Tv Maze Php Api Laravel Package

dariusiii/tv-maze-php-api

dariusiii/tv-maze-php-api is a lightweight PHP client for TVmaze, providing easy access to TV show schedules, episode guides, cast and crew details, and search endpoints. Designed for Laravel and plain PHP projects, it wraps API requests in a simple, readable interface.

Product Decisions This Supports

Feature-level decisions

  • TV discovery and tracking features: show pages, episode guides, air-date calendars ("what's on tonight"), cast/crew credits, and image galleries for a media, streaming, or fan-engagement surface — all sourced from a single free metadata provider instead of a bespoke content database.
  • Watchlist and notification features: TVMaze's schedule endpoints make "new episode of a show you follow airs Thursday" cheap to build; the wrapper is the integration seam, not the product logic.
  • Search and browse UX: fuzzy show search and genre/network filters let you validate a catalog-browsing experience without ingesting and normalizing your own data.
  • Editorial/CMS enrichment: auto-populate show metadata into internal tooling or marketing pages, removing manual copy-paste for content ops.

Roadmap decisions

  • MVP sequencing: this collapses a "content metadata" epic from weeks of schema design, ingestion, and refresh jobs into a thin client plus a cache. That frees the roadmap to spend its budget on differentiation (recommendations, social, UX) rather than plumbing.
  • Prototype vs. platform bet: treat this as a validation dependency for a 4–8 week experiment. It is not a platform commitment until data-licensing and reliability questions are answered.
  • Build vs. buy: a free, MIT-licensed wrapper plus a free public API beats (a) building a TV metadata store and (b) a paid contract with Gracenote/TiVo/TVDB for anything pre-revenue. Revisit only when you need commercial SLAs or streaming-availability deep links (JustWatch, Watchmode) that TVMaze does not provide.

What it should not decide

  • Adoption numbers (0 stars, 0 dependents) are not evidence of quality either way; the surface area is small enough to audit directly. The real decision inputs are the upstream API's terms (rate limits, attribution, share-alike on data) and whether you can abstract the client behind your own interface.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You need TV-specific metadata — shows, episodes, air dates, cast, networks, images — and nothing more. TVMaze is strongest exactly here.
  • You are pre-revenue or building an internal tool, side project, or POC where zero licensing cost matters more than an SLA.
  • You are on PHP/Laravel and want a drop-in client rather than hand-rolling HTTP calls against a documented REST API.
  • You can tolerate unproven maintenance: single maintainer, no dependents. The mitigation is standard and cheap — pin the version, vendor or fork the code, and wrap it behind your own ShowMetadataProvider interface so a swap costs days, not a rewrite.
  • You can satisfy attribution and share-alike obligations. TVMaze data is community-sourced and CC BY-SA licensed; that is a product and legal decision, not an engineering one. Surface visible attribution and get counsel's read before shipping commercially.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need streaming availability / "where to watch" with deep links — use Watchmode or JustWatch; TVMaze won't carry it.
  • You need movies or music alongside TV — TMDB covers both and has a more mature commercial posture.
  • You need a contractual SLA, uptime guarantee, or support channel. A free community API is rate-limited (roughly 20 requests per 10 seconds per IP) and offers no commitments. Production traffic needs caching, backoff, and a degradation story regardless of wrapper quality.
  • You need enterprise-grade or legally indemnified metadata — Gracenote/TiVo. That is a budget conversation, not a package choice.
  • You require an actively maintained, widely adopted dependency under a formal OSS review policy. Zero stars and zero dependents will fail most supply-chain checklists on paper; document the exception and your fork strategy if you proceed.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (30 seconds) "We can ship a TV discovery and episode-tracking experience in one sprint instead of one quarter. This is a small open-source connector to TVMaze, a free public TV metadata service — no license fee, no vendor contract, no data team. The trade-off is that it's a free community API with no uptime guarantee and a share-alike data license, so I'm recommending a time-boxed pilot behind our own abstraction layer: we get the feature cheap, we keep the option to switch to a paid provider if it becomes core to revenue. Cost is engineering days, not dollars."

For engineering

  • It's a thin, MIT-licensed client — small enough to read end-to-end in under an hour before we depend on it. Pin the version and consider vendoring.
  • Do not call it directly from feature code. Wrap it in an internal ShowMetadata interface, add a cache (show/episode records are near-static; schedules are daily), and handle 429s with backoff and a stale-cache fallback.
  • Assume the maintainer disappears tomorrow. The fork path must stay trivial; if we find ourselves patching around missing endpoints, that's the signal to own the client.
  • Flag the CC BY-SA obligation early — it affects how we store and redistribute derived data, and it's cheaper to design for it now than to retrofit attribution later.
