Phpwhois Laravel Package

david-garcia/phpwhois

PHP WHOIS lookup library for querying domain registration data across TLDs. Parse registrar, creation and expiry dates, nameservers, and status directly from WHOIS servers using a simple PHP API.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature feasibility for domain-adjacent capabilities. This library answers a narrow but real question — "can we get registration data (registrar, creation/expiry dates, nameservers, status codes) for a domain, in PHP, without a vendor contract?" — which is enough to scope and price features like domain expiry monitoring, portfolio dashboards, marketplace listing enrichment, brand/typosquat watchlists, and signup-time domain validation.
  • Build vs. buy on the parsing layer, not the lookup layer. The genuinely hard part of WHOIS is not the socket query; it is the per-TLD response format fragmentation across hundreds of registries. This package represents the "build" option (community-maintained parsers). The decision it informs is whether your team wants to own a parser treadmill or pay an API vendor to absorb it.
  • Roadmap sequencing: WHOIS vs. RDAP. ICANN-mandated RDAP is the structured-JSON successor to WHOIS for gTLDs, and WHOIS output quality is in managed decline. Any roadmap item that depends on WHOIS parsing should be explicitly flagged as a bridge, with RDAP as the target architecture. This package's existence should not be read as "the problem is solved."
  • Data-quality and compliance scoping. Post-GDPR redaction means registrant name/email/phone fields are frequently withheld for gTLDs. If a proposed feature depends on who owns a domain (KYC, fraud scoring, lead enrichment), this package will surface "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY" — a reason to descope the feature, not to blame the library.
  • Licensing gate. GPL-2.0 is copyleft. For an internal tool this is a non-issue; for a distributed or SaaS-adjacent product with any code-sharing, it is a legal review item that can kill adoption on its own. This is a decision the PM must surface before engineering investment, not after.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The consuming codebase is already GPL-2.0 (or GPL-compatible), or the use is strictly internal/self-hosted and never distributed — the license risk collapses to near zero.
  • The need is a prototype or demand-validation spike: you want to prove a domain-expiry-alert or portfolio-enrichment feature has user pull before signing a WHOIS API contract.
  • Volume is low and latency/failure tolerance is high — an admin dashboard refreshed nightly, a batch audit script, a one-off due-diligence dump — where a failed lookup is a retry, not an incident.
  • You are willing to wrap it behind a DomainLookupInterface from day one so the implementation can be swapped for RDAP or a commercial API without touching product code.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need uptime, rate-limit management, retry/backoff, and per-TLD accuracy guarantees. A single-maintainer package with 1 star, 0 dependents, and a last release of 2021-06-25 offers no support contract and no meaningful community backstop. That is a vendor-risk profile, and it should be treated as one even though the "vendor" is free.
  • Your product is a SaaS or otherwise distributes PHP code — GPL-2.0 obligations need counsel, and the answer is often "use a permissive alternative."
  • You need structured, reliable, forward-compatible data: prefer RDAP (free, JSON, IANA-bootstrapped) as the primary path and a commercial WHOIS API (WhoisXML API, DomainTools, IP2WHOIS) for ccTLD coverage and historical records.
  • You need historical WHOIS (who owned this domain last year), reverse WHOIS (what else does this registrant own), or bulk lookups. This package does live single queries; those are data-warehouse problems, not parser problems.
  • The feature is revenue-critical or customer-facing with an SLA. Reliability requirements alone disqualify it.

Also note the low signal score here (opportunity 28.38, score 0.005): this is not a package the ecosystem is converging on. Treat adoption as a deliberate, contained bet — not a default.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a free, open-source PHP library that fetches and parses domain registration records. It lets us validate a domain-related feature cheaply before committing to a vendor contract — worth roughly a spike, not a platform bet. Two caveats to flag now: it is GPL-2.0 licensed, which is fine for internal use but needs legal sign-off if we ever ship the code; and it is effectively unmaintained (one maintainer, minimal adoption, last release mid-2021), so we would be accepting the maintenance burden ourselves. Recommendation: use it behind an abstraction layer as a time-boxed proof of concept, budget for either an RDAP implementation or a paid API as the production path, and do not let any roadmap commitment depend on it long-term.

To engineering: Free head start on WHOIS querying and per-TLD response parsing — the tedious part. Wrap it in a single adapter interface on day one; assume we replace it. Assume registrant fields are redacted, assume some TLDs will fail, add timeouts and caching, and do not put it on a request-critical path. Plan RDAP as the strategic replacement.
