arguably the worse failure, which is why this fix matters.Ramp-up: Very low. One method, one constant, documented behavior. A new engineer can absorb the relevant surface in under an hour; the only non-obvious detail is the saturation contract, which should be captured in a short internal note alongside the version bump.
