Enum Helper Laravel Package

datomatic/enum-helper

Laravel helper for PHP enums that adds labels, descriptions, colors, icons, select options, validation rules, and Eloquent casts. Expose enum values and names to build forms, APIs, and admin UIs with less boilerplate.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit. v2.2.0 is a single additive feature — "comparable enums" — landing as a minor semver bump. For a modern Laravel codebase (PHP 8.1+), enums are already first-class: Eloquent casts enum attributes, validation rules accept Rule::enum(), and framework internals have moved toward enum-backed configuration. A comparability helper therefore sits in a well-trodden seam rather than fighting the framework. The likely value is ergonomic: replacing ad-hoc $a === $b / $a->value === $b->value checks and scattered match arms with a consistent equality/ordering contract, which is attractive in domain code (status transitions, workflow states, pricing tiers) where comparisons are frequent and easy to get subtly wrong.

Integration feasibility. High. This is a leaf-level utility with no evident coupling to container bindings, service providers, migrations, or config publishing. Expected cost is a composer require plus adoption inside existing enum definitions. The main unknown is how comparability is exposed — a trait on each enum, a global helper, or a wrapper contract — since that determines whether adoption is opt-in per enum or ambient across the codebase.

Technical risk. Low for the change itself, moderate for the package as a dependency. The release introduces no breaking changes, deprecations, or migration steps. Residual risk concentrates in three places: (1) semantic ambiguity between pure and backed enums, where "comparable" could mean identity, backing-value equality, or ordering, and where loose comparison (==) versus strict (===) changes behavior in ways that will not surface until runtime; (2) cross-enum comparison, where two different enum classes sharing a backing value may or may not be considered equal; (3) dependency health — the release note credits a single external contributor, which is a weak but real signal about maintainer bandwidth. Note also that the release notes are a one-line changelog with no linked PR description, documentation diff, or test evidence; that is a documentation-quality risk for a package whose entire value proposition is subtle comparison semantics.

Key questions. What is the exact comparison contract — identity, value, or ordering — and is it documented per enum kind? Does comparing across distinct enum classes throw, return false, or coerce? Is the helper available as a trait, an interface, or a global, and does it carry any static-analysis (PHPStan/Psalm) support? Are there tests covering pure enums, backed enums, and unsupported operands? What is the minimum PHP and Laravel version, and is the maintainer responsive to issues?

Integration Approach

Stack fit. Best suited to Laravel 10/11 on PHP 8.1+ with an existing enum-heavy domain layer. It is a poor fit for legacy codebases still on PHP 7.x or on Laravel versions predating native enum casts, where it would be a solution without a problem. Projects that already standardize on a house trait or a competing enum package should treat this as a consolidation decision, not an additive one.

Migration path. Effectively a no-op migration: adopt incrementally, enum by enum, with no database or configuration changes anticipated. Recommended path is to pilot on one or two high-traffic enums (e.g. order status, user state), verify behavior against existing comparison sites, then widen. Because the change is additive, rollback is a simple revert of the trait application and the dependency.

Compatibility. Verify the package's PHP/Laravel constraint matrix against the application's lockfile before adoption — a minor release can still tighten composer.json requirements. Confirm behavior under the project's static analysis baseline, since enum comparison helpers frequently trigger false positives that will fail CI. Confirm no collision with existing global helpers or traits of the same name.

Sequencing. (1) Validate constraints and install in a branch; (2) write a short internal comparison-convention note codifying when to use the helper versus native operators; (3) pilot on one enum and run the full test suite; (4) expand to remaining enums opportunistically during feature work rather than as a dedicated refactor; (5) pin the version and add it to the dependency-review queue.

Operational Impact

Maintenance. Low ongoing effort — the package is small and the feature set is narrow, so upgrade churn should be minimal. The offsetting concern is concentration risk: a single-maintainer package with a one-line changelog offers limited assurances about long-term stewardship. Given the low integration surface, the pragmatic mitigation is to treat it as an easily replaceable convenience layer and avoid letting it become load-bearing in critical domain logic.

Support. Expect to be self-reliant for questions. The release note provides no narrative context, so the team should budget a half-day to read the source and tests directly rather than waiting on upstream documentation. Internal documentation of the comparison semantics is the real support artifact here.

Scaling. Performance impact is negligible at any realistic scale; enum comparison is a constant-time operation and the helper adds at most a function call. The scaling consideration is organizational, not computational: the convention must be communicated once and then enforced in review, or the codebase will drift into a mix of helper-based and native comparisons.

Failure modes. The realistic failure is silent semantic divergence — a comparison that returns the "wrong" true/false because a developer assumed identity semantics where value semantics were implemented (or vice versa), especially at boundaries where enums are hydrated from request input or database values. Secondary failures: static analysis breakage in CI, trait name collisions on existing enums, and version-constraint conflicts during the next Laravel upgrade.

Ramp-up. Trivial for any developer comfortable with PHP 8.1 enums; the concept is familiar and the API surface is small. Budget a short team briefing on the comparison contract rather than formal training. The main onboarding cost is the one-time reading of the source to establish what "comparable" actually guarantees — a cost that would be near zero had the release included a documented contract.
